SACRED HEAT: Parishioners continue to provide financial support in an incredibly generous fashion. We are operating at a deficit. However, this deficit is nowhere near as substantial as was feared just one year ago. Because of substantial, financial reserves, we can endure deficit spending, at this level, for the balance of the fiscal year. Obviously, this assertion is predicated on an expectation that parishioners will continue to provide financial support at current levels.

ASCENSION: Again, regular offertory remains much higher than anticipated. We are operating at a deficit. While this deficit will not spell financial ruin, it can’t be endured for long. Financial reserves are such as to permit us to continue operating in the short-term. But long-term, we need to grow income or cut expense.

ASH WEDNESDAY

Although not a Holy day of Obligation, many Catholics could not imagine entering into the Lenten Season without coming to church this day. The very simple ritual of being signed with ashes is a powerful witness both for us and for others: “I am a sinner.” “I stand in need of repentance and forgiveness.” “Over the 40 Days of this Lenten journey I will take up the work of reforming my life.” “I need your prayers.”

Obviously, there’s no magical power associated with these ashes. The real power is found in the invitation provided by this sign. As with all good intentions, often we just need a little encouragement to start moving in a new direction. On Ash Wednesday, we hear the Lord’s invitation: “Come, and follow me.”

Those who are not able to physically join with us at Mass may join us by Livestream at 7 pm.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS

One of the most popular Lenten devotions is the Way of the Cross. Spiritually, we journey with the Lord, through his passion, and crucifixion. We do this because we understand there is no other path that can bring us to resurrected life. We do this because we understand that this journey was not only made by the Lord. But rather, through the course of our own life, it is a journey that we all must undertake.

In our parishes, the Stations will be prayed on Fridays of Lent at Noon in Ascension Church and at 4 pm in St. Barbara Church. Those who wish to virtually join will find a video link on the St. Barbara website.

FASTING

Some of us, no doubt remember those days when Fasting wasn’t simply for Lent. Back in the day, there was a form of fasting practiced every Friday. Every Catholic was obliged to abstain from eating meat. It was a discipline observed with the utmost care.

When this practice was changed, along with many other revisions of the Second Vatican Council, nearly everyone heard the news that: “You don’t have to abstain from meat on Friday’s.” However, nearly no one heard the next part: “But, you do need to take upon yourself some other penitential practice.”

The revision of this discipline was not intended to make life easier. It was intended to treat Catholics as mature adults. The Church can’t always best know the disciplines that will be most effective in changing our lives. Each of us has a responsibility to consider the actions that will best form us into the people we are called to be. Perhaps this is the Lent that invites all of us to grow. The discipline of meatless Friday’s will disappear after Good Friday. In the meantime, it’s a good way to work on our discipline.

HOME MISSIONS APPEAL

Forty percent, or over 80 of the dioceses in the United States are considered to be “home mission dioceses.” They receive this designation because of their struggles with severe priest shortages, overwhelming poverty, high unemployment, geographical challenges, religious hostility, and other burdens that make it difficult to practice the Catholic faith. Without the help of others, these home mission dioceses cannot provide for many of the basic pastoral services that we take for granted. Our diocese is blessed to be able to help.

Every year, on the First Sunday of Lent, the Diocese of Greensburg conducts the Catholic Home Missions Appeal for these needy dioceses throughout the United States. The theme for this year’s collection continues to be, “Strengthening the Church at Home.” This collection provides for ministries and programs such as the celebration of the Mass and the Sacraments; religious education for children, teenagers and adult parishioners; catechesis for those wanting to join the Catholic Church; formation for seminarians and permanent deacon candidates; and the ongoing development of the clergy, women and men religious, and lay leaders. This collection also helps to fund the promotion of a greater respect for life, efforts to strengthen marriages and families, and evangelization outreaches to those with little or no faith.

Please join with me in praying for the Catholic leadership, people and ministries of the home mission dioceses burdened with so many challenges. We stand in solidarity with them. Please join with me in lending your financial support to the second collection that will be taken up next weekend.

Every fiscal quarter we provide a summary of our financial picture. Evaluating the numbers leads me to a “Tale of Three Cities.” I wish to offer a unified analysis of the financial health of our parishes. However, the particular circumstances of each parish require a more specific analysis. Please see the quarterly figures, and my notes, for each parish throughout this bulletin.

SYMBOLISM DURING LENT

D

uring the season of Lent, we will explore the symbols that are a part of the Lenten Journey. Each week, we will use the scriptures as our basis for the symbols chosen and reveal their meaning. This will give a deeper meaning to the scriptures that we hear each week.

The Lenten season begins this Wednesday, February 17 with Ash Wednesday. The symbol for this day is ASHES. The ashes symbolize both death and repentance. In our readings from the book of Joel and the gospel of Matthew, the concepts of morality, sorrow and penance are seen throughout. There is an acknowledgement of sinfulness, our need for God and for conversion of the heart. We must repent and turn away from sin and evil.

May we offer a suggestion this Lent? If you are a fan of Podcasts or have access to Sirius XM radio then spend 40 days with the Busted Halo Show with Father Dave Dwyer. You just might be surprised at what you learn along the way. Visit bustedhalo.com/radio for more details, search Busted Halo Show anywhere you listen to podcasts or tune to Channel 129 6-8PM Eastern on Sirius XM.

NCYC 101 FOR THE ROOKIE

Spots are filling up for the 2021 National Catholic Youth Conference, aka, NCYC. The good news is we still have room for you on this pilgrim-age of faith. This could be the year you take a journey of faith you won’t regret. We

could all use a faith boost - am I right? If you are a teen or parent that has questions about NCYC or are simply curious about what happens at this national youth conference, perhaps a Zoom session with Elisa could help answers your questions or ease your

uncertainties. Interested? Email Elisa to set something up or reach out to her in the Parish Office.

A baptism seminar will be held on Monday, March 29 beginning at 6:30 pm via Zoom. All first-time parents are asked to participate in a seminar prior to the baptism. Call or email Joan Duncan at 724-744-7474 or [email protected] prior to the session. A valid email address will be needed.

The children who are preparing for the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Eucharist will be receiving the sacrament of Reconciliation beginning Feb 23. Please keep these children and their families in your prayers as they receive the healing grace of the sacrament for the first time.

Regular offertory has trended much higher than anticipated. Coupled with reductions in spending, we are at a much healthier place than was feared a few months ago. With the (potential) recovery of some fundraising income, it’s possible that we could end the fiscal year with a balanced budget. This is a testimonial to the generosity and the stewardship of our community.

KENTUCKY PROJECT

LENT COULD BE CALLED A RETREAT

FOR THE WHOLE CHURCH

It is a time of much reflection: on our personal response to the Lord’s call to discipleship (which we have heard in the Sunday Gospel since Christmas time); on our response as a community of believers to the needs of our brothers and sisters; on our acceptance or non-acceptance of the call to continuing conversion; and for the elect, a serious reflection on their intent to celebrate the Sacraments of Initiation during the Easter Vigil. These are retreat-like activities. Taken sincerely into our hearts and expressed in our actions, they will give us a contrite heart and a renewed spirit, ready to exalt in the joy and grace of the Resurrection.

CONGRATULATIONS

to

Prayer for Married Couples

Almighty and eternal God, You blessed the union of married couples so that they might reflect the union of

Christ with his Church: look with kindness on them. Renew their marriage covenant, increase your love in them, and strengthen their bond of peace so that, with their children, they may always rejoice in the gift of

your blessing.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

WALKING WITH MOMS IN NEED DURING

THE YEAR OF ST. JOSEPH

Beginning March 6 and continuing until March 19, the Feast of St. Joseph, the Jeannette parishes of Ascension and Sacred Heart will be collecting disposable diapers (sizes newborn – 6) wipes, onesies (short or long sleeve), baby toiletries, crib sheets, sleepers and clothing (sizes newborn to 24 months/2T). Donations will be accepted at Ascension Church.

On March 19 all contributions will be taken to the St. Vincent de Paul store in Jeannette for distribution to area families in need. (If you are unable to get out and would like to contribute, checks can be written out to the “St. Vincent de Paul Store” and dropped in the collection basket or mailed to the Parish Office.)

Marking the 150th anniversary of Blessed Pope Pius IX’s declaration of St. Joseph as Patron of the Universal Church, Pope Francis has proclaimed a special “Year of St. Joseph.” This special year began on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception 2020 and will extend to the same feast in 2021.

In his Apostolic Letter entitled, Patris corde (“With a Father’s Heart”), Pope Francis highlights “the creative courage” of St. Joseph, which “emerges especially in the way we deal with difficulties.” “The carpenter of Nazareth,” explains the Pope, was able to turn a problem into a possibility by trusting in divine providence.”

Right now in our area due to the coronavirus and its negative effect on employment, the needs of young families have never been greater. Let us look to St. Joseph as our guide during these difficult times and do our part to serve those in need, especially moms and dads caring for the most vulnerable.

In his encyclical, Evangelium Vitae (The Gospel of Life), Saint Pope John Paul II challenges all followers of Christ to be caretakers of all human life. The Year of St. Joseph certainly provides us this opportunity to answer that challenge in conjunction with the program that the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Committee on Pro-Life Activities has launched entitled, Walking with Moms in Need: A Year of Service.

Thank you for your gift of generosity and service during these challenging times. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Deacon Bill Newhouse via phone at 724-523-2560, ext. 12.
