Server SAN storage VirtualizationWHY IS VMWARE VSPHERE SO POWERFUL WHY DOES IT WORK SO WELL SO WELL WITH PRIMERY S5 SERVERS?
VMware vSphere 4 includes many new features and improvements. One of the most important improvements is the full implementation of virtualization technology delivered by hardware. Intel’s new processor family (Xeon 5500, called Nehalem) used in PRIMERGY S5 servers, offers the 2nd generation of virtualization support in CPU, chip-set and PCI-cards. Main tasks for memory management, interrupt management and I/O handling are allocated by the hypervisor, which allows performance improvements and higher workloads per server. Compared to the predecessor 3.x version or other virtualization products, VMware offers the most effective hypervisor.
PACKAGING:
VMware designed their new vSphere product in scalable editions (Standard, Advanced, Enterprise and EnterprisePlus) for large customers and in an “All in One” edition (Essentials and Essentials Plus), specially developed for the SMB market. Two flavors of the “All in One” packages are available:
Essentials Essentials Plus
4-way vSMP Vmware ESXi or ESX vCenter Server for Essentials
(up to 3 servers) Update Manager
VC Agent
4-way vSMP Vmware ESXi or ESX vCenter Server for Essentials
(up to 3 servers) Update Manager
VC Agent Data Recovery High Availability
WHAT ARE THE KEY COMPONENTS OF
VMWARE VSPHERE ESSENTIALS (PLUS) EDITION?
• VMware vSphere 4 delivers high performance through implementation of the 2nd generation of virtualization support by Intel virtualization technology. • VMware ESX and VMware ESXi provide a robust, production proven, high performance virtualization layer that allows multiple virtual machines to share the
computing, networking and storage resources of a single physical server.
• VMware vCenter™ Server for Essentials provides rapid provisioning, centralized management and performance monitoring, with physical-to-virtual (P2V)
machine conversion, wizard-based deployment and a host of other features.
• VMware vCenter Update Manager provides automated patch and update management for VMware ESX hosts, as well as for virtual machines running select versions of Windows and Linux.
• VMware High Availability (HA) provides hardware-independent failover for virtual machines on VMware ESX hosts without the cost or complexity of traditional solutions for physical systems.
The Essentials and the Essentials Plus edition are attractively priced. In comparison to other offerings, the VMware vSphere Essential Plus edition has the unique Data Recovery feature and the important High Availability feature. In the preceding VMware version, called Foundation, the HA feature was included, only in the higher Standard edition. So customers can now take advantage of higher availability levels. Data Recovery is a new interesting feature in vSphere 4, which provides what is needed to backup virtual machines. These are the reasons why we recommend VMware vSphere Essentials Plus edition.
WHAT IS POSSIBLE WITH ESSENTIALS PLUS?
The “All in One Bundle” includes the licenses for 6 processors in up to 3 servers, a vCenter Server for management, and the Data Recovery and High Availability features. Minimum a SNS support of 1 year is required, which can be expanded later on.
This edition supports up to 6 cores per processor and up to 256 GB memory per ESX host. Virtual machines support up to 64 GM memory and 4 virtual CPUs. To configure the right parameter of memory per server, we recommend 2.5 GB memory for each virtual machine. A two socket PRIMERGY RX200S5 server with 2x Intel® Xeon® Processor 5520 can handle 10-14 workloads, conservatively calculated. 20 workloads, depending on the usage of resources, are
possible.
WHY USE AN EMBEDDED HYPERVISOR?
An embedded hypervisor helps customers to reduce time for installation because no internal disks are required in the server system. The customer only has to switch the server on and to insert the password and the IP-address. With an embedded hypervisor, an ESX server starts faster and consumes less power at better MTBF time. Embedded hypervisors are available for all certified PRIMERGY servers.

MONITORING AND HIGH AVAILABILITY
A new VM Monitoring page has been added to Cluster Settings dialog box in the vCenter console to allow customers to control their virtual machines. When Enable VM Monitoring is selected, HA uses VMware Tools to evaluate whether each virtual machine in the cluster is running by checking for regular heartbeats of the guest operating system. If the VM monitoring service does not receive heartbeats, the service determines whether the virtual machine has failed and, if it has failed, restarts the virtual machine to restore service.
To help diagnostic issues, VM Monitoring captures a screenshot of the console before restarting the virtual machine. By default VM Monitoring captures up to 10 screenshots and saves them in the same directory as the configuration file of the virtual machine.
When VM Monitoring is disabled, HA continues to monitor the heartbeat of virtual machines and vCenter alarms are still enabled. However, if there is a loss of heartbeat, HA does not automatically reboot the virtual machine.
Monitoring sensitivity allows you to customize how quickly failures are detected. To avoid restarting virtual machines repeatedly for non-transient errors, HA restarts virtual machines only three times during a certain configurable time interval. After virtual machines have been restarted three times, VMware HA makes no further attempts to restart the virtual machines before any subsequent failures until the specified time has elapsed. HA provides three default settings: High, Medium, and Low. Customers can also customize the intervals by choosing the Custom option shown here.
Under Virtual Machine Settings you can override the default monitoring sensitivity level so certain virtual machines are more or less aggressively monitored. Specific custom values can also be set using advanced options.
Enable automatic restart due to failure of guest operating system
Determine how quickly failures are detected
Set monitoring sensitivity for individual virtual machines
In case of a problem with the ESX host, the virtual machines from this host can be restarted automatically on another ESX host by the HA feature of the license. This is possible because of a cluster like file system of VMware.

Ability to suspend host monitoring Choice of three admission control strategiesHOW TO BACKUP UP VIRTUAL MACHINES
All customers should backup their data. Normally this requires backup software, designed to backup virtual machines. In addition, backup agents have to be installed on each virtual machine. Customers also need to know if the agent supports all operating systems which are in use. A support agreement for this additional software must be contracted. A separate management instance and additional costs and efforts are the result.
VMware Data Recovery is a new backup and recovery product from VMware for up to 100VM’s. It is managed via a vCenter Server plug-in and uses the vStorage APIs for Data Protection. It is designed for small- to medium-sized businesses, which currently do not have a backup solution or are looking for a backup solution that it optimized for virtualization.
When Data Recovery is opened in the vSphere Client for the first time, Data Recovery provides a simple interface to perform basic configuration, such as defining network parameters. After that, wizard interfaces allows the user to create, configure and schedule backup jobs quickly.
Data Recovery is an agentless, disk-based solution, allowing faster restores than solutions which write to backup tape. Customers can restore individual files or entire images. Multiple restore points for each virtual machine are displayed to easily select a copy to restore from a specific point in time. 8 jobs can be run at the same time.
Data Recovery utilizes built in data de-duplication technology to save significant disk space. De-duplication eliminates duplicate storage blocks as backup data is streamed to disk. Therefore, you can maintain multiple point-in-time copies of virtual machines using only a fraction of the storage. To efficiently utilize the backup window and available resources, the de-duplication operation occurs as the virtual machine backup is stored to disk. Fujitsu recommends saving the backup data on separate Nearline disks on the ETERNUS DX60/DX80, while SAS disks are used for production data.
The Fujitsu PRIMERGY RX200 S5 server, delivered with 2 Sockets, is the overall highest 8-core result on VMware VMmark* virtualization benchmark in the class of 1U servers. Results referenced are current as of August 12th, 2009. All results can be found at http://vmware.com/products/vmmark/results.html. *VMmark is a free tool, developed by VMware. Hardware vendors, virtualization software vendors and other organizations can use it to measure the performance and scalability of applications running in virtualized environments.
