Students will be exploring the media center, previewing books and judging them on interest and text levels, and then checking out a biography to read at home. Phase III ends with students making a presentation to their peers and evaluating the tutoring experience.

Lesson 37

Reading Interest Survey

Exploring Books— Students pick three books (fiction, information and procedural). They preview the books on interest (based on book jacket and author) and difficulty of text (based on skimming a few pages with the Rule of Five). • Selecting a book— Students select a biography to read

independently. The book will form the basis on the next two lessons, which including writing and presenting about the selection.

Checking it out— Students review the rules for checking out and returning books.

Lesson 38

Check in on reading progress— Tutors are provided with two script options, depending on whether the tutee has finished or not finished reading the biography he or she selected.

Planning a presentation— Tutees use the book review and personal skills graphic organizer to begin planning a poster presentation.

Completing the poster— Tutees will create a poster to use as a prompt for making a brief presentation to the tutoring class, or another tutor/tutee pair.

Lesson 39

Making a presentation— Tutees will present to either another pair or the entire group.

Lesson 40

Check in on reading progress— Tutors are provided with two script options, depending on whether the tutee has finished or not finished reading the biography he or she selected.

Post-reading activity— Tutees will plan and write a letter to the subject of the selected biography.
