Challenges in building Analytical Applications

z Information has become the key strategic asset for forward-thinking enterprises in today's Internet economy

z The speed and effectiveness with which businesses capitalize on their information stores will separate the winners from the losers.

z Yet generating real value from information requires more than just an understanding of key functional processes

z In this age of the virtual enterprise, value comes from uniting centers of information to gain both functional and cross-functional views of your business

z It also comes from being able to more effectively assess your operational effectiveness, optimize customer relationships, optimize e-business and empower the supply chain.

An Analytical Application should solve a business question regardless of system boundaries, department

boundaries and company boundaries.

(22)

Status until SAP BW 3.1 Content

‰ SAP BW Content and SAP BW Technology was always delivered together with SAP BW

‰ “Pure” Business Content releases (SAP BW 2.1C, SAP BW 3.1 Content) required a full upgrade of the BW System at the customer site

‰ Business Content was often released in Support Packages, e.g. for 3.0B in SP 2

‰ BW Support Package included BW Technology corrections

and Content object corrections

(75)

New Situation

From SAP BW 3.1 Content onward, SAP BW Business Content will be delivered as a separate Software Component “BI Content Add-On”.

‰ Separate Support Packages for SAP BW Business Content corrections

‰ Approx. 3 Add-Ons between technology BW Releases are

planned

(76)

Benefits of Business Content as an Add-On

‰ Always use of the newest content.

‰ The duration of the upgrade is reduced to one to two hours, as the Add-On includes only content-relevant parts.

‰ Starting with the BI Content 3.2 Add-On, a technical upgrade of BW systems is no longer necessary as only content-relevant objects are imported.

‰ SAP BW Business Content developments and enhancements are available at shorter intervals.

‰ Changes in the Support Package procedures – separation of Support Packages for the SAP BW Technology and SAP BW Content – permit independent imports and tests of Support Packages.

‰ The Add-On release will be available for download from the SAP

Service Marketplace, which eliminates time for delivery and

customs duties.

SAP BW Business Content Activation

Î Before SAP BW Business Content can be used productively, it

has to be “activated” !!!

(87)

SAP Business Content Delivery - Version

Objects of the Business Information Warehouse are run in versions to be able to edit, execute and deliver different characteristics for an object in parallel.

The objects of the Business Content are delivered in version D(elivery) Changes are store in M(odified) version; Data is stored in A(ctive) objects An upgrade of the Business Content does not affect the objects which are in productive use!

M(odified) A(ctive)

D(elivery) 1 1

(88)

Business Content Objects Particularity

Most of the delivered Content Objects dispose of:

A -Version = active D -Version = delivered M -Version = modified Exceptions:

z Transferstructures do not have D-versions, they have shadow tables z Roles do not have D-Versions

A-version = SAP_BWC_* (only for customer systems relevant) D-version = SAP_BW_* (will be delivered)

Only A version objects are exported from the development system

These objects are imported into the target system into either the A-Version or M-Version, depending on the object type. The M -Version objects are activated after import. Examples are:

A -Version : Currency translation type, InfoObject Catalog

(89)

SAP Business Content Delivery - Upgrade

An Upgrade to take advantage of the new features:

z Improved or enhanced information model z New information model

Upgrading BW Business Content corresponds to a functional upgrade:

z No effect on the complete Business Content with all information models

z Can be performed selectively (see step-by-step …)

(90)

How to activate a new Version of BW BCT ?

Two Transfer Methods

The customer can compare the new content with the active customer version and either “install” the new version or “merge” it with the customer version.

Install = The SAP BW Business Content in the A -Version will be overwritten completely

(a copy of the new Version is inserted), changes/modification which were done

to the prior SAP BW Business Content will be lost completely.

Customizing of SAP BW Business Content

…. SAP BW Business Content doesn’t fit to the requirements ?

…. What happens when SAP BW Business Content has to be adjusted ?

…. Will adjustments to standard delivered BW Business Content influence future update facilities of BW Business Content ?

…. What has to be considered when planning customizing to BW

Business Content ?

(97)

Customizing of SAP BW Business Content

c An upgrade of the Business Content does not affect the objects which are in productive use ! To benefit from a new version of SAP BW Business Content, the meta data have to be reactivated with the new version of Business Content.

d SAP BW Business Content is easily extensible to adapt it to own requirements !

e Customizing of SAP BW Business Content has, except some exceptions, no influence on future update facilities !

f Exception: BW Business Content Objects with no “match”

functionality: copy the relevant Business Content Objects into a new namespace before customizing !

g Business Content versioning is an ongoing maintenance

consideration with each new SAP BW release
