BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP:

The next meeting is Thursday, November 10, when we will discuss From Crisis to Calling: Finding Your Moral Center in the Toughest Decisions. This is a wonderful book (137 pages). Part I describes a dramatic rescue mission and refugee crisis in Africa, and analyzes the array of moral decisions involved. Part II tells the stories of people from various walks of life who have been faced with decisions that are life changing. One of those people is a long time parishioner at St. John the Evangelist, Jim Post. The authors, Sasha Chanoff and his father, David Chanoff, raise a host of questions about the life-defining choices many of us are asked to make.

The Book Discussion Group meets monthly (except for December) from September through May, generally on the second Tuesday of the month, in the Parish Center, from 7:30 to 9:00p.m. For further information contact John Stewart at (617) 969-0950 or

[email protected].

EVENING FOR WOMEN: ALLELUJAH! St. John's Evening for Women program returns this Tuesday, November 1 at 6:30 p.m.

In the light of the Year of Mercy, come join us on the first Tuesday of the month, starting November 1, for a graced evening of prayer, meditation and sharing! Let's wrap up together this fabulous Jubilee Year, going into depth in the face of Mercy. Bring one of your favorite recipes for a wonderful Pot Luck! All are welcome!

Begins in Powers Hall (St. John lower church).

October, 2016

My dear friends in Christ,

First of all, let me express my heartfelt thanks for the warm welcome you have given me since I arrived as pastor of the St. John-St. Paul Collaborative in July. I am truly blessed to be pastor of two wonderful parishes, each with rich traditions of vibrant liturgies, inspiring music, countless opportunities for faith formation for all ages and outreach to the needy. Both parishes are thriving and we hope to enhance the vitality of each parish as we grow together as a collaborative.

One significant aspect of the collaborative is the way the staffs of both parishes work closely together. Some staff members, including the priests, deacon, Director of Operations and Finance, and Business Manager, are assigned to the collaborative as a whole. Others, including religious education staff, music ministry and administrative staff, are assigned to the individual parishes. All staff of both parishes work in close collaboration with each other. As a result, we will soon be making adjustments to the physical locations of some staff so that those who work together most closely can work together more easily and efficiently.

1.) Religious Education and Music Staff will remain in their current locations both at St. John’s and St. Paul’s.

2.) The main offices for the Pastor, Parochial Vicar, St. Paul’s Pastoral Associate and Youth Ministry

Coordinator will be at St. Paul’s at 502 Washington Street. St. Paul’s administrative staff will also be on site every weekday until noon.

3.) Our new Collaborative Administrative Offices will be at the Parish Center (former convent) at

St. John’s at 39 Washington Street. All offices formerly at St. John’s Rectory will be here, in addition to the Business Manager and administrative staff.

We plan to transition staff to their new locations by November 1, 2016.

The above is just a practical reorganization so that we can work and minister together more effectively. The priests and other staff will be happy to meet you at whatever location is most convenient for you. We are here for you!

Look for regular updates and Frequently Asked Questions in the bulletin. I am excited to begin this journey of faith together!

Sincerely yours in Christ,

YÜA ]|Å

ST. JOHN’S

Coats for Kids” Collection – Weekends of November 5-6 and 12-13:

Each year in November, St. John’s participates in the Coats for Kids drive by Anton’s Cleaners, a Boston-wide coat collection campaign for children, teens, adults and babies. Anton’s cleans all the donated coats and coordinates their distribution to those in need. Please bring gently used, warm, winter coats to the Rectory garage after Mass on the weekends of November 5-6 and 12-13.

YEAR OF MERCY: Pope Francis’ Year of Mercy calls us to know mercy and show mercy in a very intentional way. Take time each week to be mindful of ways you show mercy to others… through forgiveness or through acts of kindness to others in need. Write down your act of mercy on a heart and then place it in the Mercy Basket next to the offertory table at the back of the Church.
