Arxceo Japan Inc. (a subsidiary of JCI) to release ʺPersonal IPSʺ, an embedded Intrusion Prevention System for PC users
JCI’s subsidiary, Arxceo Japan Inc. (HQ: Shinagawa, Tokyo; CEO: Masataka Fujisawa), will
commence sales of its network intrusion prevention system for PC users, Personal IPS, in
October 2006. This product will have an open price (anticipated market price is around
¥160,000).
Network Intrusion Prevention Systems (hereafter IPS) have, until now, been placed inside
corporate networks to protect against attacks to which anti‐virus software and firewalls alone are
not sufficient. While Internet use has become widespread, thanks in part to the spread of
broadband to the home, until now there has been no established method of protecting PCs from
Internet attacks while they were outside the corporate network.
Personal IPS, an IPS specifically designed to protect the PC itself, uses an embedded version of
the compact IPS developed by Arxceo Corporation (a JCI subsidiary, HQ: Alabama, USA;
hereafter “Arxceo”). Arxceo Corp’s IPS has been highly rated by, among others*, SC Magazine,
an information security magazine based in the US – the world’s most advanced Internet Security
market. Personal IPS is the newest member of Arxceo Japan’s Anshin INTERNET family of
products that employ Arxceo’s IPS technology.
This product uses the Personal IPS card as a key and, provided the key is plugged in, is designed
to function as an always‐on IPS.
Special set‐up is entirely unnecessary. The user needs only to install the software in the PC and
insert their Personal IPS card to enjoy full IPS protection. As it implements its inspection engine
and anti‐port scanning technology based on anomaly and behavior analysis, Personal IPS offers
preventative protection from unauthorized access, worms and other types of attacks that cannot
be stopped by antivirus and other types of security software. The Arxceo logo in the software
flashes to notify the user of when IPS functions are blocking unauthorized packets.
It’s a portable IPS that can be used anytime, anywhere: not only when connecting from within
the company or from home; but even when connecting through a hotel’s ADSL while on a
business trip, or via public wireless LAN hotspots.

The product includes one year of unlimited PHS data communication, allowing IPS‐protected
connections to the Internet while away from the home or office without any additional purchase.
Unlike wired communication, wireless networks have, until now, been particularly vulnerable to
attack. Personal IPS secures wireless communication. After one year, users simply need to
purchase an extend license to continue use. Furthermore, there is no time limit on the IPS itself.
Even after the year of PHS connectivity expires, the IPS can still be used by simply inserting the
Personal IPS card.
JCI group executive officer Jun Tajima commented: “In general, before unauthorized access or
the spread of worms occurs, attackers conduct reconnaissance activities such as port scanning to
collect information about network vulnerabilities. Arxceo owns excellent technology that thwarts
attacks at the reconnaissance level. The JCI Group plans to develop and release the Anshin
INTERNET family of products. We look forward to your continued interest in our products.”
An IPS system that protects the PC itself, Personal IPS has been designed for a wide range of
people, including businesspeople who must use their company laptop PCs while at home or on
business trips; users who store important information on their computers; and people who
participate in Internet banking, trading, and auctions.
About IPS
The purpose of IPS is to safeguard against unauthorized entry attacks associated with the blind
spots of the Internet Protocol. Interest in IPS that can preventively defend against the current
complexity and sophistication of Internet threats, to which antivirus software and firewalls alone
cannot respond, is rapidly increasing. Traditionally, however, products have been considerably
high‐priced (in the ¥3 million range for mid‐level equipment (US avg. market price)). On June 6,
2006, JCI introduced the Ally ip100, which offers a maximum network speed of 100 Mbps and
other high level IPS functionality while maintaining a low price. The Ally ip100 is positioned on
the network route, but the release of the Personal IPS, a specialized IPS for PCs, has functions
identical to those of the Ally ip100 designed to be installed in PCs.
* Arxceo Corporation received the Best of Show Impact Award at the 2005 US RSA Conference, a Best Buy rating from
SC Magazine, and Editors’ Choice awards from numerous leading information security magazines.

■Product Merits
・ A full IPS system embedded into a PC, it stands out not only for its technical excellence, but
also for its user‐friendliness and low price.
・ The product requires the user to make absolutely no changes to their existing network
settings. Furthermore, Personal IPS differs from signature‐based IPS in that it does not use
pattern matching, which elimnates the need for database upgrading, and thus removes a
considerable post‐purchase inconvenience.
・ Arxceo’s unique and advanced IPS technology is based on an anomaly detection engine,
allowing for realtime protection against zero‐day attacks and such reconnaissance activities
as port scanning. The IPS also protects against phishing, DNS cache poisoning and DNS
tunneling, thus preventing the data leakages associated with them.
・ As Personal IPS protects attacks which exploit security holes in firewalls/anti‐virus software
and blocks DoS attacks (including similar attacks such as DDoS), it offers the user greatly
improved security.
・ The package includes one year of PHS connectivity allowing the user to connect to the
Internet while on‐the‐go without any additional purchases.
