LAST GAME

Thursday, December 1: Flyers 3, Ottawa 2 (OT) at Canadian Tire Centre – The Flyers overcame a 2-0 deficit with two goals in 60 seconds during the third period, and Claude Giroux’s eighth career overtime goal gave the team the extra point and its third victory in a row. The Flyers got on the board on a goal by Giroux with 3:10 to play, and then Michael Del Zotto fired a shot that found its way past Ottawa goaltender Mike Condon exactly 60 seconds later. After a scoreless third period, Jake Voracek found Giroux in the left circle for a slapshot that ended the night. Steve Mason stopped 19 of 21 Ottawa bids, while Condon turned away 29 of 32 Flyers shots. Stars of the Game: 1 – Claude Giroux; 2 – Jake Voracek; 3 – Mike Hoffman.

RECENT GAME HIGLIGHTS

11/29 vs. BOS

The Flyers and Bruins engaged in a nine-round shootout, which is the second longest shootout the Flyers have participated in since the introduction of the event in 2005, and the longest they have won. The only longer shootout was a 13-round shootout on October 7, 2006 against the New York Rangers, which the Rangers won on a goal in the 13th round – the only one of the entire shootout.

The Bruins had 47 shots in the game. Per the Elias Sports Bureau, that’s the most they’ve had against the Flyers since February 9, 1974 when they had 48 shots in a 5-3 Bruins win at the Spectrum.

The 47 shots were the most the Flyers have given up this season. The last game with that many shots against was March 22 of last season when Columbus had 53 shots in a 3-2 Blue Jackets win in Columbus. The last time the Flyers gave up this many shots at home was April 5, 2015 when Pittsburgh had 47 in a 4-1 Flyers win.

Steve Mason picked up the fourth win of his career that came while facing 47 or more shots. He did it once before with the Flyers in the aforementioned 4/5/15 Pittsburgh game, and the other two were with Columbus – one where he faced 50 shots (11/19/10 at ANA) and one where he faced 48 (12/17/08 vs. SJS).

Shayne Gostisbehere was responsible for 10 of those 44 shot attempts – he had one on goal and nine more that didn’t make it to the net, four of which were blocked and five of which missed. No other Flyer had more than five shot attempts.

Giroux snapped a nine-game goalless drought with his power play goal. It was his 12th power play point of the year, which leads the league.

UPCOMING MILESTONES

Claude Giroux plays his 600th NHL game today, becoming the 19th player in Flyers history to reach that milestone. He will become the 14th player in Flyers history to play 600 games while also posting at least 500 points with the club. Giroux recently moved into 10th on the team’s all-time scoring list, passing Simon Gagne, and is four assists away from moving into fifth in franchise history in assists – he is currently tied with Rod Brind’Amour for seventh at 366, and is three back of both Eric Lindros and Rick MacLeish.

MacDonald – 2 assists to reach 100 in the NHL Read – 5 assists to reach 100 as a Flyer & in the NHL Streit – 6 goals to reach 100 in the NHL

Mason – 1 win to pass Pete Peeters for 7th on the Flyers All Time List Manning – 2 games to reach 100 as a Flyer & in the NHL

VandeVelde – 6 games to reach 200 as a Flyer

NOTES OF THE NIGHT

The Flyers come into the game with their top three scorers all tied at 22 points apiece. Wayne Simmonds has 11 goals and 11 assists, while Jake Voracek has eight goals and 14 assists and Claude Giroux has seven goals and 15 assists. Giroux and Voracek come into the game on four-game and three-game scoring streaks, respectively, with Giroux posting three goals and two assists on his streak and Voracek accounting for a goal and four assists. Both streaks came after barren stretches for each player – Giroux snapped a nine- game goalless streak with his tally on Tuesday vs. Boston and had one point in his previous seven games before the current run, while Voracek’s streak comes after he went six in a row without a point. Simmonds has points in three of his last four games and seven in the last 11.

Giroux leads the league with 555 faceoffs taken and is second in wins with 303.

Michael Del Zotto also comes into the game on a scoring streak, having posted two goals and an assist over the last three games since returning from a three-game absence as a healthy scratch. Del Zotto has recorded a total of 14 hits and seven blocked shots in those three games.

Ivan Provorov is averaging 20:17 of ice time per game, which is second on the Flyers to Shayne Gostisbehere (20:53) and is fifth among all NHL rookies.

The Flyers rank second in the NHL in hits (649) and six in blocked shots (402). Radko Gudas is fourth in hits with 82.

The Flyers are second in the league in shots on goal with 811 and rank third in shots per game at 32.4. They have outshot their opponent in 15 of their 25 games this season, but are only 7-7-1 when doing so. The Flyers also lead the league in missed shots on goal at 357.

The Flyers are second in the NHL in total goals (77) and are third in average goals scored per game (3.08). At the same time, they

have allowed the second-most goals in the league (80) and in goals allowed per game (3.20). The Flyers are tied for fifth in 5-on-5

goals with 45, but have allowed 54, the second-most in the league.

Dave Hakstol was named the 19th head coach in Flyers history on May 18, 2015.

Hakstol, 47 (7/30/1968), comes to the Flyers from the University of North Dakota, where he served as the head coach of the school’s hockey program for 11 seasons. During that time, Hakstol’s teams posted an overall record of 289-143-43 (.654). The Warburg, Alberta native led UND to the NCAA postseason in each of his 11 seasons, including seven appearances in the NCAA Frozen Four, most of any program in the country during that span.

North Dakota won three regular-season conference titles under Hakstol (WCHA 2008-09 and 2010-11; NCHC 2014-15). He also led UND to four WCHA playoff titles (05-06, 09-10, 10-11 and 11-12).

46 of Hakstol’s players at UND played professionally in 2014-15 and 20 played in the NHL, including Jonathan Toews of the Chicago Blackhawks and Matt Greene of the Los Angeles Kings. UND produced a total of 42 NHL draft picks during Hakstol’s tenure, including eight first-round picks.
