REPORT OF THE LITERARY ASSOCIATION 2018- 2019

The Literary Association for the Academic year 2018-2019 was formally inaugurated on 2nd July. The office bearers for this year are

President-Bhagyashree.G , Secretary- Caroline Jacks and PG Representative-Sharmila.S.M. As per the submitted proposal, the activities started with “The Best Basic English Training “- a two day workshop for the students of the Dept. of English by Dr.Subramanian, Asst.Proffesor in English , Govt. Arts College,Coimbatore. The workshop trained the students in public speaking and was motivating too.

A poetry recitation competition of the department of English, Tamil, French and Hindi ,was conducted on 3/08/18. Mr.Vignesh, upcoming writer and poet was the Chief Guest. He addressed the students and shared his experiences of writing poetry in a very inspirational mode.

On 20/08/18,Major Dr.Lenna addressed the students of the department on women empowerment. With her PhD in English Literature, Major Leena also addressed the students on Literature reflecting life.

On 10/9/18,Colonel Prashanth Petkar gave a session on the career opportunities for women in the armed forces and guided the final year UG and PG students of the college on how to join the armed forces.

On 24/9/18,Dr.Jessi Vargese, Former Head,Dept. of English, addressed the students on Literary Theory and Criticism. She also gave an insight into research and areas the can be explored by research scholars.

On 15/12/18, Mrs.Sangeetha Shinde Tee, an old student of the department addressed the students on ‘self-development’- a motivational session.

On 18/12/18, a three hour workshop on the creative writing was given by Mrs. Sangeetha Shinde Tee. Her experience in the field inspired the students.

As part of ‘Daffodils’, the competitions took off with the Flamefree Cooking Competition on 31/7/18.

Short Story Writing on 3/8/18. Mehendi on 7/08/18.

Facial Painting on 20/8/18. Pen and paint a poem 21/8/18. Pencil Sketching on 3/09/18. Making Over on 10/09/18. Caricature on 1/10/18. Copy Blogger on 29/10/18. Just a Minute on 20/12/18. Quiz on 12/1/18.

Students Participation outside college was encouraged and they have won laurels for the college.

Students participated in the inter-collegiate competition Florina conducted by Konganadu Arts and Science College, Coimbatore and secured 2nd Prize.

Students participated in the Innovation Club Workshop held in TRP College on 9th January.

Students participated in the Writers Conclave – an interactive workshop with recent writers at PSGR Krishnammal College for Women on 7th January.

Daanya Akil Sait of I BA LIT participated in the digital youth parliament at CSI College Ketti and went on to represent Nilgiris district at the state level competition held in Chennai.

Caroline Jacks of II BA participated in the district elocution competition conducted by the Forest Department held at Government arts college Ooty and secured the first place.

Elakiya of III BA participated in the state elocution completion in Chennai. Today (20/2/2019) students of the department are taking part in the Theatre workshop and competition at Hindustan University Chennai.

Research scholars of the department have presented papers at the National seminar at VHNSN College, Virudhunagar 15/2/19 and thereafter attended a workshop on Recent Trends in Research at Kozhikode

On 22/2/19 a group of students are taking part in the literary competitions at KPS College Kotagiri.

As a part of Extension Activities, English was taught to the students of the Sarguru Tribal High school. Culturals, games and sports was conducted for the school students.

A group of students went regularly to Edapalli School to teach English. On 25th

January, Games was conducted for the children.

Students of the department went to an Educational Tour to Mysore and Bangalore.

Students Achievements

Pavithra won the Silver Medal in the Pykka National Boxing Championship. Social Responsibility

Students inculcatedserving mentality by helping in the flood relief camps in Kerala.

The English Choir comprising of the students of the Department of English grace every event with their lively songs.

A group of 6 students from the Under Graduate Level, participated in “The Comprehensive Theatre Workshop”, conducted by Mr.Ajit Chittur - the art theatre group from Chennai at the Coonoor Club.

Students enthusiastically participated in the Literary Fest held in the Nilgiri Heritage Library, Ooty.

The department crossed another milestone as research department with PhD in English Literature started in October 2018

Reading Club

On 13/07/18, The Reading Club of the department was inaugurated by Miss.Jyothi Mehta and Ms.Niveshna from Ooty. They addressed the students of the department on inculcating reading habits and also shared their reading experiences and how reading helped them to become successful in their personal and professional lives.

The novel “Room” was reviewed by Dr.Bhuvana, Head of the Department. The novel “The Pakistani Bride” and “Water” was reviewed by Dr.Amudha. The Department of Library took the Literature students to the Public Library and the Nilgiri Library,Ooty.

On 6/02/19, Daffodils, the culmination programme of the various competitions conducted during the year was marked with a display of talents by our students in Drama, Singing, Dance and Parade. Mrs.Vasanthi was the Chief Guest and distributed the prizes.

A group of students from the department participated in the inter-collegiate meet on 22\02\19 at KayPeeYes College, Kotagiri and won the overall trophy.

The year 2018-19 indeed proved to be a fruitful one bustling with activities throughout. Our sincere thanks to our Rev Sr. Principal for the constant support and encouraged in all our activities. Our thanks are due to the staff of the department for their motivation and guidance. Finally we thank the Almighty for blessing us with good health and energy in carrying out all our duties to the best of our abilities.
