Q 1. Read the passage carefully and answer the following questions. [20]

It was the night before Christmas, Christmas Eve. Snow lay on the ground. The houses and gardens looked bright. There were colourful lights and lanterns hanging in the doorway. Carol singers passed by, singing sweetly.

Mr. and Mrs. Webster were standing in their doorway. They were welcoming guests to their party. How happy they were!

Inside the house, the guests chatted excitedly. They ate the food that Mrs. Webster cooked. Everything looked lovely. Music filled the house. The children gathered by the Christmas tree to look at the presents under it. Each child felt the package and tried to guess what was inside. Tomorrow they would open their presents. They would all have a new toy.

Guests poured in. “Happy Christmas! Come in, Come in!” the children would shout. The party was going well. The doorbell rang again. One of the guests opened the front door. A little man stepped into the hall. Someone gave the little man a plate of food. The little man made his way into the sitting room. He sat in a chair and ate and drank. people came up and chatted with the little man. He also spoke with Mr. Webster about the cold weather.

Time passed. The little man looked happy. Everyone was having fun. After all, it was a time of joy. After an hour, the little man went to talk to Mr. Webster again.

‘Do you know,’ he said, ‘I don’t know anybody at this party. I was not invited.’

‘Oh!’ cried Mr. Webster in surprise. ‘This is my house, and I am sure I did not invite you. I thought you came with one of our friends.’ ‘No, no,’ replied the man. ‘I don’t know anybody here. I have never met you or your wife before.’ Mr. Webster was shocked to hear this.

The stranger explained ‘I live next door. My wife and I were on our way to visit our son at the other end of town.’ ‘Is your wife here too?’ asked Mr. Webster. He looked around in the room. ‘No, no’ said the little man. She is waiting outside in the car.’

‘What?’ cried Mr. Webster. ‘Has she been waiting long?’ ‘Yes, about an hour. Well you see, we got into the car this evening to go to our son’s house. But one of your guests has parked in front of our gate. The car is blocking our way. I only came in to ask if it could be moved. I expect my wife is wondering where I am.’
