W

hilst I love Christmas (and of course, Christmas

stitching!) I find it hard not to get carried away

at this time of year. I’m my own worst enemy

for getting tempted by too many

adorable projects

,

when all my stitching time’s already carefully allocated out.

I always try to factor time in to my planner to accomodate

a ‘must-make’ project, spotted at short notice. (Like this

stunning festive wreath

adorning our cover! See

page 10… Or the cute Furry Tales on page 18.) I’m such a

sucker for, “Oh, I’ll just try and squeeze this one in!”. You

can’t blame me with so many gorgeous ideas still here…

I promise to try and stay on track with my

festive

stitching

plans though, then I’m looking forward to a

few non-Christmassy ideas in front of the holiday TV. A

classy cushion (p86) as a fab

Reader Panel

Get to know this month’s reader panel, and look out for their favourite projects throughout the issue

Meet our guests

Who’s your favourite designer?

Painter, Thomas Kinkade. I’ve just

completed his Sleeping Beauty piece.

He really knows how to bring it to life.

What’s your fave design?

In issue 242, 'Follow Your Dreams'

by Emma Congdon. It has a great

message that means a lot. It is

definitely on my to-stitch list.

Three words that describe you?

I’d say that I’m chatty, loyal, witty.

If you could stitch with a

celebrity, who’d it be?

I’ve often thought

Bradley Cooper

would be a good

stitcher! He’s been

in some of my

favourite movies.

We would stitch

and natter for

hours on end.

Lindsey

Huxley

“Cross stitching

has helped me

beyond words”

is a stock

controller from

Little Sutton

What has been your favourite

recent design?

I loved the

birdhouses in

issue 245. They

are so bright and

cheerful.

How’d

you start

stitching?

When I was 19, a work

colleague was cross stitching in our

company break room. I asked her

what she was doing and she taught

me how to cross stitch. I fell in love

immediately and haven’t stopped

stitching for the last 38 years!

What is your idea of cross

stitch heaven?

Having my threads and fabric all

organised and all the time in the

world to sit back and stitch away.

Sammie

Warwick

“I love to watch

stitches become the

finished product!”

is a RV park

manager from

Alabama, USA

Fern

preview of the magazine and a gift worth at least £30!

Gift

worth

£30!

What are you stitching?

The DMC ‘Fabulous Forest’ friends

from issue 243. I love working on it.

What’s your stitching disaster?

Once I was stitching in a skirt and

I attached the ENTIRE cross stitch

pattern to my skirt and had to unpick

all of my handiwork!

Who are your stitching pals?

I sometimes stitch with my grandma

who has a massive

stash of threads

and patterns.

What’s been

your proudest

stitching

moment?

Probably when

I completed my first

cross stitch design when I was about

nine-years-old. I was so happy with

the result and proud of myself!

Holiday Wreath

Project

DESIGN BY KEVIN SHEPHERD

Bring the outdoors in with this beautiful Christmas wreath

that’s guaranteed to last for years to come

holidays

F

inding the perfect gift to

stitch for a friend or family

member can sometimes be

tricky, especially when it comes to

Christmas. We think we’ve found

the solution with this classic wreath

design. Its traditional feel is sure to

suit any home, while the clever use

of a simple yet timeless colour palette

adds realistic depth and detail that

anyone would be proud to put on

show. Using 10 different shades of

green, you’ll create layers of texture

by stitching a selection of different

foliage, intertwining fir tree branches

and other seasonal leaves with

contrasting blossoms and berries

in bright, vibrant reds.

Whole cross stitches and

fractionals create the base of the

design, while both backstitch and

long stitch outline and define. With

half stitches helping to lift the finished

piece, this charming project is a joy to

work from the first stitch to the last,

making it a lovely way to brighten up

those long winter evenings.

“Christmas wreaths really celebrate the rich

colours you’ll find in this season’s flora. From

the dark waxy leaves of the holly bush to the

bright red berries and flowers, I love drawing

This is a classic Christmas piece with vibrant reds and greens. It’s a fantastic alternative to a real wreath. I’ll stitch this for my home and it’ll be a great Christmas decoration for the back of my door.

ust completed this cross stitch picture of two lovely, realistic tigers. I have been working on it for about six months, and fortunately there was very little backstitch which, for me, is a real bonus. I love working on animal designs and do so quite often. For a change, though, my next project is going to be a map of the world. It looks quite challenging but I think it will certainly be worth it when it

eventually gets finished! June Munday, Leeds Ruth: This is a beautifully

ello! Just wanted you to see my cushions I made using the pattern in issue 245. They where an absolute joy to make! They reminded me of the dressing table set I made in school the large weave aida and cotton threads. I still have my childhood set. Plus, the cushions can be done in so many ways from playful to classy and are ideal for youngsters just learning to stitch for their rooms... just brilliant! I’m making more for a number of friends who loved these and the proceeds will go to Macmillan Cancer Support. Lynn Hind, via email Sue: What a great idea,

Lynn. We love hearing about stitchers that sell their wares and donate to charity. And, if you ever run out of charitable ideas, turn to page 75 to see which charity we’re supporting this month. Plus, we have a bonus charitable cause this issue with a free chart on page 39 as well!

You’re right about these cushions as well, they’re just fabulous for all ages and make perfect gifts, too. They’re a quick, fun make, especially with Christmas just around the corner!

mmm, I love coffee. It is a real, pure love! I can’t imagine starting a day without hot, delicious mug of coffee. So when I saw this amazing design in your magazine, I knew that I had to stitch it. I was always stitching it while drinking my favourite coffee, of course. Now this design is in my kitchen and I love seeing it every morning, just about as much as I love my coffee. Marta Wichlacz, Poland

Jo: I’m a coffee-lover too, Marta, so I completely

understand. I stitched this design as soon as I could manage and it now hangs over my coffee pot and mugs in the corner of my kitchen.

If you’re after some more stitchy home decor, be sure to have a look at our Kitchen Dresser design next month in issue 250!

R

ecently, I completed this design by Claire Comerford from issue 238. As soon as I saw the pattern, I wanted to stitch it. The cat is adorable and the blue and white china is perfect. I changed it slightly to incorporate the words ‘Happy Retirement’, the recipient’s name and date of retirement. I stitched it as a present for my daughter’s boyfriend’s mum, who was thrilled to receive it. I really enjoyed stitching this design. Thanks so much for a great magazine! Angela Turner, Margate

Sue: What could be a

better retirement gift than a napping kitten? What a great idea, Angela!

For another fantastic gift idea, have a look at the beautiful cushion on page 86. It’ll go with any room and the colours can easily be customised to suit. Who wouldn’t love to receive one of these?

hought you might be interested in seeing my latest project with help from The World of Cross Stitching. I saw this design in issue 216 by Jane Henderson. She had designed two popular skylines using the silhouette style and black aida. The New York skyline caught my eye, as my brother has been there many times and the design was so effective and modern.

This was the first time I’d also stitched on black aida, so it was quite a challenge to start with, but as I got into it after I read a tip from the ‘Ask the Experts’. It was about using a white pillowcase on your knees when stitching on coloured or dark aida. This really helped and I finished the stitching within a few months.

My local frame shop mounted and framed the stitching for me, and he chose to use a red mount to make the red car stand out against the grey shades. He is so good at choosing frames to suit the stitching – always picking out the main shades to help them to ‘pop’ out from the design. Claire Boston, Southport Ruth: I’m glad our tips were

helpful, Claire. It’s a fab finish. If you have any more questions, get in touch! Email [email protected].

hought you might like to see some of my latest stitching. 'The Spitfire' is a kit from Heritage Crafts* that I stitched for my husband’s birthday. It took me eight weeks to finish and a few headaches initially, as I had never seen half stitches done the way so many of them were. None of my books or magazines show stitching in this way, but I sorted it in the end.

The 'Duck in the Rain' I just loved and had to do it for myself, too. Thank you for such a lovely magazine. I’ve subscribed for years and look forward to every issue. Jean Brailey, Petersfield

Sue: It sounds like you’ve been busy, Jean and it looks like your

so-called squashed fractionals turned out well. These are some fun projects. If you’re looking for some more cuties to stitch for yourself, don’t forget to have a look at our Furry Tales friends on page 18. They’re so precious, I can’t wait to start on it myself!

Finally Fizzy

H

i, I thought I would send a photo of little Fizzy Moon that I finished stitching while watching the Olympics. It doesn’t sound much of an achievement, but it has been four years in the making. I started while on holiday watching the 2012 London Olympics, took it to Florida in 2013, to the caravan for my 40th birthday in 2014 and on every other trip we’ve had. I can now enjoy reading the magazine before starting my next cover kit! Rachel Ely Famely, Gainsborough

Jo: Wow, great that this little

Fizzy is finally finished, Rachel! Did you see this month’s Ralph Robin cover kit? He’s a cutie.

H

ere is my latest finish, 'Catch the wind' by Butternut Road, although I can’t take all of the credit as this was started by my mum many years ago. She loved to cross stitch but stopped due to her Parkinson’s disease when she had to put her stitching away. Sadly she is no longer with us.

I came across this project

when I was looking through her stitching things, and I recall she liked this because she was one of three girls herself. Being a cross stitcher, I know how much time goes into it and this project was close to being finished, so I decided to complete it and give it to my dad as a surprise for his birthday. I think my mum would have been happy with the end result. This project is special to me as it is the only piece both myself and my mum worked on. I hope my dad likes it! Susan Harrison, Middlesbrough

Leela: What a special project, Susan. Thanks for sharing.

This is sure to be a wonderful keepsake that will be cherished for years to come. We sure hope your dad likes it!

T

his is from a chart book that was free with issue 242 of your magazine. I very rarely make anything for myself so this time I thought I’d make it special and crocheted a lace border around my stitching and then attach it to a towel. I normally use ribbon but I have to admit, this is so pretty I’ll probably do my own border every time now.

Thank you for the wide selection of great patterns you put in your magazines, I especially love the alphabet charts each month and the bonus chart books! Teresa Ledbrook, via email Ruth: We’re glad you enjoyed the ABC chart book with issue 242, Teresa – and what a fab making-up idea. Being able to crochet a lace border makes the finished piece that much more special.

If you like our alphabet designs, be sure to turn to page 27 for our last Christmas-themed set of the season – a candy cane

Plus, if it’s chart books you’re after, I hope you saw the bonus chart book with issue 248? It’s full of festive designs for tags and cards, plus comes with two free metallic threads. If you missed it, turn to page 67 for details on ordering back issues.

Next month’s fab gift is the 2017 Stitcher’s Diary which has a cute furry friends chart for you to stitch each month. Make sure you don’t miss out on that one!

CRAFTY CROCHET CROSS STITCH

Threading

thank yous

H

i, I would like to say thanks for the brilliant Thread Cutter from with issue 245! It looks as though it will be the most useful free gift ever. I travel twice a year to visit my daughter in Los Angeles and have never been able to do my cross stitching on the journey because of not being able to take scissors, no matter how small, on the aircraft. I’m hoping that this free gift won’t cause a problem at airport security! Rita Lord, via email Leela: Yay! I’m glad you’ll find this useful, Rita. I know I will. I always had trouble travelling with scissors, too.

A great project for a flight might be a cute Christmas birdhouse card, which you can find on page 70.
