OCTOBER 6, 2019 • TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME CATHOLIC CHURCH

S T . M ICHAEL

THE A RCHANGEL

Consecrated to the Pierced Hearts of Jesus and Mary

Thank You

We were certainly blessed in many ways during our celebration last weekend of our Feast Day in honor of our patron St. Michael the Archangel! The wonderful opportunity for us to get together like this would not have been possible without God and without generous volunteers. For all of this to happen, it requires committed, hard-working individuals.

Many hours have been poured into meetings, planning, along with execution. While we work for the glory of God and for the good of His people, I am thankful for all of those who contributed to the success of our celebrations.

I want to express my thanks for the Feast Day Committee, the hub where all things are organized for the weekend. In a special way, I want to recognize our chair for the Committee, Zachary Bruck, whose organizational skills have kept us working together to meet deadlines and who also took on the role as the main photographer and videographer for us!

Many individuals were needed as well for each part of the Celebrations, and I thank you for the time and effort you have dedicated to make our Feast Day celebrations possible, memorable, and enjoyable. While I won’t be able to mention everyone by name, know that you are appreciated. Thank you to all of our Eucharistic adorers who came to spend time with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament during our days of adoration (and for all intercessors). Thank you to the Cuccia family and their volunteers who made the homemade Italian dinner on Friday. Thank you to Dale and Jean Brose and their volunteers for offering the pig roast on Saturday. Thank you to Molly Roehrig for organizing the charity walk this year to benefit CASA and for those who supported the cause!

Thank you to Karmen Way for organizing the raffle. Thank you to DeeDee Perkins for working with all of the extra traffic that always happens during the last few weeks leading up to Feast Day, for Lynn Fedewa for helping us keep our financials in order, and for Sandy May with offering much needed assistance in the office.

Thank you to Sara Schultz for taking the lead on running our first Parish Feud and all the marketing/promotional material to advertise our Feast Day celebrations. Thank you to Michael Roehrig for being the emcee for the Parish Feud.

Thank you to the Basket Committee (Kookie Braun, Jean Brose, Mary Robinson, and Molly Roehrig) who, with the help of generous individuals, families, and organizations, were able to produce 51 baskets to be raffled and organized

items for the silent auction!

Thank you to Gary Carter who oversaw the success of our first corn-hole tournament. Thank you to Brittanie Bruck for offering the movie for the kids on Friday. Thank you to Mike Newcomer for changing the lights in our parking lot for LEDs to offer more light at night. Thank you to MCES for offering the children’s games and concessions! Thank you to all of our teens and adults who volunteered throughout the weekend. Thank you to all those who donated a basket or an item for the raffle drawings, and for those who participated.

Thank you to all those who took the time to bake some goodies for us, whether it be for the cake walk or for the desserts after dinner.

Thank you for all those who helped liturgically from the music in honor of the angels to those who served in various liturgical ministries. Thank you for those who came at any point during our celebration to be a part of our community.

And to those I have missed, consider your double portioned reward to await you in Heaven.

St. Michael Relic Stone

For those who are interested in obtaining one of these that I mentioned last weekend in my homily, it has been recommended by a priest, Fr. Chad Ripperger, that a donation of $50 be made to the Basilica Sanctuary of St.

Michael in Gargano, Italy with a note that requests the St.

Michael relic stone. He explains that this would cover international shipping costs and the expense of the reliquary which holds the relic stone. Here’s the article that explains a little bit of the history and how you can obtain one: https://

God knows what our needs and wants are before we even ask Him, yet He wants us to ask Him just the same. God wants us to go to Him with every concern in our daily lives no matter how small because He wants us to be in a relationship with Him. He wants to hear about our little troubles or concerns, the things that frustrate us and the things in which we find great joy.

He also wants us to turn to Him when things are going so bad ─ when we cannot see His hand at work in our lives. It seems that when there has been a death in the family, it is easy to turn to God for comfort in times of great sorrow, and there is nothing wrong with connecting to our Loving Father when our hearts are heavy. God wants us to come to Him and find comfort in His arms.

Relationships are built over time and God knew us before we were born. His son, Jesus, calls us by name to follow Him just as He asked the disciples to do the same, but sometimes it is easier to be a disciple than at other times. The key is to have a strong, consistent prayer life. Prayer connects us to God and His Son in such a way that our relationship is nurtured. Giving thanks to God for the little pleasures in life as well as the challenges helps us to keep God in the forefront of our lives. If we thank God for a meal we are about to receive, we should also thank Him for the gift of another day or even the rain that caused us to have to change our plans. If we see God’s hand in our lives each day, then we should take a moment to thank Him.

If we are angry because of the loss of a loved one, God wants to hear that too. Don’t worry, God will take our anger and He will love us just the same. God does not desire that we suffer in this life, but this life is not the only life. The sufferings of this world will be turned to the joys in the next for those follow who the Commandments.

It is important to pray for those who have asked us to pray for them. Praying for specific needs of those who asked us to pray for them helps to serve our brothers and sisters and to bring their needs to God. Praying by name to God for the needs of others helps to strengthen our relationship with both God and those who have asked us to pray for them or those for whom we should be praying. There is always someone in need of prayer and if you can’t think of anyone specific in your life, there is also that poor soul in Purgatory who has no one to pray for them.

God wants us to ask for what we need and to pray by name for those who we know need prayer. He wants us to turn to Him because He is love and He wants us to experience His love in many ways. Sometimes the answer is no or not now, but every prayer is answered in time. The key to any relationship is communication and prayer helps us to communicate with the One who created and loves us.

Peace be to you.

SUSAN’S CORNER

The wonder of it all!

Deacon Tracy M. Esper A Journey of Faith Series God’s Name

“But,” said Moses to God, “if I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what do I tell them?”

God replied to Moses: I am who I am. Then he added: This is what you will tell the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you.

(Ex. 3:13-15) How would you like to have the name, “I Am Who Am.”

Pretty deep. In fact, it’s so deep that it’s a name that can only be applied to God. This is God’s name given Him by Himself and revealed to Moses for all to come to know. This is God’s essence, His very being, His nature. It is Who He Is!

The Catechism explains this using mysterious language:

God is the fullness of Being and of every perfection, without origin and without end. All creatures receive all that they are and have from him; but he alone is his very being, and he is of himself everything that he is. (#213) So what exactly does that mean? That’s right! The question is the answer! Huh? Confusing? Well, in fact it’s not actually confusing; rather, it’s profoundly mysterious. This IS the nature and essence of God. To Be. To exist. To be existence itself. To have always been. And, interestingly, God’s name is a sort of refusal to have a name. It’s as if God were saying,

“Look, I cannot be named. My essence IS WHO I AM and this is how I AM to be known.”

Yes, it’s still confusing. But that’s OK. Perhaps what we should be happy understanding is that God cannot really be named but if we try to do so then we are left with a profound mystery. It’s the mystery of His nature.

And it will only be understood properly in Heaven. But for now we do our best.

What else can we say about God from His name? That He is stable, permanent, unchanging, the fullness and source of all being, the beginning and the end of all being, Truth, and the source of all truth, and so much more. The rest of our reflections on the Creed should help us enter more deeply into this mystery of the essence and nature of God.

October 7 Our Lady of the Rosary

The traditional image of the Madonna of the Rosary depicts Mary holding the child Jesus in her arm and giving the rosary to St. Dominic. This significant iconography shows that the rosary is a means given by the Virgin for contemplating Jesus and, meditating on his life, for loving and following him always more faithfully. - Benedict XVI The Rosary is a Scripture-based prayer. It begins with the Apostles' Creed, which summarizes the great mysteries of the Catholic faith. The Our Father, which introduces each mystery, is from the Gospels. The first part of the Hail Mary is the angel's words announcing Christ's birth and Elizabeth's greeting to Mary. St. Pius V officially added the second part of the Hail Mary. The Mysteries of the Rosary center on the events of Christ's life. There are four sets of Mysteries: Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious and––added by Saint John Paul II in 2002––the Luminous.

The repetition in the Rosary is meant to lead one into restful and contemplative prayer related to each Mystery. The gentle repetition of the words helps us to enter into the silence of our hearts, where Christ's spirit dwells. The Rosary can be said privately or with a group.

FAITH FORMATION

We are all familiar with today’s reading about the mustard seed. If you have never seen one, check out the aisle at your local supermarket that carries spices.

You will see them there and they are very tiny in size.

Yet, if you planted one of those seeds, it will grow into a large tree. Kind of like a little acorn grows into a majestic oak tree. I get the part of my faith being small like the seeds, but growing as big as a tree?? Many of us think in order for that to happen we have to spend all of our time in church or attend a seminary and work can be daunting and hard. But not so, says Jesus. All we have to do is believe and follow His commandments. Our faith can grow and change through ordinary tasks of life. St. Dominic Savio once said, “Nothing seems tiresome or painful when you are working for a master who pays well.” And who pays better than God? So when we work, be it a job, chores, or in service to others, remember who is paying you in the end and maybe it won’t seem so bad. Keep your eyes fixed on the Lord and truly, through your work, your faith in Him will increase.

Each Theology on Tap gathering features a speaker on topics relating to religion and theology. Archbishop Vigneron will share how he discerned the call to the priesthood as well as the joys and struggles he has experienced in his vocation. He will also explore how we can best follow God’s will in our lives.

Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

In today’s Gospel Jesus tells his disciples, “When you have done all you have been commanded, say: We are unprofitable servants; we have only done what we were obliged to do.”

This week, please help the Society of St.

Vincent de Paul to bring the love and mercy of Jesus to those who feel left out and abandoned, for indeed we are only doing “what we are obliged to do.”
