COURSE DESCRIPTION: Chemistry is the study of the properties of chemicals and the changes they can

undergo. In this course we will look at topics such as the states of matter, chemical and physical changes, atomic structure, the periodic table, and chemical equations and reactions. The theory will be reinforced by practical laboratory experiments.

BROWARD COUNTY GRADING SCALE APPROXIMATE GRADING BREAKDOWN

The grading scale below is used for all assignments.

90 – 100 % = A 87 – 89 % = B+ 80 – 86 % = B 77 – 79 % = C+ 70 – 76 % = C 67 – 69 % = D+ 60 – 66 % = D 0 – 59 % = F

Every day you must bring your chemistry binder, paper, pen/pencil, and calculator to class. The lab portfolio will be kept in the classroom. All work and other materials that will be handed out must be kept in the binder.

CLASS WORK: During class, students are expected to work in their seats alone, in pairs, or in designated

groups (depending on the nature of the assignment). The finished product will determine grades for individual class work.

HOMEWORK: Homework is due at the beginning of class on the assigned due date. Homework assignments

should have all the corrections made during the class review. The homework will be checked and graded at random for completion periodically.

WEEKLY PROGRESS REPORT:

The WEEKLY PROGRESS REPORT (WPR) must be filled in with the updated averages from Pinnacle and signed by a parent or guardian. The WPR is due every Wednesday or Thursday (dates listed based on

Blue/ Gold schedule) with any completed missing or late assignments from the previous week. Please

check your grades frequently in Pinnacle and ask questions if necessary. (Comments can be made on WPR)

LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED as follows:

a. Work not submitted due to an absence will be marked as “Z” indicating missing and is due according to make up policy.

b. Completed late assignments (assignments not submitted on the due date with a ”0” grade) can be submitted together with signed Weekly Progress Report (every Tuesday on dates listed) signed by Parent or Guardian for 60% of the original grade.

LABWORK: All written and completed lab reports are due on the date assigned after the experiment has been

completed. Lab make-ups (virtual labs or alternative assignments) must be completed within one week of the missed lab. All graded lab reports must be placed in the LAB-Portfolio with the pages numbered and added to the table of contents.

QUIZZES: There will be a lot of announced and un-announced quizzes and mini-assessments during the

course. These could be made up with an alternative assignment at the discretion of the teacher.

TESTS: There will be a test at the end of every one or more major concepts. Tests will be announced and

listed on the class schedule. Any student who is in school the day a test is given must take the test even if the student missed the review for the test. This means, that being absent the day before a test does not excuse a

student from a scheduled test.

Make-up time for missed tests is allowed the next class period or after school as arranged with the teacher. The missed test MUST BE MADE UP within the next 5 school days. Tests not made up within this time will be given a ZERO grade. Tests that are missed due to an unexcused absence will be graded with a deduction of 10% of the grade earned.

(3)

EXTRA CREDIT: Extra credit will be given for the COMPLETED Weekly Progress Report submitted at the end

of each quarter and any unused Rest Room Passes (from 3 given per quarter) submitted at the end of each quarter. All students will be given equal opportunities to do enrichment activities to earn Extra Credit in Chemistry.

GENERAL INFORMATION: All school and county policies will be enforced in class. The following is a list of

some important ones to remember.

Make-up Work: Students have 2 school days to make up the required work (work assigned during the absence) for each day they have an absence, not including the day they return. Work assigned before the absence is due

on the day the student returns.

If a student fails to appear for their scheduled make up, there will not be another opportunity to makeup the work. Any work not submitted on time will be marked as a zero.

Tardiness: Students are expected to be at their desk immediately after the second bell rings.Students will be

admitted to class without a valid pass after the tardy bell but the attendance will be recorded as Tardy Unexcused.

Attendance Policy: The attendance policy requires students to submit forms signed by parents for excused

absences. These forms can be obtained from the front office, Student Counseling Office, and are also available online and must be submitted within 48 hours of absence.

Dress Code: Students are expected to follow the SBBC dress code as described in the student handbook Field trips/forms: Any forms needing a teacher signature or other information must be handed to me before the

class begins. The forms will be returned at the end of the class. Students may not interrupt a class period to get a form signed. Students on a field trip are responsible for making arrangements with the teacher, before their trip, concerning work that will be missed.

Passes: There will be No passes issued during the first or last ten minutes of class. Passes will be issued

for emergencies only, recorded and signed in their own school agenda and clip board next to the door. **(Extra

Credit for class participation will be given to students who do not use the rest room passes more than three times per quarter.)

Detentions and referrals: Continued inappropriate classroom behavior will result in a teacher detention after a

student has been warned. Detentions will be served in the room assigned at a prearranged time. Students will be required to do tasks, such as cleaning boards, arranging books or materials in the classroom, cleaning lab equipment etc., assigned at the discretion of the teacher. Serious infractions will result in referrals to

administration.

prior arrangements in Room 220. Students can also go to National Honor Society after school tutoring for additional help.

HONOR CODE & CELLULAR VIOLATION

“Pompano Beach High School prides itself on preparing students for the rigors of college. It is therefore imperative that students do their own work so that they learn content accurately. The faculty expects

academic integrity; therefore, students must abide by the PBHS Honor Code when they complete assignments, tests, quizzes, projects, and all other work, both in class and out. "

Major cheating

Major cheating is defined as "the unauthorized use and/or sharing, distributing, publicizing or duplicating of any instructional materials, copied or written information obtained by any means that is intended to be used for academic or personal gain.”

Other forms of cheating

1. Plagiarism: a written assignment with an excerpt taken word for word from another source without attribution, or a written assignment with ideas taken from another source without attribution.

2. Crib sheets, cheat sheets, using electronic devices to get or give answers on a formal assessment (including texting between classes)

3. Giving or receiving answers before, during, or after a formal assessment. 4. Copying from another student during a formal assessment.

5. Submission of a project/portfolio that was not entirely completed by the student.

6. Blatant copying and pasting from internet translation sites for the purpose of completing projects, presentations, and assignments

7. Copying homework/classwork

8. Allowing another student to copy homework/classwork

Consequences for Minor / Major cheating:

● Zero on the assignment with note in Pinnacle ● Parent contact

● Teacher detentions /(Major) Referral to administration.

Any student giving information would be considered equally as guilty of cheating as a student receiving information.

Cellphones can be used during class “only” with the teacher’s permission or consent. Violations of the cell phone policy will result in a call to security for the confiscation of the cell phone.
