Coach Mike Littlewood

Coach Mike Littlewood (BYU `93, played `85-`88) is in his fourth sea-son as head coach at BYU, 32-21 (.604) in 2013; 22-31 (.415) in 2014 and 28-25 in 2015 for an 82-77 (.516) record with the Cougars. The 49-year-old coach had a 219-128 (.631) record in seven seasons at the four-year level at Dixie State College and had a 382-127 (.750) mark in 10 seasons when Dixie was a junior college. He is assisted by Trent Pratt (Dixie `08), Brent Haring (So. Virginia `07) and Jeremy Thomas (BYU `99), all in their fourth year at BYU.

Series Record vs. Utah Valley, Niagara

BYU leads the series with Utah Valley University, 20-8. The Cougars won the first three of five games in 2005 when the series started. UVU won its first game in 10 tries at Miller Park in 2010, 14-12 in 10 in-nings. BYU has a 9-5 record at UVU, winning the past two years in Orem, but losing 8-3 to the Wolverines earlier in 2014 at Provo. This is the first meeting between BYU and Niagara.

Hitting Streaks

Brennon Lund and Bronson Larsen lead BYU with current five-game hitting streaks. Tanner Chauncey’s htting streak was ended at 17-games two weeks ago, as did Lund’s streak ended at six games.

BYU in 2016 NCAA statistics

BYU is No 4 in the nation in batting average (.348). The Cougars are ranked No. 5 in hits (146), No. 13 in home runs (15), No. 14 in slug-ging in week three of the 2016 NCAA rankings. Brennon Lund is No. 5 in hits (24) and No. 28 in batting average (.480). Colton

Shaver is No. 16 in doubles (6) and Kyle Dean is No. 24 in home runs (4).

Regarding BYU This Season

BYU has six players who are married: Keaton Cenatiempo, Hayden Nielsen, Hayden Rogers, Michael Rucker, Eric Urry and Connor Wil-liams.

Incorporated into this year’s team are seven players who have just finished serving two-year Church missions (Brennon Anderson, Bo Burrup, Nate Favero, Brock Hale, Rhett Parkinson, Connor Williams and Jordan Wood).

Three new players transferred to BYU (Kendall Motes, Rhett Parkinson and Connor Williams). Michael Rucker transferred two years ago from at Gonzaga. Motes transferred from Chemeketa CC and Williams and Parkinson transferred from Salt Lake CC.

Bryan Call (Burt), Jackson Cluff (Paul), Court Iorg (Dane) and Clay Sisler (Ron) have fathers who also played for BYU baseball.

Deseret First Duel

For the seventh of eight times BYU won the baseball portion of the De-seret First Duel in games against Utah. BYU won the 2014 competition due to a tiebreaker with a 38-21 run differential after the two teams split the four-game series. BYU won the baseball portion of the Duel in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. The 2008 series won by BYU and the 2011series won by Utah were also by run differential.

Oldest-Youngest on the team

The oldest on the team is 25-year-old Eric Urry and the youngest are 18-year-olds Zach Brinkerhoff and Clay Sisler.

BYU vs. WCC in 2016

Here are a couple of interesting baseball facts on the WCC. Pepperdine won the College World Series in 1992. Of the 10 WCC teams, only St. Mary’s has not par-ticipated in the NCAA post-season tourna-ment. BYU’s 1-1 tie against Pepperdine came in the second game of a doubleheader in 1963. Quick Look at BYU

BYU was picked to finish sixth in the West Coast Conference after placing seventh its third year in the league and second under Coach Mike wood. The Cougars return 20 lettermen and lost 12 letterman for Little-wood’s third season. Preseason WCC prognostications have BYU third (D1baseball .com) and fifth by Perfect Game.

2015 Home Season

The Cougars finished the 2015 home season with a 189-108 (.636) record at Larry H. Miller Field which seats 2,204 fans in its 14th season since it was built. In the first nine years BYU drew 218,981 fans for an average of 1,177 and 142,248 at night for an average of 1,452. The largest crowd at home during 2013 was 1,593 vs. Pepperdine and the crowd of 11,240 fans at LSU was the largest on the road. BYU drew 20, 313 fans (averaging 967) for an 16-5 home record in 2013.

Lund Rawlings WCC Player of Week vs. Saint Louis

Brennon Lund was named the Rawlings West Coast Conference Player of the Week by the league office and by College Sports Madness for his per-formance in the first three games against Saint Louis University. Starting the season with three wins over Saint Louis University, Lund was 10-for-16 (.625) with three RBI, two doubles, one walk, one strikeout, one stolen base and 11 putouts (eight came in the 5-0 shutout) in the deepest center-field (433 feet) in the country for a minor league park at AAA Cashman Field, home of the 51s in Las Vegas.

Rucker Rawlings WCC Pitcher of Week at Samford

Michael Rucker of BYU was named the Rawlings West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week by the conference office for his outing at Samford. The junior right-hander struck out a Samford batter in each of his seven innings (four swinging) of the series-opening 7-1 win at previously un-defeated Samford. In that game he threw 98 pitches and surrendered four hits to earn his second victory of the season. Rucker lowered his earned run average from 3.00 to 1.38, giving up an unearned run in the 7-1 vic-tory, which was BYU’s lead when he left the game after seven innings. Rucker retired Samford in order in the first, fourth and seventh innings to improve BYU’s team record to 5-0.

BYU played four nationally ranked teams last season, UC Santa Bar-bara, Nebraska, San Diego and upset No. 29 San Diego State. In 2014, the Cougars played two nationally ranked teams, No. 19 TCU and No. 26 Texas Tech. In 2013, BYU upset then No. 2 LSU (NCBWA, also No. 3 Collegiate Baseball & No. 10 Baseball America/USA Today), 9-4. Also in 2013, BYU twice upset No. 21 UC Irvine (NCBWA, also No. 21 Baseball America/USA Today & No. 22 Collegiate Baseball), 6-3 and 3-1; and BYU upset No. 22 Gonzaga (Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball). In 1983 prior to the NCAA Regionals BYU was ranked No. 1 after upsetting then No. 1 San Diego State in the WAC Playoffs. In 2012 BYU lost at No. 4 Arkansas and No. 7 Stanford. Inducted Last Year

Coaches Mike Littlewood (& son Marcus), Trent Pratt, Gary Pullins, Bobby Noel and Dave Nelson were inducted in January 2015 into the Mountain West Baseball Academy Hall of Fame. Coach Littlewood, Pullins, Noel and Nelson also played for the Cougars.

• Bo Burrup—Uncle Sam Christensen drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates, is a member of the hall of fame at the University of Colorado-Pueblo and was named to the RMAC All-Century Team in 2008. Uncle Ed Christensen played football for Idaho State.

• Triston Busse—Father played college football for Abilene Christian University. Grandfather was a catcher for the Detroit Tigers orga-nization • Keaton Cenatiempo—Father, Kris, played baseball for Washington State in 1986. Wife Sadie Pond played volleyball for SLCC. • Tanner Chauncey—Grandson of BYU Basketball Hall of Famer Terry Tebbs (1953-56).

• Jackson Cluff—Father, Paul, played baseball for BYU and was two-time All-American (1988-89) who was drafted in 4th round by Boise Hawks. • Kyle Dean—Mother, played water polo at USC on the men’s team.

• Nate Favero—Uncle is Mike Nielsen who pitched for BYU, 1990-1992, 1995. Brother Matt and cousin Pete signed NLI last Novem-ber with BYU.

• Grant Hodges—Grandfather played football at the University of Tampa.

• Casey Jacobsen—Older brother Mackay, currently on a mission to Louisville, Ky., played for BYU baseball in 2014. Father was a pole vaulter for BYU track team.

• Court Iorg— Father Dane (1969-71) and uncle Lee (1971-74) were All-Americans at BYU before pro baseball careers. Dane played 10 years for St. Louis Cardinals, Kansas City Royals, San Diego Padres and Philadelphia Phillies. Brother Seth played baseball for BYU (2004-05). Prior to his pro career, cousin Isaac played for BYU (1999). Uncle Garth played for the Toronto Blue Jays and is currently first base coach for the Milwaukee Brewers. Cousin Cale played for Alabama before being drafted and playing for the Detroit Tiger organization. Cousin Eli played for Tennessee before being drafted and playing for the Houston Astros.

• Keaton Kringlen—Father Bill played baseball for UC Santa Barbara (1966-68). Grandfather Glen Milne was invited to play for the Salt Lake Bees, but served instead with the Coast Guard. Uncle Blaine Milne played baseball for BYU (1990-91) and in the St. Louis Cardinals organization. Uncle Gary Milne played football, basketball and baseball at Dixie JC. Cousin Adam Milne played baseball at Southern Utah. Cousins Dustin and Travis Milne played baseball at Dixie JC.

• Mike Littlewood—son Marcus was drafted in the second round of the 2010 MLB Draft by the Seattle Mariners, son Tyson played baseball at SLCC (2010) and Dixie State College (2008, 11-12), son Nate played baseball at SLCC (2009-10) and Dixie State College (2011-12). Younger brother Dave played baseball at Utah. Cousins Steve Bruce played basketball at Snow College and Assuption Col-lege (Mass.) Uncle George Bruce coached at Dugway High School for 40 years and is now at West Lake High.

Mother played volleyball at Southern Utah. • Mason Marshall—Grandfather Jerry McCleary played basketball for the University of Utah (1956-57). Uncle played baseball for the University of Utah. Cousin Marci played softball at Dixie and Southern Utah (2006). Cousin Willie Pratt plays baseball at Utah Valley University after transferring from the College of Southern Idaho (2007). Cousin Kristen Pratt played softball at UVCC. Uncle Paul Pratt and cousin Mike Shephard (1996-99) played basketball and football, respectively, at Southern Utah.

• Hayden Rogers— Cousin Stephen Rogers played BYU basketball (2010-12). Cousin Korie Rogers was an All-American volleyball player at BYU (1994-98). His wife Katie Rigby plays soccer for the University of Utah.
