“He died when he was alive.” ‘Alive’ because he was

travelling, exploring, learning, taking risks, chasing

dreams…forever. Paulo Coelho’s ‘The Alchemist’ is a

legendary book, a way to be and an illustration

of this very philosophy of life.

Alchemist (n.) A practitioner of alchemy. Alchemy (n.) An imaginary art which aimed to transmute the baser metals into gold, to find the panacea, or universal remedy for diseases…(n.) A mixed metal composed mainly of brass, formerly used for various utensils (n.) Miraculous power of transmuting At Xavier Institute of

Management Bhubaneswar’s (XIMB) PGDBM program, ‘The Alchemist’ comes alive every day. In fact, this has been the very essence of the XIMB inspiration. The students make a journey. Then the journey makes them. It initiates and begins to flower at XIMB.

(6)

A few days back, I was thinking about the 100% placement that XIMB achieved in 2009. I found three primary reasons for this success. The students at XIMB have a strong fundamental understanding of business and its applications not only in theory but in practice. Secondly, they are industry-ready professionals with enormous potential for creativity and innovation. Thirdly, they are “humane managers”, people who manage with a heart for the society and uphold values and ethics which inspires our society to scale greater heights of excellence and prosperity. In the past one year I have had the opportunity to interact with a few recruiters. I found a common feedback, “XIMB students inspire teamwork, excel in performance, are target oriented and have strong ethical standards.” As the Director of this institute, it gives me immense pleasure to know that the talent which graduates from XIMB is not greed driven but value driven. It adds tremendous vitality to the organizations and ensures that this world becomes a better place to live in.

It is with great pleasure I welcome you to Xuberance 2010. I am sure that the bright young students at XIMB would deeply impress you with their vision for tomorrow, their talent for today and their ethics forever.

Fr. P T Joseph, SJ Director, XIMB

(7)

Our students thrive on the ambition to excel and succeed. They have an ability to lead by example supported by an integrated outlook, which you would fi nd a tremendous asset.

I cordially welcome you to experience Xuberance 2010, to discover committed and compassionate leaders of tomorrow.

Prof. W S William Dean (Academics)

The world in its current economic scenario is constantly forcing organizations to focus on effi ciency. While ‘recession’ is becoming the buzzword, a plethora of opportunities is rising for the young minds all over the world and especially in India.

With excellent faculty, quality infrastructure and technology, XIMB always strives to produce the best talent to the country. The students here are trained not only in academics but are also groomed into becoming socially responsible managers. The learning environment transforms the students into prolifi c leaders who can drive the growth of organizations.

The fl agship programme of XIMB, the two year Post Graduate Diploma in Management has a curriculum designed in helping students adapt to changing business conditions. The programme imbibes in students the values of hard work, teamwork, ethical and social responsibility and prepares them for careers in corporate sector and public systems.

THE INSTITUTE

In 1987, in the temple city of Bhubaneswar, the Orissa Jesuit Society entered into a social contract with the Government of Orissa to set up Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar (XIMB). Inspired by the Jesuits spirit of ‘Magis’, XIMB strives to be a premier institute globally recognized for management education, training, research, and consulting that help build a just and humane society.

22 years since its establishment, the Institute today is widely recognised for its excellence and is counted among the leading management institutions in the country. It offers an enriching array of programmes – the fl agship programme - the Postgraduate Diploma in Management (PGDM), the Postgraduate Diploma in Rural Management (PGDRM), the Part-Time Programme for Working Executives (PGDM-PT), Management Development

Programmes, Postgraduate Certifi cate Programme in Business Management (PGCBM), and the doctoral level Fellow Programme Management (FPM).

The institute holds integrity, honesty and respect for individuals to be of paramount importance and it continues to develop competent and committed leaders through dissemination of quality management education. In the wake of evolving India, XIMB has endeavoured to broaden its global outlook and has greatly enhanced its presence in the international arena through initiatives such as hosting international business conferences and student exchange programmes. The institute has also been awarded the South Asian Quality Assurance System (SAQS) Accreditation by the Association of Management Development Institutions in South Asia (AMDISA).

(9)

“And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping

you to achieve it.”

Luck is not found. Luck is made. One can only be amazed, when one’s effort is empowered by the unknown.

XIMB is modelled to support the nuances of its students and their careers. Founded on this deep understanding; it subtly complements and empowers it.

(10)

DEVELOPING LEADERSHIP

WITH A HUMAN FACE

“There is only one way to learn,” the alchemist answered. “It’s through action. Everything

you need to know you have learned through your journey.”

Learning is more than knowing. XIMB graduates as a part of their program, partner the upliftment -processes of society’s weaker sections. For an XIMB graduate, it’s never just about markets; it’s about the people who make the market, establishing a much deeper grasp over it.

This is inculcated from the very beginning of the course. During the 2nd term, students are exposed to a very unique course, Organizational Behaviour-II which consists of executing a socially relevant project.

Working in groups, students choose a social problem and workout the milestones towards providing a unique, sustainable solution for it. The initiative serves a dual purpose of teaching the students the importance of teamwork and exposing them to a different life thus providing a humane edge to the leaders

At XIMB, the philosophy has always been learning through doing.

The projects undertaken by the group bear a testament to the diversity of the student community at XIMB.

Providing better healthcare facilities at fl ood ravaged Betenda village

An innovative healthcare model was envisaged and implemented to address the lack of medical facilities in rural Orissa. The model consisted of alliances with urban doctors of various specialities, planning their regular visits to the village and issues of free health services cards to each villagers to access these services.

Students sponsored the construction of a school building in a slum near XIMB through personal efforts and channeling of corporate funds. The project also helped in providing vocational training and employment support to Class XIIth passouts through a tie up with Satyam Computers.

Making the visually impaired independent

In association with the Orissa Association for the Blind, the project aided the visually impaired in completion of doctorate level studies, by converting the course material into audio format. The same was also done for Govt. rules pertaining to the handicapped. Around 2500 minutes of material was converted into audio format.

Bridging the social gap for the inmates of Biju Patnaik open air Jail

This project was aimed at analyzing and understanding whether punishment led to actual reformation of the inmates with 10+ years of prison service. By extensive interaction the students were able to give the inmates a view of the outside world thereby reducing any apprehensions that the inmates had about their acceptance back into society

The successful completion of all these socially relevant projects re-emphasizes XIM students’ Motto : “ Be the Change you want to see in the World”

INFRASTRUCTURE

CAMPUS

The 20 acres of luch green campus in Bhubaneswar is ensconced in serenity and rife with natural beauty

with the ultra-modern facilities at campus providing idyllic avenues for the country’s intellectual capital

to learn, apply and grow. XIMB campus has been conferred with the Best Institutional Garden award for

the last 10 years at the Annual Regional Flower Show organized by Plant Lovers Association.

the last 10 years at the Annual Regional Flower Show organized by Plant Lovers Association.

A journey must find the right vehicle and support. Even the minutest tools can make a defining difference.

Infrastructure at XIMB is a well rounded invisible support with a very visible impact.

“But all this happened for one basic reason: no matter how many detours and adjustments it made, the caravan moved toward the same point.”

(13)

CLASS ROOMS

The Institute has state-of-the-art class room facilities. The infrastructure facility has been enhanced this year with the construction of a new academic block. These include 6 large class rooms (capacity 120), 14 lecture halls (capacity 60), 8 syndicate rooms (capacity 30 each), a multimedia hall, training halls, etc. Besides these facilities, the new academic block also has a board room, a conference room and a new examination hall. All the class rooms are air conditioned and well equipped with Audio Video Systems, Overhead projectors, Computers and Wireless Hotspots. The Management Development Centre (MDC) has 4 training rooms with all the training

aids. It is supported by 34 twin seated air-conditioned rooms with round-the-clock internet connectivity. The Institute also has a hi-tech air-conditioned auditorium, which has a seating capacity of approximately 850 people.

RESIDENCE

With classes round-the-clock and a system of evaluation based on extensive group assignments and projects, the students are required to stay on campus. There are separate residences for men and women. All the rooms are Wi-Fi enabled and the hostels have washing machines, laser printing facility, Xerox facility and cafeteria providing food round the clock

SPORTS AND FITNESS

FACILITIES

XIMB boasts of excellent sports facilities. There are two fl ood lit tennis courts and a basket ball court, an indoor badminton court, a volleyball court, a jogging track and facilities for indoor sports, which are availed of and enjoyed by students and faculty. For the fi tness freaks, the institute also houses a state of the art 24/7 multi-purpose gymnasium.

(14)

The XIMBians nurture this to the core. They take each new day as a new learning experience, a never ending process of knowledge acquisition. Each and every student is like a pearl woven together in a string named Xavier Institute of Management. Each pearl is chosen with utmost care through a rigorous selection process. Out of thousands of applicants, less than 1% are selected to be XIMBians. This ensures that only the extremely competitive and critical thinkers join this esteemed institute.

The XIMB student community refl ects unity in diversity. The campus has students coming from all over the country and through exchange programs, from various other countries as well. XIMB makes a conscious attempt to bring together an excellent mix of students based on academic background and work experience. Students from various social backgrounds, ranging from the metropolitan to the small town, add to this diversity. This gives us XIMBians a degree of adaptability and cultural sensitivity that is second to none. And the diversity of creativity and talent living in the form of our friends only gives us that extra edge or that gut feeling somewhere deep inside to dare do the different.

XIMBians

“But I have promises to keep,

miles to go before I sleep.”

“The meaning of life is so simple it can be written on an emerald.”

‘Dreams make a destiny.’ That is the simple purpose of life and the accolade of the successful. XIMB alumni are illustrations of living-dreams and the visions of leading corporate houses. It showcases how the empowered can empower the world.

XIMB’s alumni community is a testimonial to the fact that the institute has played a key role

in preparing future managers to be pioneers, innovators and entrepreneurs with a global

vision, ready to take on many challenges of the corporate world.

PEDAGOGY

Apart from regular class-room lectures and case studies, the teaching process is supplemented with seminars, role-plays and group exercises. We also have guest lectures by industry experts in our regular courses to augment the learning process and lend a different perspective. Another unique feature is the immersion courses offered which cater to specifi c needs of the industry.

Live Projects form an indispensable part of the pedagogy, with the emphasis on implementation of the concepts in the real world business scenario. Apart from projects done as part of a course, students take up independent research projects under the guidance of a professor in the area of their interest.

State-of-the-art IT infrastructure, and access to a plethora of databases available on the intranet, complement the wholesome learning experience of the students. Running parallel to the academic curriculum is a foundational course on Emotional Quotient & Leadership which dwells upon developing authentic humanistic leadership style, where people feel meaningfully connected to the leader, and thus will offer support even under the most stressful conditions. The course creates an understanding of emotional intelligence competencies among the students, allowing them to make a signifi cant impact on their business and personal lives.

“Intuition is really a sudden immersion of the soul into the universal current of life.”

If intuition empowers the road-map, what empowers ‘intuition’? Condensed realities as well as possibilities across the world…Intuition is a powerhouse of wisdom. But it’s usually dormant, till one awakens it.

Pedagogy at XIMB is oriented to a student’s ‘sense’ of being and discovery and not to sheer knowledge. At XIMB PGDM, education must evolve to be an instinct.

XIMB has long championed the cause of management education with an international outlook. Over the years, the Institute has consciously worked towards creating a unique learning experience so as to expose its student community to the diversity in culture and add to the peer learning experience. This multi-cultural learning environment helps create open-minded, culturally-sensitive managers who could feel at home anywhere in the world.

Final Placements

PRE PLACEMENT TALK (PPTS)

Over the years PPTs have been a standard practice to facilitate the company student interaction. PPTs give the corporate an opportunity to present their organization and an opportunity for the student community to learn about the prospects that lie ahead. Standard audio visual facilities, LCD projector, overhead projector (OHP) and TV/VCR and any other special equipment can be made available on campus on request. The campus also has Video Conferencing Facilities. Dates for the PPTs can be obtained from the Placement Office. Distribution of brochures, annual reports, product samples and souvenirs are some of the methods used by companies to enhance brand awareness among the students.

CURRICULUM VITAE

The Institute has a standard format which the students use for applying to various companies. A company can request the CVs in the Institute’s format or any other specific format, in hard or soft copies as desired.

LATERAL AND FRESHER RECRUITMENT

Both the Lateral and Fresher Recruitment Processes would run simultaneously during the Placement Week. The students rank the companies based on their prior knowledge and the information gained through PPTs. Based on these rankings, the participating

companies are allotted day and time slots during which they can commence the recruitment process.

PRE PLACEMENT OFFERS (PPOS)

Of late more and more companies are offering PPOs to summer interns. An exposure of 8 weeks gives both the organization and the student an opportunity to gauge each other’s compatibility. Companies could, therefore, consider PPOs and communicate this decision to the Institute before the Placement Week commences. In the event that the company does not have any internal rules governing this process, the students’ decision however, will be communicated to the company either after the Placement Week is over or at its assigned time slot during the Placement Week.

JOB OFFERS

A job offer will be considered as valid only if the Placement Office is in receipt of the written communication of the same. Verbal or telephonic offers do not qualify as job offers. Final job offers will be announced to the students only at the allotted day/time slots. Delays in announcing the offers may result in selected candidates being placed in other companies. Appointment letters of the selected students must be sent (in duplicate) to the Placement Office within 20 days of the job offers made on campus. Acceptance signed by the concerned student shall be informed to the companies.
