Swimming Carnival

On Friday the 30th of October, Pentland State School attended the

annual Dalrymple Cluster Swimming Carnival at Greenvale. It was a

wonderful 34-degree day filled with school spirit, camaraderie, a few

nerves, chants and competition.

The carnival displayed many impressive individual performances, high

levels of encouragement from our students as well as a great

community spirit amongst the cluster schools. The level of participation

in the pool was outstanding. Our students embraced the day and all

who attended are to be commended for the way they represented

themselves and our school.

Well done to all swimmers and participants for your efforts on the day.

Congratulations to the age level champions for your excellent

performances; Mackenzie F, Ashtyn S, Elysse P, Kye M, Brooke J and

Althea H. Finally, a big congratulations to Ravenswood State School

who took out the 2020 cluster swimming championships by

accumulating the most points for all events on the day. Well done.

Thank you to all staff, students and parents for your support of the

swimming carnival that highlights the wonderful community we have

at Pentland State School. We look forward to announcing the

Dalrymple swimming team in the near future.

Prac Student – Miss Madi

Hi everyone!

For those of you who haven’t met me, my name is Madison McColl and

I am a second year student at Central Queensland University. I am

currently completing my Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood). I

live in Charters Towers and am one of the Early Childhood Teachers

at Kids Early Learning Centre. In my spare time I enjoy spending

time with my family and my three dogs.

With my placement coming to an end this week, I am forever thankful

that Pentland State School enabled me with the opportunity to

observe how they run on a daily basis. I have built and

established positive relationships with the children in the K-2

class, staff members and parents. I will definitely miss everyone!

As I previously told you, I am a Kindergarten Teacher at one of the

centres in Charters Towers. Therefore, it has been ever so

valuable for my personal development and professional teaching

practices, to have had the opportunity to observe how a

Kindergarten is run and taught in an Ed Queensland environment.

Thank you for making my time at Pentland State School enjoyable!

Miss Madi 

Mr Nicholson & Mrs P’s

Littlies

The Little class has been working extremely hard to start term 4 off with Mr. Nicholson and Mrs Peagham. It has been great to see all the Students back keen and eager to get into their work.

During English the year 1’s and 2’s have been exploring plot and characterisation within stories, we have been learning this concept by reading a variety of picture books and breaking them down into the parts of a Narrative being; Orientation, Complication and Resolution. The students have to create a new complication and resolution to the story.

In English this term, the prep students are responding to different texts in which they have been reading a assortment of books and planning a new event and ending in their own words with Images drawn to match. During Math lesson’s the Year 2 students have been learning all about fractions, they have done really well to grasp a difficult Mathematics concept. Year 1 have been learning their numbers from zero – 100 and fractions also. The Preps have been learning their numbers 0 – 20. With these Mathematics concepts, all learnt over the first half of term 4, it is now time to move onto learning all about money and their first job is to organise a budget for Mr. Nicholson’s coffees every day!

In HASS, the Prep children have been learning about places that are special to them and in their community. We have been having lots of fun with these lessons with the children building their own special places and going around the school thinking and drawing where their special place is when they are at School. The year 1’s and 2’s have been drawing representations of the world as geographical divisions and the location of Australia. They have also been representing connections between places by constructing maps and using symbols.

Prep/Kindy Science

This term in Science the kindy and prep students have been exploring the ways different objects move. We have described the properties of different objects, how this affects their movement and shared and reflected on our observations. We have used the Age Appropriate Pedagogy of inquiry to create the lessons and the students have thoroughly enjoyed every moment! Each lesson the

students dressed up as a Scientist and create their own name. I was Professor HamPeag. The

students favourite investigation was bouncing eggs. It was great to see the students so engaged and excited about learning.

Classroom

The upper school classroom have been working

extremely hard for their new teacher, Mrs Jessie

Peagham. They have been very welcoming and shown

her their strong commitment to their learning and their

great school.

In English, the Year 3/4 team have been reading and

learning about traditional stories from all over the world.

The students have discovered that all traditional stories

have a moral and that most of the characters are

animals that possess human-like qualities. They are looking forward to publishing and reading their

very own traditional tale, created especially for a younger audience. The Year 5/6 team have been

practising writing persuasive arguments about books that convey messages. They have been

focusing on analysing the structural, visual and language features used in the books to strengthen

their argument.

In Maths, the entire class have been learning about fractions. All

students have participated in hands-on learning experiences during

maths lessons to capture their engagement, such as, games,

counting on number lines and cutting up fruit/sandwiches. Students

have shown great persistence to grasp such a difficult topic. Well

done.

In Science, the Year 3/4 team have been experimenting with contact

and non-contact forces. Contact forces, such as, friction, applied

force and air resistance are forces that can cause change or motion

to an object my touching it. Whereas, non-contact forces, such as,

gravity and magnetism, are forces that can cause change or motion

without touching an object. The students even been lucky enough to play many games during their

science lessons and then of course, examine the forces involved in

each game. The Year 5/6 team have been learning about electricity

and different kinds of electrical energy. They have been

experimenting with electrical circuits and solving problems that arise

with the flow of energy within the circuits. The students have also

been learning about renewable and non-renewable energy and the

advantages/disadvantages of the different kinds of energy.

Chappies Corner

Hello to the Pentland School Community.

There is a new normal and life moves forward. On the last week of the last term, I got the man flu. I didn't want to share it before the school holidays so I went to the doctors got swabbed just to be safe. I was clear and just had man flu.

During school term, we had crazy hair day and Ms List had so many things in her hair it was fantastic. Kye took out first prize with a blue and red gelled creation. Mr N took several photo's of the creations there was time and effort put into many hair-styles. There was gold coin donation and the $46 raised went to Canteen who sent us a certificate of appreciation.

I'm impressed with the behaviour of the students in this term with many acts of kindness and great leadership examples being demonstrated. Well done.
