Teaching and Learning

Strategy: The teaching strategy involves the use of lectures, tutorials, independent learning, class discussions andformative assessment as appropriate. Additionally, learners will also have access to web based support. The module will utilise journal articles to explore current techniques and strategies within Business Process Management. This module is suitable for blended delivery. Techniques such as flipped classroom and online videos showing step by step instructions, links to extra material available on the Internet and Moodle forum may be used. Learners may also use collaborative tools for the development of the project. The continuous assessment can be done though online Moodle quiz and the practical work submitted online on Moodle.

Learning Environment: Learning will take place in a classroom/lab environment with access IT resources. Learners will have access to library resources, both physical and electronic and to faculty outside of the classroom where required. Module materials will be placed on Moodle, the College’s virtual learning environment.

Module Description: The module aims to: • Introduce students to key concepts and approaches to business process management and improvement. • The main focus of this module is both understanding and designing business processes. • Students will learn how to identify, document, model, assess, and improve core business processes. • Students will be introduced to process design principles. The way in which information technology can be used to manage, transform, and improve business processes is discussed. • Students will be exposed to challenges and approaches to organisational change, domestic and offshore outsourcing, and inter-organisational processes.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Business Process Management - Model business processes - Benchmark business processes performance - Assess business processes performance - Design business process improvements.

LO2 Understand the role and potential of IT to support business process management.

LO3 Understand the challenges of business process change and how to support business process change. LO4 Understand different approaches to business process modeling and improvement.

LO5 Understand the challenges and risks concerning business process outsourcing, especially those dealing with ethnic cultural differences from offshore engagements.

LO6 Use basic business process modeling tools.

LO7 Simulate simple business processes and use simulation results in business process analysis. Pre-requisite learning
