University of Calgary

Uses Elluminate to facilitate problem-based learning in a blended learning environment. Web conferencing has helped create a ―transformational shift‖ from disseminating

information to creating learning environments that enable students to collaboratively construct their own knowledge.

Large classes benefit most. Web conferencing increases opportunities for students to engage in critical and reflective discourse with their peers and the course instructors— inside and outside of the classroom.

National University of Ireland Galway, School of Medicine

For the graduate diploma in Clinical Education, instructors meet with as many as 30 or as few as 3 learners several times in each 6-week module. They begin with mini-lectures to introduce topics and encourage discussion, and progress to having the learners set the agenda, present materials, and hold discussions.

―As learners get used to using the interface, it becomes more natural and interactive...we encourage them to talk to each other without us there.― (P. Cantillon, General Practice) ―..we now have a means of communicating in a very immediate way with learners scattered over Ireland and …anywhere in the world. They can engage with us and each other in a way that they couldn’t before, particularly as a larger group. The technology allows us to build deeper knowledge because I can deal with misconceptions now, show people other

potential sources of information, or provide examples.‖

University of West Florida

Offers an online Masters in Mathematical Science. "Traditional online teaching does not work well for upper level math courses and is not as good as face-to-face instruction," says Dr. Kuiyuan Li. "However, we still have to meet the needs of those high school teachers and [others] with full-time jobs who need to take graduate-level courses and do not live near our campus."

UWF solved the problem with synchronous ElluminateLive!virtual classrooms. A graduate assistant attends each lecture to handle technical issues and logistics, including saving and posting recordings. They also use Elluminate to demonstrate how to use software

packages, like MATLAB or SAS/STAT applications. The instruction is recorded, so students can replay the lectures as many times as needed.

University of Florida

The University of Florida College of Pharmacy uses Elluminate technology to deliver its part-time Online Master of Science in Pharmacy. Classes are taken one at a time, exclusively through live, interactive Web conferencing.

Web conferencing has led to greater participation in class. One student said, "I never spoke in class during my undergraduate program in a physical classroom. I'm just too shy. But an Elluminate classroom is a safe place to participate in class discussions because I feel secure in my own home. Now I participate in class all the time.‖
