Introduction

Founded in 1980, Euroclad is one of the UK’s

leading manufacturers of steel and aluminium

roofing and cladding systems.

Main brands, including Elite Systems,

Euroseam and Secret fix, have become

increasingly popular with architects and

contractors: the core metal profiling activities

being complemented by a full fabrications and

flashings capability.

Synonymous with reliable service and

outstanding technical support, Euroclad has

strong links with leading manufacturers for

specific system elements.

As part of its commitment to quality, service

and the environment Euroclad operate a

Quality Management System approved to

BS EN ISO 9001 : 2000 and an Environmental

Management System approved to ISO 14001.

INTRODUCTION

To help customers better understand the

thermal performance of metal clad buildings

Euroclad have prepared Construction Details,

showing thermal efficiencies of joint details

and plane elements using three-dimensional

models.

These details help illustrate the overall

thermal performance of a roof or wall as

well as the specific heat loss through details

per linear metre.

(6)

Amendments to Building Regulations Approved

Documents L2 (ADL2) came into effect in April 2002 and impose significant new criteria on the construction of

metal buildings. The requirement to reduce CO2

emissions and produce thermally efficient buildings has a significant effect upon the construction of the building envelope. Essentially, U-values have been reduced for both roof and walls, but more significantly, the method of calculation is now much more rigorous. Complete analysis of the plane elements is now mandatory. The software used to model the detrimental affect of any thermal bridges is now quite sophisticated and therefore gives a much more realistic reflection of the actual thermal performance of the total building envelope. Several different programmes are available (both BRE and Euroclad employ TRISCO) but to be compliant, the model must satisfy BS ISO EN 10211-2. This is the required standard for all compliant three-dimensional thermal models.

4

SPECIFICATION AND INSTALLATION

Introduction

In a more revolutionary step, the new regulations also require the calculation of the heat loss through all the details of the building envelope. The thermal efficiency of the ridge, eave, gable, window, door junction, cills etc. must all be calculated. Their propensity to create condensation is also evaluated as a result. Two new criteria have been recognised.

PSI (

ψ

) VALUES

The new three-dimensional thermal models not only calculate the U-value on the plane elements, they are also able to produce psi and F-factors for all junctions and details. The psi value reflects the additional heat loss through the detail per linear metre, when compared to the plane elements. The Building Regulations require the heat loss through the details to be included in the evaluation of the building’s total thermal performance.

(7)

Construction details

5

Introduction

There is no need to achieve the lowest possible psi values, it suffices that the efficiency of the details are calculated and can demonstrate compliance with IP17/01 (5.1).

CALCULATION OF ‘F’ FACTORS

With the introduction of reduced air leakage requirement there was concern surrounding the possibility of

condensation forming on the internal surface surrounding a thermal bridge. The propensity to create condensation is a function of the detail’s thermal inefficiency and the temperature/humidity of the environment within the building.

Internal humidity class and the external minimum temperature factor necessary to prevent condensation.

Software programmes compliant with BS EN ISO 10211-2 allow calculation of each detail’s F-factor. The table above illustrates how knowledge of the building’s use and its internal humidity can lead to easy identification of any detail’s acceptability. The F-factor is simply compared to the minimum allowable for that classification of building. Dramatic changes in F-factors can be achieved by small alterations in the design. The F-value has only to exceed the minimum requirement.

AIR PERMEABILITY

The Building Regulations require the testing of the building envelope. Buildings with a gross floor area in

excess of 500m2must be physically tested.

The standard required is:

10 m3/h/m2at 50 Pascals

The Building Regulations specify testing of building air permeability and in that respect the area of the floor is allowed into the calculation. The allowable air loss in cubic metres area of roof and walls and floor multiplied by 10.

For example, a building square on plan, with a flat roof, 120m per side and 8m high, the figures would be as follows:

120m x 8m = 960m2x 4 (sides)

= 3840m2

120m x 120m = 14400 x 2 (roof and floor)

= 28800m2

Total = 32640m2

So the allowable air loss would be:

326400m3/h

Test results at BRE have proven that a carefully sealed liner on either a built-up system, or a composite panel, will prove a very effective vapour check. For further details please refer to the section on ‘Sealing of liners’ in the Euroclad ‘Design and installation

recommendations’ brochure.

A copy of the Air Pressure report is to be given to the local authority. Humidity class 1 Minimum F-value Building type Storage areas 0.30

SUMMARY

Extensive computer analysis of Euroclad construction details has shown that standard good practice will often

achieve compliance. However, all ψand F-factors must

be calculated and checked to ensure compliance. It should be noted that the application of a particular construction detail in a specific building is determined by the requirements of that individual building.

Other factors, such as building type, internal environment and general layout may significantly affect detail choice. This, together with consideration of the details from other parts of the structure (perhaps with a different construction) must be taken into account during design, specification and installation, when determining

compliance with the Building Regulations.

Air permeability of 10 m3/h/m2at 50 Pascals has been

achieved and bettered both in test and actual experience on site.

Good detailing, careful choice of materials, close liaison with the manufacturer and specialist contractor and early involvement of all parties in the project design will prove that an L2 compliant building can be achieved very effectively with a metal envelope.

Euroclad has a wide range of products including Standing Seam and Secret fix roofing, trapezoidal/ sinusoidal profiles, aluminium fabrications, flashings, powder coating and composite wall panels. Euroclad can offer a full metal building envelope which is truly integrated by design.

The following pages illustrate some standard solutions. Many more are available and particular details can be modelled on a project-by-project basis.

If you need any help or further clarification please do not hesitate to contact the Euroclad Sales department.

EUROCLAD PLANE ELEMENTS

The depths shown on the following four pages are the minimum depths of insulation required to meet the U-values shown. Greater depths may be installed to suit commercially available spacer systems and quilt sizes.

EUROCLAD FLASHINGS DETAILS

The flashings details shown from pages 14 to 40 all give

guidance on the ‘F’ and ‘ψ’ values and these values are

also dependant on the U-values of the plane elements to which they are adjacent. For modeling purposes, all roof elements are assumed to be 0.25 U-value and all wall elements are assumed to be 0.35 U-value.

Colorcoat HPS200

®

Exclusive coating technology, superior performance

CarbonNeutral – the first in the world. Unavoidable CO2

emissions from the pre-finished steel cladding system including fixings and insulation, are measured from cradle to grave and the impact offset. More than just offsetting, the aim is to encourage specification of the most sustainable pre-finished steel products and cladding systems.

Colorcoat

Building manual

Developed in consultation with architects and other

construction professionals, the Colorcoat®Building

Working closely with the Corus Colorcoat®Centre for the
