Introduction

The PhD-Program “Hearing” is a 3-year PhD-program supported by the state of Lower Saxony and is organised by three universities in Hannover (MHH, TiHo, HMT) and the University of Oldenburg. In Hannover the program in embedded in the structures of the Center for Systems Neuroscience (ZSN) and in Oldenburg the students are part of the graduate school of the Research Centre Neurosensory Science (FZNS). Funding is available for 15 Georg-Christoph-Lichtenberg scholarships, eight in Hannover (6 MHH, 1 TiHo, 1 HMT) and seven at the University of Oldenburg. Each year up to six students can join the program as associated members with funding from different sources.

In addition to the existing curricula of these two graduate schools the program “hearing” offers specific courses related to the function and pathophysiology of the auditory system. Obligatory classes are offered once a year, while elective classes are offered on request. At least one third of the obligatory classes and at least one third of the electives should be chosen from the program “Hearing” while the other two thirds are classes offered by the ZSN and FZNS, respectively. The classes belong to one or more of the three fields: (1) Hearing Research, (2) General Neurobiology, and (3) Soft skills and Communicative Competence which are indicated in brackets for each class.

If places are available, the classes of the program “hearing” are also open to other students from the ZSN and FZNS.
