Happy 90th

Birthday, Jack!

Jack was born and raised in

Pleasant Ridge, Michigan, about 10 miles north of Detroit. His parents entered him into nearby Cranbrook Preparatory School and he

graduated in 1949. He went on to graduate from Harvard University in 1953 with a degree in biology and a concentration in anthropology. After college, Jack was offered a grant by the Michigan

Botanical Gardens to go to Honduras in Central American for several months to prepare an ethnobotanical survey of the economic plants. In Tegucigalpa,

the capital of Honduras, he met his future wife, Olga. Jack went into the capital to buy a small pocket Spanish dictionary at a bookstore and ended up with a wife! He married Olga on September 14, 1955 and they were married for 61 years. Jack and Olga returned to Michigan and Jack got a job at Spitz Laboratories, a company that made educational planetariums for small science centers and school systems. They relocated to Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, where he worked for Spitz for 21 years. He then worked for IMAX for 25 years. Jack also went on to teach introductory Spanish to 4th and 5th graders.

Jack has two children, Sandra and John, and is proud to have five grandchildren. Many thanks to his family and all the individuals who helped make Jack’s special day memorable!

Spring Is in the Air!

Spring fever fell upon us here at Ivy Creek around mid-March. We got creative and painted cherry blossom trees, made pretty rose earrings, and even planted bulbs. Using biodegradable pots, we planted a mixture of bulbs and were all excited to see the little green sprouts poking up through the soil! We are all looking forward to transferring the flowers to our outdoor garden once the weather is warm enough. Hopefully, the flowers will bring butterflies to our garden!

Since we were already gardening, we figured why not turn a favorite snack into a flower? We turned pretzels into flowers! We covered the pretzels with white chocolate and used M&Ms for the petals. Our flower pretzels were the perfect afternoon snack!

Our residents, Helen and Dianne, took advantage of the spring-time weather as well. On a sunny, Thursday afternoon with the temperature in the low 70s, the ladies enjoyed a game of Rummikub on our 4th floor covered patio. Our 4th floor patio is the perfect hangout spot! We are all looking forward to the warmer weather to come!

Let the Shenanigans Begin!

What’s that hiding in the grass? It’s a leprechaun! The Decorating Committee did a fantastic job putting together these leprechauns hiding in the grass crafts. They put the leprechauns on display throughout our Dining Room, adding to the festive shamrock and pots of gold decorations they made as well. Our Dining Room was all ready for our St. Patrick’s Day celebration! Many thanks to our wonderful Decorating Committee for always making our community look festive for the holidays!

For her Irish Chef Demo, Executive Chef Amanda, made us shamrock shakes! She blended mint chocolate chip ice cream with heavy cream, added a few special ingredients, and whipped up this delicious St. Patrick’s Day treat for us! We all enjoyed sipping on our minty shamrock shakes. Thank you, Amanda for making us our shamrock shakes!

We celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with an Irish choir performance. The Ivy Creek Choir performed a great selection of Irish tunes to get everyone into the holiday spirit. They kicked off the performance by singing “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling” and Activity Director Rachael joined in by playing her

flute. They sang the hilarious song “Mrs. Murphy’s Chowder.” If you never heard this song before, we encourage you to listen to it. There’s a whole lot of ingredients mixed into this particular chowder! Resident Nancy sweetly sang the Irish lullaby “Too Ra Loo Rah Loo Rah” and resident Karen moved the audience with her performance of “Danny Boy.” Resident Jim did a wonderful job singing “My Wild Irish Rose” and resident Justine poured her whole heart into singing “Peg O’ My Heart.” Resident Helen read some Irish sayings to the audience and Activity Director Rachael played the “Irish Washerwoman” on her flute. The Irish performance ended with resident Bruce reading an Irish blessing to the crowd. Having the Ivy Creek Choir sing us Irish tunes was a great way to kick off St. Patrick’s Day. Many thanks to all the Choir members and Choir Director Jean for making this program happen! Of course, our St. Patrick’s Day Celebration included corned beef and cabbage, with a side of soda bread. Executive Chef Amanda and our amazing Culinary team outdid themselves making this all-time favorite Irish meal. For dessert, we enjoyed a mint chocolate brownie. Yum! Thanks again to our Culinary team for making this delicious Irish meal!

Later in the afternoon, we searched for shamrocks. Activity Director Rachael hid shamrocks throughout the Activity Room. Each shamrock was assigned a different point value and whoever had the most points at the end of the shamrock search, won a prize. Rachael gave us 15 minutes to search the Activity Room for the shamrocks. We searched high and low for the paper shamrocks. When the timer buzzed, we handed our shamrocks over to Rachael for her to tally up our points and resident Betty was the winner of the shamrock search. Even Executive Chef Amanda provided us with shamrock cookies to nibble on after our search for shamrocks. St. Patrick’s Day was a lot fun here at Ivy Creek! Thank you to all who helped make this day special!

Hippity-hop! Hippity-hop!

Hippity-hop, hippity-hop Easter was on its way! To get ready for Easter, we created these colorful wreaths. We measured out each piece of ribbon, twisted and tied the strands into bows, and attached them to the wire frames. We even added bunny ears to our wreaths! Our Easter wreaths turned out perfect!

What’s Easter without some marshmallow Peeps? We decided to get creative and design homes for our marshmallow bunnies. We attached graham crackers together using vanilla frosting to form our little Peep houses and added pastel colored M&Ms to the roofs. We then placed our marshmallow bunny Peeps in their new homes! They turned out so adorable! Our homes were not very sturdy, but they sure were tasty! For our Easter meal, Executive Chef Amanda and our amazing Culinary team made us ham topped off with pineapple, fingerlings potatoes, and broccolini. For dessert, they made us orange citrus bunny cookies and homemade fudge. Yum!

Of course, our Dining Room was decorated for the occasion! The Decorating Committee set out bunnies and flowers to make our Dining Room festive. Our Assistant Managers, Marlo and Dennis, made these adorable grass nest centerpieces. Each nest contained colorful plastic eggs filled with candy. Two eggs contained a little something extra; a little toy bunny! Residents Dottie and Helen discovered the toy bunnies while opening the eggs. They each won a chocolate bunny as a prize! Congratulations, Dottie and Helen!

Easter was great here at Ivy Creek! We all enjoyed each other’s company while making crafts leading up to Easter and we all enjoyed our Easter meal together. Many thanks go out to all the individuals who helped make Easter special for us here at Ivy Creek.

If you look close enough, you’ll see Assistant Manager Dennis hopping around Ivy Creek! Thanks for spending

the day with us, Flash!

Cuddle a

Kitty!

We had a special guest pay a visit to Ivy Creek! To celebrate cuddle a kitty day, Activity Director Rachael’s cat Flash, stopped in to spend the day with us. Flash is a friendly 17-pound, orange tabby, who Rachael rescued from lower Maryland two and a half years ago. We got to learn all about Flash’s history and run our fingers through his super soft and silky fur. It was nice having a furry friend join our Ivy Creek Family for the day!
