1 GRADE VI

FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS

Have you been lost or confused because someone gave you poor

directions or because you were not really listening? Most of us had

these experiences. They make us realize why it is important to know

how to follow directions.

Directions are concise, direct to the point. They use precise and

carefully chosen words to communicate meaning. They are given in

oral or written form.

When you were in Grade V you studied following 5 to 6 steps

printed directions and filling out forms.

This module will strengthen your skills in following directions. It

will include following series of directions using prescriptions, cooking

recipes, experiments and interpreting a diagram/road map and other

situations.

Write your answers in your notebook when you do the

exercises.

A. Noemi is celebrating her eighteenth birthday. She has been very busy with the preparation for almost a month now. Unfortunately, she had flu a week before the celebration. She went to the doctor and was prescribed medicine. Here is a sample of a doctor’s prescription for a patient with flu. Read it carefully then answer the questions that follow.

Do this in your notebook.

1. How many ml of the prescribed medicine will you drink if you are 10 years old?

2. How many times a day will you take your medicine if you are 6 years old?

3. If you are 12 years old how many tablespoonful of medicine will you take?

4. Where are you going to put the medicine?

5. What will happen if you were not able to follow the prescription? 6. How many weeks are you going to take the medicine?

7. If symptoms persist, what are you going to do?

1 month to 1 year old 5 ml or 1 teaspoonful 3x a day 2 – 4 years old 1 ml or 2 teaspoonful 3x a day 5 – 7 years old 2 ml or 1 tablespoonful 3x a day 8 – 12 years old 4 ml to 2 tablespoonful 3x a day

• Take the medicine 3x a day for one week. • Place in a cool area

8. If a one month old baby has flu, how many teaspoonful of medicine will the baby take?

9. Baby is 4 years old and has flu, what will her mother do? 10. Is it good to take medicine without seeing a doctor first?

A. Read the simple paragraph and study the recipe below.

1. Marinate the chicken pieces with soy sauce, vinegar and pepper.

2. Saute the marinated chicken with garlic and onion.

3. Pour 1/

2 cup of vinegar and

water. Add the bay leaf. Boil for 10 minutes.

4. Simmer for the next 15 minutes.

5. Serve hot.

10. If you’re going to celebrate on your birthday would you like to prepare your own food? Why or why not?

I hope you did well. Try cooking adobo at home.

B. Are sounds transmitted only through air? Let us try this experiment.

You will need

• a wrist watch (not digital) • a table

What to do:

1. Hold the watch to your ear and listen to the ticking. Then gradually move it away until you can no longer hear the sound.

What happens!

The ticking of the watch is distinctly heard by the ear because sounds are better transmitted through solids than through air. Sounds also travel easily through bricks and glass. That is why sounds can be heard through walls and windows.

REMEMBER:

In giving directions, remember the following pointers.

1. Know your subject thoroughly.

2. Tell all the important things that need to be done. 3. Tell each step in its proper order.

4. Use words that tell exactly what you mean. Avoid unnecessary words.

Method

1. Put all the ingredients into a mixing bowl. 2. Pour in the salad cream and mix well. 3. Arrange the lettuce leaves in a salad bowl.

4. Placed the mixed vegetable salad on the lettuce leaves. 5. Sprinkle the raisins on top and serve.
