TONIGHT’S GAME

The Flyers continue a three-game homestand today and hit the halfway point of the 2018-19 season as they welcome in the Calgary

Flames in their 41st game of the season and 19th at home. The Flyers are 15-20-5 for 35 points after a 5-3 loss to Carolina on

Thursday night in the first game of this run. This is the second game in a stretch where the Flyers play seven of 10 at home including

the first game after their bye week, and don’t leave town for more than one game at a time during that stretch. The homestand will

continue on Monday night when the Flyers host the St. Louis Blues.

FLYERS VS. FLAMES

This is the second and final meeting between the Flyers and Flames this season.

LAST MEETING

Wednesday, December 12, 2018 – Calgary 6, Flyers 5 (OT) at Scotiabank Saddledome: The Flyers scored four times in the second

period and held a two-goal lead twice, but Calgary scored two goals in the final 68 seconds and then won it 35 seconds into overtime.

Sam Bennett gave Calgary a 1-0 lead after one period, but the Flyers scored four times in the first 7:43 of the second period – Travis

Sanheim, James van Riemsdyk, Sean Couturier and Dale Weise all tallied – and with two Calgary goals mixed in over the period, it

was 4-3 Flyers after two frames. Couturier put the Flyers up 5-3 with a third-period shorthanded goal, but goals from Rasmus

Andersson with 1:08 to play and from Monahan with less than seven seconds to go forced the extra session, which Johnny Gaudreau

ended off a rebound. Anthony Stolarz faced 41 shots and made 35 saves, both of which were career highs, in absorbing the loss;

Mike Smith started for Calgary and stopped 10 of 14 shots through two periods before yielding to David Rittich, who stopped 4 of 5 in

the third. Stars of the Game: 1- Sean Monahan; 2 – Sean Couturier; 3 – Matthew Tkachuk.

NOTABLES

Sean Couturier recorded his 13th career game of three or more points and his third this season, all of which have consisted of two

goals and one assist. He played 26:16, which led all forwards. It’s only the second time in his career that he’s played more than 26

minutes in a game; his career high is 28:05, done at Tampa Bay on March 3 of last season.

Ivan Provorov played 29:28, which was a season high and the third-highest single-game ice time of his career.

Jake Voracek extended a scoring streak to six games. He had three goals and four assists for seven points in the run at that time.

LAST GAME

Thursday, January 3, 2019 – Carolina 5, Flyers 3 at Wells Fargo Center: The Flyers scored three times in the third period to turn a

4-0 deficit into a 4-3 score, but couldn’t find the equalizer in an eventual 5-3 setback. Carolina scored three times in the second period

and then a fourth five minutes into the third, after which the Flyers got on the board with a power-play goal from Wayne Simmonds

6:17 into the third. Sean Couturier scored 1:06 later to make it 4-2, and then James van Riemsdyk tallied with 9:02 left to pull the

Flyers within one. But a goal from Teuvo Teravainen with just over four minutes to play stalled the momentum and closed the scoring.

Michal Neuvirth stopped 23 shots in the loss, while Petr Mrazek took the win with 33 saves. Stars of the Game: 1 – Teuvo

Teravainen; 2 – Claude Giroux; 3 – Sebastien Aho.

season, their third game above 70 percent and their fourth game of 40 or more faceoff wins. It’s the second time they did it on this road

trip after going 44 for 62 (71.0 pct) on Saturday at Florida. Headed into Wednesday night’s games, here had only been four games this

season in the entire NHL where a team was above 70 percent on faceoffs and the Flyers have three of those. In the last 12 years, only

two other teams have had three 70+percent games in a season – Carolina last year and Colorado two years ago.

The Flyers’ penalty kill has operated at 82.1 percent over the last 19 games (46 for 56), which is 12th in the league in that timeframe. It

comes after the PK went 68.5 percent (50 for 73) on the PK in the first 21 games of the season. The Flyers were able to post a pair of

power play goals Thursday vs. Carolina; prior to that game, they had just three power play goals in 44 opportunities in their previous 18

contests.

Carter Hart’s arrival to the NHL has made him the second-youngest goaltender in Flyers history to appear in a game, doing so on Dec.

18 vs. DET at the age of 20 years, 127 days. Only Maxime Ouellet was younger (19 years, 112 days). Hart is the youngest goalie in

Flyers history to win a game and was the fifth-youngest in the NHL since 1996-97 to win his debut. He is also the first goalie in NHL

history and the first Flyer at any position to wear #79.

Claude Giroux was named to the Metropolitan Division All-Star team on Wednesday, earning the sixth All-Star nod of his career.

Giroux has 13 goals and 33 assists for 46 points on the season, which leads the team by 14 points. This season he has moved into

fourth in franchise history in points (723) and second all-time in assists (496), leaving him four assists shy of becoming just the second

player in franchise history to record 500 assists with the team. He is also 13 games away from passing Brian Propp for third all-time in

games played. In addition to last year’s game in Tampa Bay, Giroux has represented the Flyers in 2016 (Nashville), 2015 (Columbus),

2012 (Ottawa) and 2011 (Carolina). He becomes the first Flyer to make a sixth All-Star appearance since Eric Lindros (six times) was

selected for the Eastern Conference squad in 2000. The Flyers’ franchise record belongs to Bob Clarke, who was named to 10

mid-season NHL All-Star teams and appeared in nine of those games.

Travis Sanheim is averaging 21:08 of ice time per game in the last nine games dating back to December 18. He has played more than

20 minutes in seven of those nine games, including a career-high 24:14 on Monday at Carolina. Prior to then, he had only played more

than 20 minutes in two of 31 games this season.
