GUIDELINES
2014
All Scholarship Applicants must:
1) Be a resident of Mecklenburg County and a graduating high school student enrolled in a Mecklenburg County
school (public or private)
o Note: Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Charlotte Alumnae Chapter Debutantes are ineligible for chapter sponsored scholarships.
2) Submit a completed application packet with the following information:
o A completed, typed and signed Application Form o Two current signed letters of recommendation:
§ One letter must be from a teacher or school official
§ One letter must be from an adult (e.g. an employer, minister, etc.) Letters from relatives are not eligible.
• Recommendation letters should include the length of time the reference has known the applicant and in what capacity, applicant’s strengths and weaknesses, and why the reference believes the applicant deserves the scholarship.
• The letters of recommendation must be original versions, signed by each of the writers and each placed in a sealed envelope by the writer (photo copies, faxes and electronic
submissions are not acceptable).
o An official school transcript:
§ Official transcript must be in the original, sealed envelope from the school. It should contain a certification seal or stamp by the school. Any opened envelope with a transcript will not be accepted.
§ In addition to all high school grades, transcript must include the applicant’s first semester grades for his/her senior year.
o A typewritten essay: (See Part IV of the application for details and essay topics)
3) Mail a completed typewritten application along with attachments, sealed official transcript, and letters of
recommendations to:

All application materials must be received via United States Postal Service on or before February 25, 2014
4) Attend a personal interview
o Personal interviews will be required for all applicants with completed packets. You will be contacted regarding your interview eligibility in March 2014. Interviews will be conducted in March 2014.

improvement in his/her academics over a two (2) year period.
§ Plan to attend a two (2) or four (4) year institution of higher education in the U.S. during the upcoming academic year
§ Award disbursement based on confirmed enrollment for Fall 2014

§ Must be a student in a Mecklenburg County public or private high school § Must have a weighted cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher

PART IV -‐ ESSAY
Please choose one of the two following essay topics and write an essay of a minimum of 500 words and a maximum of 750 words. The essay must be typed, 12 pt, Times New Roman font, double-‐spaced and on plain white paper.
1. Some people choose friends who are different from themselves. Others choose friends who are similar to themselves. Compare the advantages of having friends who are different from you with the advantages of having friends who are similar to you. Which kind of friend do you prefer for yourself? Why?
2. In your opinion, what is the most important characteristic (for example, honesty, intelligence, a sense of humor) that a person can have to be successful in life? Use specific reasons and examples from your experience to explain your answer. When you write your answer, you are not limited to the examples listed in the
question.
