The Ninth Siddhi Page 9 “Miracles happen every day. Not just in remote

country villages or at holy sites halfway across the globe, but here, in our own lives. They bubble up from their hidden source, surround us

with opportunities, and disappear. They are the shooting stars of everyday life. When we see

shooting stars, their rarity makes them seem magical, but in fact, they streak across the sky all

The Spontaneous Fulfillment of Desire

Introduction

Author’s note: If you run across a word or concept you are not familiar with, please use the glossary at the back of the book.

Prosperity is a state of grace

Prosperity is a state of grace, abundance and well being that is within your grasp. It is your human duty to be happy and wealthy.

(10)

The Ninth Siddhi Page 10 But, you must choose it! You must go after wealth and prosperity with gusto, determination and perseverance.

To live and not be wealthy is a misfortune. You could have been born rich just as easily as having been born poor. No matter where you are now; no matter how frustrated you are; no matter how desperate you are, you can overcome the obstacles that stand in your way to an abundant and prosperous life. You have the power to change the world by changing your thoughts, feelings and intentions. You have the power and ability to manifest wealth and abundance. This book will start you on this path.

Ninth Yogic Power

The practitioners of the Ninth Siddhi believe that within each one of us is a powerful energized spirit. This spirit seeks fulfillment in the world through the acquisition of knowledge and wisdom. The knowledge that our spirits seek that allows it to blossom has been forgotten by many of our spiritual leaders. The food which our spirits so desperately need is not available through traditional orthodox channels. This book tries to inform the reader of the possibilities available to people that will lead to wealth and

prosperity albeit in a nontraditional way. That is, to a state of grace producing an abundance of wealth and prosperity. Dr. Gopala, the founder of this system, calls this state of grace the ninth yogic power. As will be discussed in later chapters, this state of grace is very pertinent to Christians since the discovery of the Gnostic gospels in 1945.

Over the last 4,000 years, knowledge of the potential of the human spirit has come to light when needed most by people who are suffering. Today seems to be that time. Most would agree that yoga has become a ubiquitous word in the last few decades. And, Noetic Science has made significant inroads in studying yogic practices and

(11)

The Ninth Siddhi Page 11 has made more than a few innovations regarding human potential. Dr. Gopala cofounder of The Ninth Siddhi has taken all that is known in yoga and Noetic science and condensed this knowledge into a system that produces wealth by using the mind and spirit to predict a specific future event.

The system is a process

We believe you have the power to win the lottery using ancient techniques combined with scientific innovation. I know it sounds incredulous. I know it sounds unreasonable. I know it sounds unbelievable. But it is true and it is a reality. However, we are not saying that it is easy. The system is a process. You need to practice the system to get good at it. But you have the power using this system to create wealth and prosperity beyond your imagination. The basis of the system is to energize an intention for wealth and abundance close to the Source of Thought. As part of the training system, you will be taught to use charts to track your progress. In addition, The Ninth Siddhi uses a ranking system. In order to progress through the ranks of Initiate, Soldier of Peace and

Principal, you must successfully win a three number game as well as a four number game. After learning the technique by

successfully predicting a three and four number lottery sequence, the Soldier may join a group of others who have the same training and work within the group to predict a mega game lottery

sequence.

We show using scientific evidence that everyone has an inherent ability to use this system to acquire wealth and abundance while producing peace and non-violence in the community. But you must persevere; you must be proactive; you must practice daily.

The Ninth Siddhi Page 12

An incredulous example

Look at it like this! Let’s take my wrist watch and your wrist watch set them to exactly the same time and put them both on the kitchen table. Let’s take your wrist watch and put it on a rocket ship and let it orbit the Earth a few times. Let’s bring your watch back and set it on the kitchen table. Let’s look at the time on each watch. They will

show different times. Scientists have shown that clocks tick at

different speeds the further away one clock gets from a gravitational field as large as the Earths. How can this be? This is incredulous. It is

unreasonable to think that clocks tick at different speeds under any

conditions. Still, the United States Army adjusts the GPS (Global Positioning System) satellites every 15 minutes because the clock on the Earth and the clock on the satellite in space tick at different speeds. If the clocks are not adjusted our GPS system would get out of sync. The culprit here is Dr. Einstein. Einstein proved that space and time are related in strange ways, which mere mortals like us may never understand.

Just like in space, as Einstein predicted, at the most subtle level of our mind, time and space are not as we experience them while we are awake. At the deepest level of our minds, near the source of our thoughts, we are not bound by time and space. As a matter of fact, we argue that this fact gives our mind and spirit predictive ability. We have named this subtle state of mind the Source of Thought. The Ninth Siddhi teaches you how to experience the Source of Thought and use its predictive potential to manifest wealth and prosperity.

(13)

The Ninth Siddhi Page 13 Really, there are a lot of incredulous examples that we could talk about that would show we do not understand our day-time reality as well as we think we do. Did you know that if we put you on a space ship and speeded you up to near the speed of light for a few years when you came back to earth 100 years would have gone by? You would have traveled into the future. These facts seem

incredulous and unreasonable in our everyday life, yet proven by Nobel Prize winning scientists all around the world. These

scientific discoveries show that our everyday mundane experience is not complete. Much more exists to be experienced. The Ninth Siddhi will teach you how to go beyond the mundane and experience a state of grace called Transcendence.

With these scientific examples, it is not hard to believe that there exists a field of being – a fourth state of consciousness - available to you that has predictive potential. Although we decided to call this fourth state of consciousness the Source of Thought, this experience has gone by many other names over the last 4,000 years. A few names are Atma, Para, Pure Awareness, Transcendental Awareness, Bliss Consciousness, Samadhi, Transcendental Consciousness, and State of Being. And now a new more modern name, The Unified

Field, coined by Dr. John Hagelin, a director at the Institute for

Noetic Science.

Basis of the System

The basis of the system is to set an energized intention to predict a winning lottery number close to the Source of Thought. This book will teach you how to accomplish this task.

Before we begin, we take a few pages in Chapter One to make you aware of the founder of this system – Dr. Gopala. He is the

(14)

The Ninth Siddhi Page 14 The rest of the book is divided into two sections: The Tradition Section and the Craft Section.

The Tradition Section discusses the basis of the system, namely to set an energized intention close to the Source of Thought in order to predict, prophesize, or heal. The technique is discussed through the tradition of Eastern thought, the Jewish Tradition, and the new Christian Gnostic Gospels. This technique has been used by people of all faiths to predict and heal for over 4,000 years.

In the East, the technique was also used to teach levitation and invisibility as well as six other yogic powers. Today we use this technique to predict the lottery, and thus, it is the ninth technique or the ninth yogic power. We choose to use the Sanskrit word

“Siddhi” instead of the western word “power,” so we call the system The Ninth Siddhi. The Ninth Siddhi has an incredible tradition which crosses cultural boundaries and religious experience. We at the Ninth Siddhi believe that all practitioners should know the tradition of this technique that aspires to teach a super normal skill. This tradition will create confidence in the initiate, remove any doubt about the nature of the technique, and provide the practitioner with a basis for additional study.

In the Craft Section, we show you how to approach the Source of Thought, set an energized intention, and use charts to keep it all in perspective.

The Tradition Section

The Tradition Section is divided into six chapters. The first chapter discusses Dr. Gopala, the founder and inspiration for The Ninth Siddhi. Chapter two is titled the Bhagavad-Gita. In this chapter, we discuss the various revivals of this technique through time as well as define the meaning of Being and Transcendental Awareness. Many important concepts are developed such as the Maharishi

(15)

The Ninth Siddhi Page 15 Effect, “Right Action,” the Maharishi Doctrine, the Super Radiance Effect, and the World Peace Project. These concepts form an important part of the Ninth Siddhi philosophy and are continually returned to in later chapters. The reader may consider spending extra time studying and internalizing this chapter. Many of the terms and concepts are new to Westerners. However, those familiar with the New Christian Gospels found in 1945 may be surprised at the similarities between these gospels and the concepts discussed in this chapter.

Chapter three is titled The Kabbalah. In chapter three, we show the technique of experiencing the Source of Thought is alive and well in the mystical tradition of Judaism. We also show how ideas

concerning Transcendental Being are revived in the Torah and how that revival affects The Ninth Siddhi.

Chapter Four is titled The New Christian Gospels. This chapter is dedicated to Elaine Pagels for translating the New Gospels and publishing her bestselling book The Gnostic Gospels. Without this book, we would not have understood the immense power of the Ninth Siddhi technique. Finally, we get to understand the link between eastern yogic powers and Christian miracles. In this chapter, we find that during the time of Christ, devotees were using meditative techniques similar to the Ninth Siddhi to change their lives from one of great suffering to one of peace, love and bliss. Over and over again, in the early days of Christianity, we see examples of Christ teaching the virtues of Transcendence. In the later sections of the Chapter, we ask the question, “Why were Christians denied this wisdom and knowledge of Transcendental Awareness for the last 1,700 years?” You may be surprised at the answer.

(16)

The Ninth Siddhi Page 16 Chapter Five is titled Globalization of Being. In this chapter, we discuss the meaning and consequences of Transcendental/Gnostic revivals in the east, in Judaism and Christianity. In a Lullaby for

Mary we discuss the results of an energized intention set close to the

Source of Thought and its effect on women for the last 2000 years. We try to show how the revival of Being and The Ninth Siddhi could affect world peace in the long term and implications for war in the short term.

In chapter six, The Science of Being, we discuss Transcendental Awareness, Transcendence, and lottery prediction from a scientific point of view. We quickly see that new sciences like Quantum Mechanics are authenticating what a short historical time ago was thought to be a mystical belief.

The Craft Section

In the Craft section, we learn how to predict winning lottery numbers using the Ninth Siddhi Technique.

Chapter seven is titled The Craft. In this chapter, we discuss the objective of the Craft and the connection between the Divine Proportion number sequence and the Lottery Number Sequence. We learn about our first Mantra called Laxmi’s Mantra and are given an overview of the Craft which includes rankings and worksheets.

Chapter eight is titled Becoming an Initiate. In this chapter, we discuss how to use the Mantra sound file. In addition, the Ninth Siddhi Point System is revealed along with how to chart the points. A ten day moving average is introduced to verify improvement in your skill at prediction. Finally, my three number game charts are used as a tool for improvement. In this part of the chapter, I publish

(17)

The Ninth Siddhi Page 17 my own chart on how I won a three number game in 32 days. Much can be learned from my story.

Chapter nine is titled Becoming a Soldier of Peace. A new Mantra is introduced for four number games and an updated point system and worksheets are discussed.

Chapter ten is titled The Mega Games. In the Mega Games chapter, we discuss how to win the five and six number games. In the Ninth Siddhi, groups are organized to win these Mega games. Mary’s

Lullaby is analyzed from a group meditation point of view.

Individual Rating Worksheets are developed as are Group Worksheets. In addition, for special situations, Matrices are developed and discussed.

Following is Chapter One, which details the inspiration for this book and the foundation on which it was developed.

CHAPTER 1

“Better than a thousand hollow words, is one word that brings peace.”

Buddha

About Dr. Gopala

Founder of

The Ninth Siddhi

First Meeting

I first met Dr. Gopala at a “Spiritual Regeneration Movement” residence course many decades ago. These yoga courses were usually taught over a long weekend and regularly held at Catholic retreat houses around the country. He was a guest lecturer

discussing Yogic Siddhis (yogic powers) primarily levitation (sometimes called Yogic Flying) and invisibility now called remote viewing by educators and the military. I attended all his lectures. He was a favorite among the initiates and spoke with a clear passion for his specialty.

During that weekend, on a wakeful night, I had a chance to speak with Dr. Gopala. It was not unusual for the attendees to be milling

(19)

The Ninth Siddhi Page 19 around at all hours of the night. The course leaders had us

“rounding” (a series of yoga practices involving breathing, stretching and meditation) all day long when not attending a lecture. It seemed like after all the stretching and meditating, we did not need as much sleep as usual. It was just dawn when I sat on an outdoor bench next to Dr. Gopala overlooking a gentle river slowly meandering around the retreat center. It was an odd experience. Coupled with his spiritual presence, the river was teeming with an abundance of life. Mayfly and Caddis were beginning to hatch as trout were beginning their morning feast, their rises more rhythmic than random. I searched for the courage to speak.

I was nervous at first, the way students are when speaking to a professor, but he had a calming effect on me. We discussed invisibility since that was the last lecture he had given and the Siddhi I was most interested in at the time. He answered all my questions. He said he was somewhat saddened by the way the West was using the Siddhis, which had for thousands of years been secret and mysterious. In the past, these yogic powers had only been taught to the highest caste of Brahmins.

He went on to say that the military was using invisibility, which they renamed remote viewing and were using this Siddhi (yogic power) to spy on the Russians. He was less saddened by the fact they were using a Siddhi to spy and more saddened by the way this yogic technique had been studied, quantified, analyzed and taught. He went on to say, offhandedly, it would be easier to teach students about the predictive potential of the Source of Thought or lottery predictions than many of the ancient yoga Siddhis. Of course, all I heard was lottery predictions.

(20)

The Ninth Siddhi Page 20 I asked Dr. Gopala what he meant by lottery predictions trying not to sound overly excited. Just like he had discussed in his lectures, he said, if getting close to the Source of Thought could bring about remote viewing, then with the properly energized intention and the Matra-vrttas (Divine Proportion or Golden Ratio - a sacred number used in one of the categories of meters in Sanskrit and Prakit poetry around A.D. 1100), we should be able to use the predictive potential of the Source of Thought to make reasonable lottery predictions. Actually, he went on to say, lottery predictions should be easier then remote viewing since consciousness didn’t need be maintained near the Source of Thought for long periods time. With a strong, energized and unselfish intention, most people should be able to perform this technique. It seemed we talked for hours that morning. Eventually, Dr. Gopala got up from the bench and headed for the retreat house deep in contemplation. The sun had now risen, choirs of birds now trumpeted a new day and I still had a million more questions. But I don’t think Dr. Gopala had the details of the system worked out yet, that would come years later.

Second Meeting

Many years went by but I could never quite get the idea of a new modern Siddhi out of my mind. It made a lot of sense. Using these ancient techniques to predict the future was not out of the question. Considering that Dr. Gopala earned his PhD in physics, he knew a lot about the way the physical world was organized as well as how the mind worked. If anyone could find a system that could relate the predictive ability of the Source of Thought with future events and bring that event to waking state, Dr. Gopala could do it. Again, on another sleepless night just before dawn, Dr. Gopala and I reunited. It was a five-day residence course over the holidays. Although he was staying at the retreat house, he was not lecturing.

(21)

The Ninth Siddhi Page 21 He knew immediately what was on my mind and smiled. I was not shy about asking about the predictive ability of the Source of

Thought and how we might go about predicting winning lottery numbers. He confided that although India sponsored a lottery in Punjab in 1968, he did not know a lot about the games. He had never bought a lottery ticket and had no desire to do so.

Nonetheless, I could tell that the idea of gaining significant power and wealth through a yogic technique intrigued him. He confided that he had been thinking about the possibility and was keen on sponsoring a new way of thinking about predicting the future. After all, Dr. Gopala had lectured for years on the yogic powers of invisibility and levitation. Dr. Gopala had no interest in ever actually playing the lottery, but the potential for others who were practicing yoga to acquire wealth and power to be used in ways that could manifest a less violent world captivated his interest.

A warning given by Dr. Gopala

Before moving on to specifics about the lottery prediction process, he gave me a warning. He said that the Siddhis were like side-shows at a circus. They were distractions along the way to the big top tent where the main attractions take place. He said we should not get so involved with the attainment of any of the Siddhis that we forget to strive for spiritual perfection as opposed to riches. Striving for spiritual perfection gives us the grace and balance to manifest love and forgiveness in our lives and in those around us. He said by concentrating on lottery number predictions, we could become distracted from our spiritual pursuits. On the other hand, if practitioners used the wealth and power for unselfish purposes and for the betterment of the community, it may be possible that the system of lottery prediction could improve our sense of well being as well as the sense of well being in those around us. Certainly, the yogic meditation technique is a healthy technique to perform. Studies have shown these techniques reduce stress, improve

(22)

The Ninth Siddhi Page 22 creativity as well as intelligence, and produce a unique state of restful alertness.

Right Action

I believe that the foundation of Dr. Gopala’s interest in the predictive potential of the Source of Thought lies in the yogic

concept of “Right Action.” He loved to discuss the many benefits of meditation practice. Besides those noted throughout this book is the concept that as we consistently contact the Source of Thought in our practice, we will eventually carry forward the experience of the Source of Thought into our everyday life. That is, we will

experience the Source of Thought in the day time along with our conscious thoughts. This experience will bring our mind and daily actions in sync with creation. Every action we take and every thought we have will be supported by all of life. We will be in harmony with the creative intelligence in the universe; the force in the universe that moves life forward. This idea of living in direct harmony with creation is called “Right Action.” Consequently, a practitioner of Dr. Gopala’s winning lottery system is more likely to use wealth and power gained from these techniques in an unselfish way for the benefit of us all.

He related to me that the size of the winnings were so large that all of an individual’s needs could be met with a fraction of the

winnings. What is to be done with the other hundreds of millions? How would creation use this wealth for the benefit of human kind?

The Maharishi Effect

The idea that practitioners of a meditation technique can have a verifiable effect on society is not new. For example, Dr. John Hagelin – an American physicist, three time candidate of the

Natural Law Party for the President of the United States and current leader of the Transcendental Meditation Movement in the United

(23)

The Ninth Siddhi Page 23 States – has presented evidence that groups of meditators can have a measurable effect on society. This phenomenon is called the Maharishi Effect. In the summer of 1993, Dr. Hagelin conducted a large scale study in which 4,000 meditators gathered in the District of Columbia and practiced TM twice daily for eight weeks. During the eight weeks of the study, violent crime (homicides, rapes and assaults) dropped by 23%. Over the last 10 years, the Maharishi Effect has been verified many times in many cities throughout the world. The Maharishi Effect is a result of the “Right Action” attribute of the Source of Thought.

Centers for Developing the Predictive Potential

Dr. Gopala, well aware of the Maharishi Effect, hinted that centers for the practice of developing the predictive potential inherent in the Source of Thought should be established. First, the centers would reduce crime in the cities they were established through the Maharishi Effect. Second, proceeds (lottery winnings) could be used to support the centers as well as educate and teach the benefits of contacting the Source of Thought. If enough centers were

established around the world, violence in the world would be reduced significantly. I believe this is the reason Dr. Gopala revealed this ancient knowledge to us.

CHAPTER 2

“The Curtain rises on the scene With someone shouting to be free

The play unfolds before my eyes There stands the actor who is me The sleeping hours take us far From traffic telephone and fear Put out your problems with the cat

Escape until a bell you hear Our reasons are the same But there’s no one we can blame For there’s nowhere we need go And the only truth we know comes so easily

The sound I have heard in your hello Oh Darling, You’re almost part of me.”

The Actor – Moody Blues

The Bhagavad-Gita

History of the Lost Chord

Today, the Moody Blues sing the praises of transcendence. We live in a time in which knowledge and experience of Transcendental Being is widespread and growing. We live in a time of revival. But,

(25)

The Ninth Siddhi Page 25 it wasn’t always so. Veda Vyasa, a sage of enlightened vision and greatest among the historians of antiquity, recorded the growth of unrighteousness in the ruling families 5000 years ago. Veda knew that when suffering and unrighteousness grows an invisible force of nature moves to correct man’s vision and establish a way of life which again will fulfill the high purpose of mans existence – (the Maharishi Doctrine). It was in this time of turmoil that Lord Krishna came to remind man of the true value of life and the art of living. He restored direct contact with Transcendental Being, which alone gives fullness and abundance to every aspects of life. That is, he made Transcendental Being a basic reality of life. He taught that the experience of Transcendental Being is the foundation for all thinking and consequently the foundation for action in the world. He taught that only through experience of Transcendental Being can man achieve an integrated and full life. This experience not only helps man gain success in his endeavors but also frees him from suffering – the negative forces of life. Such is the eternal truth given by Lord Krishna to Arjuna in the Bhagavad-Gita.

Over the next two thousand years, this teaching faded and was forgotten. The principle idea that Transcendental Being is the Source of Thought, was forgotten. This knowledge and wisdom was overshadowed by misguided beliefs that glorified only the relative aspects of life. “The long lapse of time says Krishna, “is the reason for such a loss of wisdom.”

When Lord Krishna’s philosophy of an integrated life was lost, the philosophy was replaced with the idea that everything life can offer is present on the obvious levels of existence. The new philosophy argued that it would be foolish to aspire to anything that might lay deeper than external experience. Society became dominated by this superficial outlook, insight into Transcendental Being was lost, the correct sense of values forgotten, and the stability of life destroyed.

(26)

The Ninth Siddhi Page 26 As a result, tension, stress, and unhappiness manifested themselves, and unfortunately, the greatest destroyer of the integrated life, fear, prevailed.

So, three thousand years ago, Lord Buddha came to remedy this situation. He taught meditation to purify the field of thought through direct contact with Transcendental Being. Lord Buddha believed that this contact would bring about a state of “Right Action” in society. Later in this chapter, we will see how Maharishi Mahesh Yogi measures “Right Action” produced by a group of meditators as a force of nature bringing about a reduction of violence to cities and communities around the world. Lord

Buddha’s message was complete because, as the Maharishi writes in his translation and commentary on the Bhagavad-Gita, “He

incorporated the fields of Transcendental Being, thinking and doing in his spiritual revival.”

Unfortunately, Buddha’s followers, like those of Lord Krishna, failed to correlate these different fields of Being in a systematic way through the practice of Transcendental Meditation. The realization that direct experience of Being is the basis of a good life was

obscured and lost. According to the Maharishi, the whole structure of Lord Buddha’s teaching not only became distorted but was turned upside down. The effect of contact with Being was mistaken for the cause. “Right Action” came to be regarded as a means to gain Being, whereas “Right Action” is in fact the result of contact with Being. It has been the misfortune of Man that whether the teacher is Krishna, Buddha, or Christ, the teacher speaks from his level of consciousness and the teacher’s followers receive the message on their own level of consciousness and the gulf between teacher and understanding grows wider with time. Consequently, within three or four hundred years all real connection between the essential teaching of Buddha and the daily life of His followers was

(27)

The Ninth Siddhi Page 27 lost. Forgotten was the importance of experiencing Transcendental Being in our daily life, so once again society became immersed in the superficialities of life. Tension, stress, fear, and unrighteousness prevailed.

Again, when suffering and unrighteousness grows an invisible force of nature moves to correct man’s vision and establish a way of life which again fulfills the high purpose of our existence.

Consequently, 1000 years after Buddha or 2000 years ago in the 8th

century, Adi Shankara reestablishes the basis of life on the experience of Transcendental Being. The Maharishi says that Shankara brought the message of fulfillment through direct

experience of Transcendental Being, which is the basis of all that is good in life and that his consciousness exemplified the highest state of human development. Shankara not only brought to the world wisdom of the integrated life, lived through direct experience of Transcendental Being. He also established four principal seats of learning in four corners of India to keep his teaching pure and insure that it would be properly propagated in its entirety

generation after generation. Such was the greatness of Shankara’s vision.

For many centuries his teaching about the value of direct experience of Transcendental Being and an integrated life remained alive and well. But despite all his foresight and endeavors, Shankara’s message inevitably suffered the same misfortune as those of other great teachers. The Maharishi explains that the state of Reality as described by the enlightened man cannot become a path for the seeker, any more than the description of a destination can replace the road that leads to it. When the truth that experience of

Transcendental Being forms the basis of an enlightened mind became obscured, Shankara’s descriptions about the nature of the goal were mistaken for the path to realization.

(28)

The Ninth Siddhi Page 28 And it gets worse, as the truth of Transcendental Being began to disappear from view, teachers came to teach without upholding the principle that it is only through direct contact with Being, that an integrated life can be developed. People followed these teachers and many devotional sects were formed throughout India and the world. The foundation of these sects were grounded in the hope that, “someday our prayer will be heard.” Since these sects operated on the surface level of consciousness - aptly described as mood-making - knowledge of Transcendental Being was lost. Seekers were led astray, and lovers of the Divine remained weeping without finding love or prosperity.

Our current time has been fortunate. It has witnessed a living example of a man inspired by eastern wisdom in its wholeness a man able to revive the teaching of the Bhagavad-Gita. In 1965, the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, in his commentary on the Bhagavad-Gita, again brought the message of the integrated life to seekers around the world. He teaches the essence of the Gita - that the unity of life and consciousness cannot be significant until one has thoroughly understood, by direct experience, that one’s inner divine nature is separate from the world of action. That direct experience of

Transcendental Being brings about individual fulfillment in life and this can be accomplished through the technique of Transcendental Meditation. In his teachings, the Maharishi revives the

understanding that only through direct contact of Transcendental Being can an individual begin to live an integrated lie. In addition to these facts, he describes a meditation technique to attain this

experience.

In 1958, the Maharishi established the world-wide Spiritual Regeneration Movement in India. Since then the principles of an integrated life have been taught the world over. The current

(29)

The Ninth Siddhi Page 29 movement has over several million participants experiencing

Transcendental Being daily. The global organization consists of approximately 1,000 TM centers. Currently, there are many TM-centered communities around the world. Today, millions of people meditate daily experiencing Transcendental Being. In the coming chapters, we will come to understand the consequences of so many people experiencing Transcendental Being in our lifetime.

In our attempt to follow the revivals of Transcendental Being through history, we did not mean to leave out of the discussion the Jewish or Christian traditions. So much needs to be said about Being and the Kabbalah/Torah and the revival of Being in the New Christian Gospels, we gave each its own chapter. Never before has direct experience of Transcendental Being been taught to so many from both an eastern perspective and a western perspective. Never before in Man’s history has such an abundance of Transcendental Being flooded the soul of humanity in one lifetime. Later chapters will show the profound consequences of this timely occurrence and its effect on the Ninth Siddhi.

What is Being

Before discussing how Transcendental Meditation is used to directly experience Transcendental Being, we need to understand the

essential nature of Being itself. According to Maharishi and the New Christian Gospels discussed in a later chapter, Being is Life, It is existence. Meditative experience shows that Being is the source of all thinking, the Source of Thought, and moreover, the source of all existing creation. Being lies outside of relative existence where the experiencer is left awake by itself in full awareness of itself without the experience of an object to perceive. In other words, Being is exclusive of perception. The waking mind reaches the state of pure consciousness or pure awareness. It is the source of all natural law that maintains and pushes creation forward. It is the source of all

(30)

The Ninth Siddhi Page 30 personal power, abundance and wealth. It is the source of power used in the practice of the Ninth Siddhi.

For those readers who have not had the experience of

Transcendental Being, the above paragraph is extremely difficult to understand to say the least. Think of it like this, say you are at the movie theater and just before the movie starts the bright light of the projector shines through the first few frames of the film. Sometimes the projectionist uses these blank frames to get the film started in the projector. Nonetheless, a very bright light appears on the screen. You are very aware of the bright light and marvel at its brightness. Then the movie starts. Now, the bright light changes to something familiar to ones perceiving mind, into something familiar to the senses. A little bit further into the movie you become

emotionally involved and may be brought to tears, sometimes to laughter. Inevitably, you forget about the bright light that is the underlying basis of the sight and sound you are experiencing. As a matter of fact, once the movie starts, no amount of trying will let you view the screen as the bright light.

The action in the movie is the way we experience objects of

perception. That is, the way we experience the world through sight, sound, touch, smell and taste. But, in addition, the movie caused us to create thoughts and those thoughts created feelings in us. We experienced the movie as we experience life, through our senses, thoughts, and feelings. Being is like the bright light before the movie starts. It is always present, albeit invisible to the senses. Clearly, the bright light like Being supports the action in the movie as Being supports our thoughts and actions. Being is life as the bright light of the projector is the movie. When we say that Being is transcendental to our thoughts and actions we mean that it is beyond our ability to perceive it through our senses or thoughts. But unlike the bright light of the movie theater, we can experience

(31)

The Ninth Siddhi Page 31 Being through meditative practice. The experience of Being, as you might expect, is one of pure awareness. Imagine the bright light of the projector as having the capacity to manifest a movie as Being manifests life. As the bright light on the screen supports all aspects of the movie, Being likewise supports all aspects of life and creation. As the bright light is the foundation for a movie, Being is the

foundation of life. When we say Being is outside relative existence, we mean it isn’t an object of perception, thought, or feeling. When we say Being is absolute, we mean like the bright light of the movie projector, it is non-changing. It may manifest a movie, as being manifests life, but it remains unchanged in its essential nature. When we say Being is unbound by time and space, we mean that its nature is non-changing, absolute, and outside the relative sphere of existence.

However, Being has energy. As the bright light of the movie screen is reflected back to our eyes as light energy, Being manifests

creation and our lives through an energy source called Prana. Prana is the tendency of the field of Being to manifest and create. In the Christian tradition, this energy force is called the Blood of Christ. In China it is called Chi. In later chapters, we will see how this energy source called “Dark Energy” by scientists, is measured and

observed. It is called Dark by scientists because it is invisible to our senses. We use this energy source in the Ninth Siddhi to manifest or predict lottery numbers from the lottery number sequence.

One of the premises of this book is that as we gain knowledge and begin to experience Transcendental Being, we gain an advantage from that knowledge and grow in our understanding about life. Our life becomes more comprehensive, more powerful, more useful, and expansively more creative in our aspirations. We also increase our ability to perform the various Siddhis.

How to experience Transcendental Being

The Bhagavad-Gita, Kabbalah/Torah, and the New Christian Gospels not only postulate that contact with Transcendental Being is necessary for an integrated life but, in addition, all offer a

systematic way to have a direct experience of the essential nature of Transcendental Being. In this section we will describe the technique given in the Bhagavad-Gita. In later chapters, we will discuss the techniques offered in the Kabbalah and the New Christian Gospels. We use this technique to get close to the Source of Thought where we set an energized intention to predict a lottery number.

We have seen that Being lies outside our senses in the transcendental field of existence. In order to experience this transcendental reality, it is necessary that our attention be led in a systematic and concrete manner through all the levels of the mind to the very Source of Thought. When we arrive at the subtlest level of our mind, we transcend relative experience and experience Transcendental Being or pure awareness.

Put another way, we know that our ability to perceive objects are limited by our senses. Clearly, we never experience everything in the gross field of life. For example, we do not see everything that there is to see. We only see a small spectrum of visible light when so much more could be perceived, such as x-rays and infrared light. We do not hear all that could be heard. Many high frequencies heard by animals are not heard by us. And, bloodhounds are notorious for their sense of smell. My point is that even in the gross field of life we do not experience all that we could. We could

experience more if our senses were more profound. Thus, our senses only offer us a partial view of Reality.

All experience brought to our attention through the senses and all the resulting thoughts and feelings are part of the relative sphere of

(33)

The Ninth Siddhi Page 33 the mind. In order to go beyond the relative field of the mind, we must experience subtler and subtler levels of thought until we transcend the relative sphere of the mind.

So, how exactly do we do this? Experience shows that the process of thinking starts at the deepest, most refined level of consciousness and becomes grosser as it develops. Eventually, it becomes gross enough to be perceived on the surface level of the mind. Imagine the mind as an ocean, the surface layers are active with waves, but the deeper layers are silent. A thought starts at the deepest level of consciousness, travels through the whole depth of the ocean of mind, and finally appears as a conscious thought on the surface. We only become aware of thoughts after they have come to the surface. But, there is much thought we are not aware of and these thought fragments are not appreciated. If there was a way to consciously appreciate all the states of the thought prior to the thought reaching the surface level, then this approach would lead us consciously to the subtlest level of thought and to transcendence.

In Transcendental Meditation, the mind is trained to experience thought at an earlier and earlier stage of development. When the Source of Thought is reached, we transcend. In this way, the Source of Thought or Transcendental Being is experienced by the conscious mind. That is, when mind transcends the subtlest state of thought, the conscious mind transcends the subtlest state of relative

experience and arrives at the state of Transcendental Being, the state of pure awareness.

But, what makes the mind choose to go to subtler and subtler states of thought? How do we begin this process? The Maharishi says it is because the nature of Transcendental Being is Bliss Consciousness, and the mind will gravitate to that which is most attractive: love and peace. The mind is charmed by Bliss and led to the experience

(34)

The Ninth Siddhi Page 34 of Transcendental Being. However, some thoughts are more

conducive to moving the mind towards Bliss. So the teachers of Transcendental Meditation provide the meditator with a proper thought, sound, or Mantra that helps the mind move toward transcendence.

According to the Maharishi, “A proper thought [sound or Mantra] means a thought whose nature is harmonious and useful to the thinker and his surroundings. Every thought as every spoken word has some influence on the thinker and his surroundings. Just as a stone thrown into a pond produces waves that reach all the extremities of the pond, any thought, word or action produces waves in the atmosphere and these waves travel in all directions and strike against everything in the atmosphere. They produce some influence in every level of creation. The whole universe is influenced by every thought, word and action of every individual.” When such a wide range of influence of the thought [sound or Mantra] exists, one needs to be very particular about the quality of thought [Mantra] one creates in his mind in order to experience Transcendental Being. So, for the sake of facilitating the finding of the proper Mantra for each individual, the Maharishi trained certain individuals as teachers in the art of selecting a proper thought, sound, or Mantra to correspond to the special qualities of the individual. These trained teachers of meditation are found in almost every country and in thousands of centers of the Spiritual Regeneration Movement around the world.

The Maharishi continues his dialog in The Science of Being and the Art

of Living explaining, “By necessity, the practice of Transcendental

Meditation is verbal; it is imparted by personal instruction. It cannot be imparted through a book because it not only involves telling an aspirant how to experience the subtle states of thinking,

(35)

The Ninth Siddhi Page 35 but an even greater responsibility lies in finding out what the

aspirant experiences when he proceeds on that path” So, we experience Transcendental Being by practicing

Transcendental Meditation. In this technique, a Mantra is used to experience subtler and subtler thoughts until the most subtle state of thought is transcended and pure awareness is experienced. The mind is drawn to Transcendental Being because its very nature is bliss, love, and peace. The Mantra is used to facilitate the natural movement of mind towards bliss. However, each individual needs a Mantra unique to him/her. This necessity means that the

technique must be taught verbally by an instructor trained in selecting a proper Mantra for the seeker.

Seven States of Consciousness

The experience of Transcendental Being as pure awareness during meditation is a small first step on the path toward a fully integrated life. In Chapter two of the Bhagavad-Gita, pure awareness as the fourth state of consciousness is described. The first three states of consciousness are waking state, dream state, and deep sleep. Pure awareness is said to be a small step because it is the basis for more advanced states of consciousness.

By repeatedly experiencing pure awareness twice a day for some time, the seeker begins to experience pure awareness not only during meditation but also simultaneously with waking state, dream state, and deep sleep. Once a seeker maintains pure

awareness and activity at the same time he/she is said to be living in a duality or a fifth state of consciousness called Cosmic

Consciousness.

Think of it like this. When a person wishes to color cloth she dips the cloth into dye. When the cloth is removed from the dye it is

(36)

The Ninth Siddhi Page 36 hung in the sun to set. But, the sun and wind fade the color. So, the next day the process is repeated until the color is maintained in its brilliance and does not fade when brought into the light of day. The same is true of pure awareness. The meditator dips herself into Transcendental Being and experiences pure Awareness. When she completes her meditation, the experience of Being fades a bit when brought into activity. However, with a twice a day practice more and more Being is maintained and eventually she is able to maintain pure awareness while also involved in activity. In this way she lives a life full of Being in the state of Cosmic Consciousness.

A life lived in the state of Cosmic Consciousness is said to be a life lived in a state of duality, because both the ego and Being are experienced simultaneously. A strong loving and forgiving ego maintains its identity and Being is experienced as a silent witness. Through devotion and practice this duality dissolves into a sixth state of consciousness known as Divine Consciousness. It is described in the Bhagavad-Gita as a state where all personal

experience is divinely inspired. Finally, in Unity Consciousness the seventh state of consciousness, man is truly inspired by the will of Being as the world at large, all of creation, is experienced as divinely inspired.

To practice the Ninth Siddhi, we do not need to advance to the greatness of the advanced states of consciousness. We do not even need to experience Being as pure awareness to develop predictive ability. But it is necessary to understand the greatness of the teaching, the fullness of the heritage, and the affinity for divinity that this practice entails.

The Physiology of Consciousness

As the technique to experience Being exploded into our field of awareness across the globe, scientists were quick to pick up on the

(37)

The Ninth Siddhi Page 37 phenomena and test the claims. They wondered if these subjective experiences could be verified in the laboratory. Could

transcendence be quantified? Could higher states of consciousness be verified by science?

Scientists tested meditators to see if there was a link between

changes in the body and transcendence. The scientific literature that has been created on this topic is too numerous to mention in this short book. In my opinion, one of the most renowned researchers is Dr. Robert Keith Wallace. He wrote The Physiology of

Consciousness. In his book, Dr. Wallace list hundreds of studies

supporting the idea that changes occur in the body and mind when one experiences Transcendental Being on a regular basis. One interesting study found that there are different physiological

patterns of transcending for different individuals. For example, one study looked at the frequency of breath suspension in

Transcendental Meditation. Almost all meditators report this happening when one gets close to transcendence or is experiencing Transcendental Being. It seems there is a slowing or cessation of breathing for a short period of time. Objective measurements of this experience do in fact show respiratory suspension for as much as one minute in about one-third of the subjects, according to Dr. Wallace. When these subjects are compared to those just resting with their eyes closed, no such cessation is found. Further, when the meditators are asked to press a button after having transcended, an extremely large percentage of the buttons are pressed just after breath suspension. So, for these subjects, periods of breath

suspension can, in fact, be used as reliable physiological markers for the experience of Transcendental Being. These types of studies show that transcendence causes both decreased sensitivity to increased levels of carbon dioxide and an increased sensitivity to low levels of oxygen. This suggests that a refined pattern of brain functioning specific to specific areas of the brain occurs during

(38)

The Ninth Siddhi Page 38 meditation. Dr. Wallace also suggests that the machinery and patterns of transcending are part of our genetic endowment of the human nervous system. Whether or not we use it, transcending is an inherent ability.

Of course, any discussion of the physiology of transcendence would not be complete without discussing EEG studies. When I was doing research for this book, I looked at a plethora of studies discussing the affect that Transcendental Meditation has on the brain. It seems as if, over the last 40 years, hundreds if not thousands of

experiments have been completed measuring patterns of brain wave activity of meditating subjects. In the studies performed by Dr. Robert Keith Wallace, he found that the Transcendental Meditation technique demonstrated increased activity of two types of EEG wave patterns: alpha waves, which have a frequency of about 8 -10 cycles per second, and theta waves, at around 5-7 cycles per second. The result of all these EEG studies over the last 40 years, have

documented the emergence of four distinct EEG patterns during Transcendental Meditation. First, an increase in theta waves in the frontal areas of the brain. Second, the studies show an increase in slow alpha waves also in the frontal area. Third, Dr. Wallace documented an increase in frontal theta and slow alpha waves, and lastly, an increase in beta wave activity. Dr. Wallace and others suggest that these patterns are indicative of stages of transcending. To scientists these findings are momentous because they give a scientific basis for transcendence and the experience of

Transcendental Being.

More recently, one of the most important and useful developments in EEG research on Transcendental Meditation has come through the application of a new measurement, EEG coherence. According to Dr. Wallace, EEG coherence measures the orderliness of the

(39)

The Ninth Siddhi Page 39 electrical activity of the brain and helps answer the question, “Is the activity of one area of the brain correlated with the activity of another?” These recent studies clearly show an increase in alpha coherence during Transcendental Meditation as well as theta and beta frequencies. More importantly, in long term meditators, continuously strong coherence was found in all frequencies both during meditation as well as when the meditator was involved in activity. This finding gives credence to the idea that repeated experiences of Transcendental Being brings about advanced states of consciousness. Remember the dye metaphor about dipping a cloth in dye repeatedly to set the color in the previous section on advanced states of consciousness. This research finds that brain wave coherence is found even after the meditator has stopped meditating. This is scientific proof that over time the brain

maintains the experience of Transcendental Being after mediating. A little Transcendental Being is brought into our life and stays with us. If Transcendental Being is maintained during activity this is called Cosmic Consciousness, an advanced state of consciousness. Maintaining brain wave coherence even after we stop meditating is an indication that the nervous system is changing, moving toward an integrated and full life. These results form a principle for the practice of the Ninth Siddhi. That is, the more we practice the Ninth Siddhi, the more power and energy we bring to the task of

predicting/manifesting a winning number.

In addition, scientists have recently discovered that continued brave wave coherence has a chemical effect on the body. In The Physiology

of Consciousness, Dr. Wallace and others found that during and after

meditation the stress hormone, cortisol, decreases. They also reported an increased level of the amino acid, phenylalanine, which suggests changes in key brain neurotransmitters. They also

investigated a pituitary hormone ADH. This hormone is associated with improved memory. All meditators were found to have

(40)

The Ninth Siddhi Page 40 unusually high levels of this hormone substantiating other findings that the experience of Transcendental Being improves memory and recall.

Today the search for the biomedical basis of transcendence continues. It is part of an attempt by scientists to uncover the biochemical basis of higher states of consciousness. I believe that the greatest value in this research is that it will establish a bridge between the physiology of consciousness and the current world view held by scientists. Already, transcendence, which powers the practice of the Ninth Siddhi, is not a subjective claim by mystics but a verifiable scientific fact.

The Maharishi Effect

Physical effects of continuous contact with Transcendental Being are well established in the scientific community. Could these effects, particularly brain wave coherence, have an effect on others? For many years, those close to the Maharishi stated that he believed that when a critical group of meditators meditated together they

stimulated Transcendent Being, the underlying field of pure

consciousness and created a field effect of coherence. And, that this field effect had a marked influence not only on the group of

meditators but in the localized society. This influence on society has come to be known as the Maharishi Effect. And, more importantly, this field effect could be measured through various social indices that characterize the quality of life in society, such as the reduction of violent crime in a city.

The Maharishi explained this phenomenon in these words, “The field of pure consciousness is a non-localized field of infinite correlation. Thus, an impulse anywhere is an impulse everywhere. Since the collective consciousness is shared by all, one individual transcending the surface level of excitation to this universal level of

(41)

The Ninth Siddhi Page 41 natural law can generate an influence of coherence and orderliness in the whole society and the environment.”

According to Robert Oates in The Maharishi Effect, written in 1985, and Dr. Keith Wallace writing in The Neurophysiology of

Enlightenment, the first experimental evidence for this phenomenon

arose in 1974. In this study, scientists observed 11 cities in the United States with populations over 10,000 in which 1% of the population was practicing Transcendental Meditation. They then looked at one major index of the quality of life in these cities, the crime rate, and compared it to the crime rate of 11 other cites

matched by population and geographic location. From 1967 to 1972 the crime rate was increasing in all the cities. The cities with over 1% Transcendental Meditation participation showed a decrease in crime of 8.2% from 1972 to 1973 as compared to the year before. Other scientist replicated these findings. In one study scientists examined 160 cities over a 14 year period (1964 to 1978) to

determine the long term effects on crime rate in “one-percent cities.” This study and many others verified the reduction of violent crimes when 1% of a city’s population experienced Transcendental Being regularly.

One particularly compelling study on the Maharishi Effect occurred in Lebanon in a small village named Baskninta. The Transcendental Meditation technique was taught to over 1% of the population in this village which had seen armed conflict for many years. In abrupt contrast to previous history, there was a complete cessation of hostility in Baskninta once 1% of the population began practicing Transcendental Meditation. The increase in love and harmony was measured by a decrease in the number of incoming artillery shells, property damage, and human casualties. See Roberts Oates Book

(42)

The Ninth Siddhi Page 42 titled The Maharishi Effect for details on many more studies and real world examples of the Maharishi Effect in action.

But, why should this field effect occur. What is it about the

experience of Transcendental Being that produces these startling but wonderful results? Many scientists believe that when we meditate, a field much like electromagnetic radiation is produced. But unlike electromagnetic radiation this field is developed with a force that is more refined, more akin to light than magnetism. That is, when an individual experiences Transcendental Being, a kind of halo effect is generated. The rationale for this prediction came from discussions with leading physicists concerning coherent effects seen in physical systems, particularly the laser.

Normal light is emitted in direct proportion to the number of atoms in the light source. When the atoms in a laser are in perfect

coherence with each other, a new type of collective behavior

emerges characterized by intense orderliness. The individual atoms cease to act independently and begin to behave as one complete coherent system. As a result, the light emitted by the laser is

significantly stronger than normal light. It is through coherence that the individual atoms receive their power. The power of light

coherence is tremendous. It is powerful enough to burn through steel or to shine a laser beam on the moon. Scientists have found that the intensity of light emitted by a laser of X atoms is magnified enormously to X². If 100 atoms are perfectly in phase or coherent, they will radiate with the intensity of 100² or 10,000 times that of a single atom. This phenomenon is physics is known as Super Radiance.

Similarly, it is thought that when groups of meditators meditate and experience Transcendental Being a super radiance effect is

generated. This field of super radiance is significantly more powerful than that experienced by an individual meditator. This

(43)

The Ninth Siddhi Page 43 super radiance quality of Transcendental Being can be felt by

society at large if the number of meditators is large enough.

Consequently, scientists began to do research in this area. The focus of the research was to see if the field effect of consciousness

stimulated by a group of meditators could affect the EEG coherence between subjects at a large distance. Indeed, the study showed this to be the case. Many other studies too have followed and confirmed the idea that Transcendental Being has a halo or Super Radiance Effect.

This is an important discovery because it offers a basis for all the Siddhis. When we begin to discuss the importance of

Transcendental Being to the Ninth Siddhi, we will use many of these field effect ideas to confirm our natural ability to

predict/manifest future events such as a lottery number.

The World Peace Project

If at least 1% of a city’s population is meditating and experiencing Transcendental Being daily reducing violence in the city, how many meditators would it take to bring about a reduction of violence in the world? In other words, is world peace possible through the super radiance effect generated through Transcendental

Meditation? The Maharishi believes that it is possible.

In July 1986, the Maharishi unveiled his program to create world peace, which includes a strong initiative to create large groups of meditators on every continent and in every nation. It is believed by the Maharishi and scientists that if a large enough group of

meditators could be taught to meditate, peace could be brought to the world through the Global Maharishi Effect. The Maharishi set fourth his criteria for world peace; “(1) friendship between the super powers, (2) a cease fire in the Iran-Iraq war, (3) improved international relations, and (4) an end to terrorism.” To date much

(44)

The Ninth Siddhi Page 44 progress has been made toward these goals but more meditators need to be taught in different parts of the world to create lasting world peace. By practicing the Ninth Siddhi, we hope to play a part in this global effort.

In the Maharishi’s effort to create world peace, The Spiritual Regeneration Movement tried to maintain thousands of meditators around the world in hotels for extended periods of time. Sometimes meditators stayed on one location for as long as four months, in groups ranging from 30 to 400. Eventually, financing became an issue. Dr. Wallace reported, “…the financial burden of continuing this project became a burden. The various groups in Iran, Rhodesia, Nicaragua, and other countries were forced to pull out.”

The practice of the Ninth Siddhi will bring an integrated life as well as an abundance of wealth and prosperity to its practitioners. This wealth and abundance must be used in part to fund world peace. This will occur through the concept of “right action.” As a matter of fact, one of the reasons for the development of a new Siddhi by Dr. Gopala was for the establishment of meditation centers around the world. Through the

Global Maharishi Effect, global peace will be manifested.

The Ninth Siddhi

As said earlier, the Sanskrit term Siddhi means “power or

perfection.” Each Siddhi technique is a method to develop optimal functioning (power) in some specific function of the mind.

Originally, these yogic powers were described and taught by the great sage Patanjali, in Vedic literature called the Yog Sutras. In this
