EL TEJON SCHOOL

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of El Tejon School is to provide a program

that meets the individual educational needs of each student

in a safe and positive environment with the goal of preparing

each student to be a confident and productive citizen.

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

Phone Messages to Students: The office staff would like to be able to honor parent requests to get messages to students; however, to do so interrupts instruction and is not in the best interest of students. If there is a true emergency, we will, of course, accommodate your needs. Students should be given directions regarding after-school appointments, sports practices or any changes in after-school transportation arrangements prior to leaving for school in the morning. The practice of delivering messages, particularly at the end of the school day, is also extremely disruptive to classroom instruction.

Bus Passes: Bus passes may be issued to students who bring a signed note from parents. A bus pass will only be given allowing students to get off their regular bus at a different stop. El Tejon buses are loaded to capacity and have no extra seating. For this reason, a bus pass will not be issued allowing anyone to ride a bus other than his/her normally assigned bus. Please keep this in mind when making after-school arrangements.

Requests for Make-up Work: If the student is absent less than three days, the student is to request makeup work from the teacher when the student returns to class. Students will be allowed two days for each day absent to submit makeup work. Students may make arrangements with classmates to call them in the evening to share what assignments and activities occurred during the day(s) he/she was absent. The school office may not always be able to honor phone or written requests from parents for lists of assignments.

Picking up Students: Students will only be released to parents or guardian or the persons listed as emergency contacts on the student's emergency card. Parents/guardians wishing to pick up their children before regular dismissal time must check in with the office. It is very important that parents carefully consider their choice of emergency contact and provide the school with a local resident to contact. Teachers will not release a child to anyone without written authorization from the office.

(2)

Students Staying After School: Students must have written permission from parents to stay after school for any reason. Students without written permission will be sent home on the bus! Students are not allowed to wait on campus for sports at Tejon Fields. Students must go to the Tejon Sports Field and wait with a coach or responsible adult. Students are not allowed to return to campus. El Tejon Staff is not responsible to supervise students after school hours.

Attendance: Attendance and participation in daily classroom activities is an essential part of the learning process. By law, parents are responsible for their children being in school every day during the school year. Excessive absences and tardiness may prevent the pupil from successfully meeting course requirements and may result in referral to the Kern County Truancy Reduction Program. State law requires school districts to document and maintain a record of the reason for daily absences. A telephone call to the office on the day of the absence is the easiest way to fulfill this requirement. If you are unable to call on the day of absence, send a note with your child when he/she returns. The note must contain the date and reason for absence.

Tardies: Students who arrive at school after the second bell at 8:30 a.m. are considered tardy.

Students who are late to school must first come to the office to check in and get a tardy pass to class. When a student arrives at school late, it not only disrupts classes, but this may also affect your child's attendance record. Attendance is taken during the first five minutes of the day and students who are late may inadvertently be marked absent. All tardies are recorded on a student's attendance record.

Accidents: In case of an accident that may require medical attention, the child is given first aid and every effort is made to contact the parent. For this reason, it is very important that you include local contacts who are available in case of an emergency and any change in personal or emergency information be reported to the office immediately.

The school carries accident insurance on all students which is SECONDARY to any other insurance held by parents. In the event of an accident the student should report the injury to the teacher or school office for the appropriate report to be completed. A claim form may be obtained from the school office should medical treatment be necessary. Medical or dental expense benefits will be paid for covered charges incurred by the insured student within 52 weeks of the date of the accident.

Personal Transportation: Parents who drive their children to school are requested not to drop students off early or pick them up late. If you leave for work early, arrangements need to be made for childcare -- there is no student supervisionat school prior to 8:10 a.m. Any parent who transports students to and from school activities must check with the school office regarding insurance liability requirements.

P.E. Excuses: A doctor's certified note is required in order for a student to be excused from physical education classes for more than three days due to health reasons. Law requires physical education classes for junior high students and no other excuses are acceptable.

(3)

those students who are determined eligible. Information regarding eligibility will be distributed on the first day of school.

Parent Participation: Our Parent Teacher Service Organization (P.T.S.O.) contributes a great deal to school site improvement, extra-curricular programs, and student motivation. PTSO meetings are held each month in the Library. All members of the school community are invited and encouraged to get involved. Parents are also encouraged to visit their child's classroom and donate time as a parent volunteer or classroom helper. Consult your child's teacher for details.

Personal Items at School: Toys, trading cards, radios, cassette and CD players, cameras and other valuable items should never be brought to school. There is always a chance they may be broken or stolen at school. The school is not responsible if this should happen. Students are forbidden to carry any item that may be considered dangerous, and may be suspended from school if they are in possession of any such item.

Problem Solving:

When there is a problem at school, the following procedure is suggested:

1. First, discuss the problem with the teacher or other adult involved in the incident. 2. Then, if necessary, arrange a joint meeting with the parent, teacher, and principal.

Please do not expect a conference when the instructor is in a teaching situation! The instructor's first obligation is to the class in session. Please arrange a time with the teacher when full attention can be given as well as records and reports shown and discussed. The principal is also available on a regular basis, both in person and on the telephone.

Textbooks: All textbooks are furnished to students by the school district. Care of textbooks is the responsibility of the student! Students will be required to pay for lost or damaged texts or library books. Damage to textbooks may include water damage, writing in the book, torn or worn corners on the cover, and overall damages that requires repair. It is advised that parents and students check the condition of textbooks when they are assigned at the beginning of the year to prevent problems at the end of the year. Under existing law, a school district whose real or personal property is damaged or improperly returned by a pupil may withhold the grades, diploma, and transcripts of the pupil until the district is properly compensated.

Visitors: Every person who visits the school campus must sign in at the school office and receive a "Visitors Pass". We need to be aware of who is on the school grounds at all times!

When friends or relatives come to visit your family, please do not send them to school to visit.

Parents are always welcome to visit and volunteer in classes, and to discuss their student with the teacher. It is important, however, that such visits do not interrupt the instruction of the class. Please make prior arrangements with the school. Teachers may also be available to meet with parents before and after school by appointment.

Graduation Ceremony, Trip and Activities: Eighth grade students who do not maintain satisfactory attendance, discipline, an overall 2.0 cum GPA, and have no more than 4 F’s on their report card for the entire year may be excluded from the graduation ceremony, trip and special activities. Parents will be notified if their child is in jeopardy of not participating in these events.

(4)

Field Trips: Field trips at every grade level are enriching experiences that add to the academic curriculum and are considered a privilege. Any student who has been involved in inappropriate or unsafe behavior at school may be excluded from a class field trip in order to ensure the safety and well being of all students. Field trip chaperones must ride the school bus in order to adequately supervise students. Private vehicle transportation and meeting classes at the field trip site may not be allowed. A universal field trip form giving permission to allow students to attend any field trip with the district is included in the Parent Handbook. Any field trips out side of the district will be sent home by the teacher individually.

Extra Curricular Activities :

No students may remain after school unless they are directly involved in a school sponsored activity. There are to be NO spectators. There are no provisions for looking after younger brothers and sisters - - they must go home on the bus. Students staying after school for Little League, Soccer or other Club sports must stay at the sports field. Students will not be allowed to stay on campus after hours without supervision.

Special activities, events and competitions available to El Tejon School students may include the following:

Student Council: El Tejon ASB is run by Mrs. Pennella. Student council consists of elected officers and classroom representatives. Student Council is responsible for planning and organizing dances, fun days, and other special events, activities and celebrations.

.

Dances: Junior High dances are generally held during the afternoon on a school day. A student's eligibility to attend a dance is determined by his/her academic standing and behavior. If an after-school dance is held, the district will be unable to provide transportation home for students. Therefore, parents would be responsible for arranging transportation for their students who are eligible to stay after school for a dance.

SCHOLASTIC ACHIEVEMENT

Report Cards: Report cards are designed to give you a good idea of what your child is accomplishing in class, but a report card can never give a parent all of the information they may need regarding their child's progress in school. We hope you will attend parent-teacher conferences which are held at the end of the first quarter, and that you will maintain ongoing contact with your child's teacher. Teachers are always willing to meet with parents to discuss concerns and the progress of their child.

Grading: Reports of scholarship, effort and citizenship are given to parents four times a year at the end of each quarter. Reports of unsatisfactory student progress are sent home at mid-quarter and other times during the year if needed. Report card grades are reported as follows:

Grading Scale

Middle School Weekly Homework/Testing Schedule

Homework is a nightly exercise in practice. Math and reading will be assigned every night of the week. Sixth through eighth grades should expect 60-90 minutes of homework on Monday

through Thursday nights. On occasion, students will have math homework to complete over the weekend, and/or long-term assignments such as Science Fair projects, book reports, or social studies projects. Teachers will work together to ensure long-term projects do not overlap. Quizzes may be scheduled on days other than the assigned testing day. However, teachers will try to adhere to the testing day schedule.

Homework for each subject should be worked on every night to ensure homework is completed on time.

Honor Roll: Students in Grades 6 through 8 with high academic achievement will be honored at assemblies to be held at the end of each quarter. Students who have made the "A" Honor Roll or Principal’s Honor Roll three out of four grading periods will receive special recognition and awards at the end of the school year.

Principal's Honor Roll = G.P.A. of 4.00 Honor Roll = G.P.A. of 3.00 – 3.99

Attendance Awards: Students who maintain perfect attendance are recognized each quarter. Awards are presented in individual classrooms. Perfect Attendance Awards are also given at the end of the year.

CODE OF CONDUCT

PHILOSOPHY

The Board of Trustees of the El Tejon Unified School District believes that each student will be

given every opportunity to succeed by maintaining a safe and orderly environment at the school.

No student may stop the teacher from teaching or the class from learning. The conduct of

students attending the school must establish an educational climate conducive to the

enhancement of educational opportunities for students and the promotion of learning.

EL TEJON SCHOOL RULES

1. Students will be on time, will attend school regularly, and will complete all academic tasks.

2. Students will follow all rules and directives by staff. 3. Students will keep hands, feet, and objects to themselves.

4. Students will respect each other, staff members, visitors, and school property. 5. Profanity and abusive language will not be tolerated.

6. Electronic devices are not allowed at school.

(6)

El Tejon School is not responsible for any electronic devises, including cell phones, if damaged, lost or stolen.

If there is a violation of the electronics/cell phone policy, the device will be confiscated and stored in the office to be picked up by a parent/guardian. The second offence may result in suspension.

Rules and regulations are established to maintain an atmosphere conducive to learning. Through classroom and playground rules, school personnel are helping students learn that all society is governed by rules and the purpose for rules is to ensure the safety and well being of all people, in this case, our students and staff. A Discipline Report may be issued to students who do not follow the rules, and appropriate consequences will be given.

Those students whose behavior results in frequent Discipline Reports, assignments to Focus or detention, or suspensions may be excluded from field trips, special events and activities and athletic events. This will be at the discretion of the Principal in consultation with school personnel, the student and the parents.

Individual classroom rules are determined by the teacher. These rules are posted conspicuously in each room and are reviewed regularly with students.

EL TEJON UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT DRESS CODE

The El Tejon Unified School District Mission Statement strongly supports the philosophy that our students will be provided with a quality education in a safe, secure environment. The enforcement of the dress code is the responsibility of all ETUSD employees.

The Board and administration reserve the right to declare any mode of dress that in their

estimation inhibits the educational process or threatens the safety and protection of all students, as unacceptable. If students are dressed in an unacceptable manner, parents will be notified and corrective measures must be taken before the student will be allowed to return to class.

Excessively large trousers, pants, and overalls may not be worn. All trousers and pants must be worn at the waist. Belt ends may not hang down. Sagging pants are unacceptable.

Bus Referral = 4 points Suspension = 10 points

A student will be excluded from any extra curricular activity after reaching 10 points. Once 10 points has been obtained, the student has the option of fulfilling a behavior contract in order to remove the points.

BUS TRANSPORTATION

All school rules are in effect when riding the school buses. Students transported in a school bus shall be under the authority of, and responsible directly to, the driver of the bus. Violations of rules will result in bus referrals. Repeated bus referrals will cost students the privilege of riding the school buses. Video cameras are installed in our school buses and are used on a random basis to observe student behavior.

EMERGENCY SCHOOL DISMISSAL

August 2011

Dear Parents/Guardians:

School closures due to snow and/or ice, flooding, or power outages, which result in loss of water and heat, are an ongoing challenge for our mountain communities.

In addition to the emergency phone chain, the district website is a key source of information regarding weather delays and closures. This information can be accessed at http://www.el-tejon.org then clicking on the link “School Closures”. Local TV stations KGET 17 (local cable channel 3) and KBAK 29 (local cable channel 7) broadcast school delay and closure information continuously during their morning newscast, as does KUZZ radio (AM 55 and FM107.9). It is crucial that parents confirm that school is opening and busses are running on schedule BEFORE leaving a child unattended at school or the bus stop when adverse weather conditions are present.

If conditions warrant, the decision to send students home early is carefully considered, but often must be made within a short period of time. While every attempt is made to reach parents through the emergency phone chair, it is often not possible to establish contact if they are “off the hill,” or telephone service is out. District employees share a common concern that each child has a safe place to go and a procedure to follow in the event students are released early and a parent or other responsible adult is not at home when the child arrives.

To ensure the safety and well-being of your child, it is crucial that you establish a family plan to be followed in the event that you are not at home when an unforeseen emergency occurs. This plan should include instructions and arrangements for an early dismissal or delayed start of school. Your child should be aware of this alternate plan in the event that you are not home or unable to be reached.

I urge parents to be prepared before the need arises. Please take time to address this important concern now and review you plan on a regular basis so that each family member is familiar with how to respond to an emergency or an unexpected school closure.

Each school site has an emergency response plan that is accessible by visiting the district website at:

http://www.el-tejon.org then clicking on the link “District Office” on the left hand side of the page.

Sincerely,

Internet Access Policy

The Internet is an electronic highway connecting thousands of computers all over the world and millions of individual subscribers. We believe that this technology will help propel today’s schools into the information age by allowing students and staff access to electronic mail, college/university and other libraries, information and news from a variety of sources and research institutions, software of all types, and discussion groups on a wide variety of topics. We believe that the Internet is an essential tool that will facilitate life long learning and will expand each student’s knowledge base. The El Tejon Unified School District is pleased to make access to this valuable resource available to students and staff.

Internet access is coordinated through a complex association of government agencies, private industry, and regional and state networks. However, there is no agency or company "in charge" of the Internet. With so many computers and users participating, it is inevitable that some of the material available on the Internet will not be of educational value in the school setting. We have taken precautions to restrict access to inappropriate materials; however, users are advised that some material on the Internet may be defamatory, inaccurate, obscene, profane, sexually oriented, threatening, racially offensive, or illegal. We do not condone the use of these materials or permit them in the school environment. We need the cooperation of students, staff, and parents to insure that the valuable information and interaction on this worldwide network are not outweighed by the possibility of access to inappropriate materials. Outside of school, families bear the responsibility for the same guidance of Internet use as they exercise with other information sources such as television, telephones, radio, movies, and other possibly offensive media.

Before anyone may take advantage of the Internet access we provide, we will require that they receive appropriate orientation and instruction. All users will be required to sign (and minor students must have their parents/guardians sign) an Internet User Agreement. In addition, all users must review this Internet Policy, the Rules for Internet Etiquette, and the list of Prohibited Uses, and agree to abide by them. Access to the Internet is a privilege and it will be withheld or withdrawn from anyone who fails to abide by this Policy and the applicable rules.

Policy Adopted: 10/3/95 El Tejon Unified School District Lebec, California

NETIQUETTE

RULES FOR INTERNET ETIQUETTE

Be Polite. Never send, or encourage others to send, abusive messages.

Use Appropriate Language. Remember that you are representative of not only yourself, but also your school district, on a publicly accessible system. You may be alone with your computer, but what you say and do can be viewed globally! Never swear, use vulgarities, ethnic or racial slurs, or any other inappropriate language. Illegal activities of any kind are strictly forbidden.

Privacy. Remember that revealing your own phone number and address can result in unwanted intrusions of your privacy and should be viewed in the same light as a public listing in a telephone directory.

Electronic Mail. Electronic mail (e-mail) is not guaranteed to be private. Messages relating to, or in support of illegal or unethical activities, must be reported to the District.

Recommended Practices:

Use accurate and descriptive titles for your articles and subject lines for your e-mail. Tell people what it is about before they read it.

(11)

Remember that if you post to multiple groups, specify all groups in a single message.

Be brief. Fewer people will bother to read a long message.

Minimize spelling errors and make sure your message is easy to understand and read. Forgive the spelling and grammatical errors of others.

Remember that humor and satire are very often misinterpreted. Post only to groups you know.

Cite references for any facts you present. Keep signatures brief.

Remember that all network users are human beings. Don't "attack" correspondents; persuade them with facts.

PROHIBITED INTERNET PRACTICES

The Internet may not be used for any purpose which conflicts with the goals of the Internet Policy of the El Tejon Unified School District or for illegal or unethical purposes.

You must not:

A. Use the system without signing the Internet User Agreement;

B. Send or receive messages that are likely to be obscene, pornographic, racist, sexist, illegal, unethical or inappropriate in language for the school environment. The District reserves the right to determine, according to District standards, whether any message violates this prohibition;

C. Send a message with someone else's name as author or send a message that is inconsistent with the school's code of conduct or practices;

D. Send any material in violation of any federal or state law or regulation. This includes non-exclusively copyrighted material, threatening or obscene material, or material protected by trade secret;

E. Impair or damage District system operations or disrupt the use of the system by another user; F. Share your individual account and/or password;

G. Use the network for financial or commercial gain; H. Vandalize the data of another user;

I. Gain unauthorized access to resources or entities; J. Invade the privacy of individuals;

K. Use an account owned by another user; L. Post anonymous messages.

Penalty for Inappropriate Use:

Inappropriate use will result in your losing access to the Internet. It may also be subject to disciplinary action.

Content Guidelines:

1. Students will be allowed to produce materials for electronic publication on the Internet. Network administrators will monitor these materials to ensure compliance with content standards. The content of student materials is constrained by the following restrictions:

2. No personal information about a student will be allowed. This includes home telephone numbers and addresses as well as information regarding the specific location of any student at any given time. 3. All Student work must be signed with the student’s full name.

4. Individuals in pictures, movies or sound recordings may be identified only by initials. Absolutely no first or last names may appear in reference to individuals in any image, movie, or sound recording. 5. No text, image, movie or sound that contains pornography, profanity, obscenity, or language that

TRUANCY NOTIFICATION

The school year is beginning soon. As you may already know, school attendance is required for all children ages six through eighteen as required by CA ED Code.

We will monitor student attendance closely. State law states that absences are excused only if the child is ill or there is a death in the immediate family (1 – 3 day limit). All other absences are unexcused unless validated with a doctor’s note. Any tardy over 30 minutes, or taking a student out of school early for over 30 minutes, except for medical reasons, is also unexcused. If you child has three unexcused absences and/or tardies, he or she will be considered truant. After the forth unexcused absence or tardy, you may be required to meet with the S.A.R.B. for Truancy review, Attendance Probation, and/or possible sheriff citation resulting in a court appearance and a fine.

Many parents are unaware that going “out of town” with their children during school is an unexcused absence, as are “family emergencies.” In both cases, planning ahead can avoid unexcused absences and possible prosecution by the Kern County District

Attorney’s Office. Some parents think that excusing absences as illnesses will solve the problem. It is our district’s policy that we may require a doctor’s note for three

consecutive days of absence. If we feel that your child is absent excessively (over 10%), we can require a doctor’s note for every absence. It is our hope that during the summer you have planned and organized so that school is a number-one priority in your family. Make carpooling arrangements, plan trips for holidays and vacations, and have a back-up person available to take your child to school if you are ill or otherwise unable to do so.

If you must go out of town for 5 or more days, have your child complete a Short-Term Work Contract, which requires independent study during the period school is missed with the work turned in upon return to school. Teachers need one week’s notice to prepare required materials.

(15)

Student Birthdays

Please do not send classroom treats on birthdays. If you would like to celebrate your child’s birthday, please consider donating a book to the classroom (birthday bookplates are available in the office) or sending pencils for each student in the class.

At the beginning of each month, there will be a special birthday table for students who have birthdays during that month. The school will celebrate each student with a birthday cupcake.

Phone Numbers/Automated Phone Calls

El Tejon Unified School District uses an automated phone call system to alert parents as to school information such as school delays. In addition to your home phone, the system will call the alternate phone number of your choice. You will want to add a number, in addition to your home phone, where you can be reached in the event of an early out scheduled due to weather, etc.

It is important to notify the school office if your child’s office of any new phone numbers.

Bus Routes

In order to keep our students safe and because of limited bus seats, all students

must ride to and from school on their assigned bus and bus stop. Bus passes will be not

issued for alternate bus routes/stops. If you child has an after school activity, arrangements must be made by the parent, ahead of time.

Lost and Found

(16)

Automated Phone Call Contact

From time-to-time, ETUSD sends out an automated phone call, to keep

parents notified of important information, such as snow delays, important

events, etc.

The automated dialer will automatically call the listed home phone number

of students. However, there may be a need to notify parents in the afternoon

of emergency events. For example, a fast moving storm may develop,

making it necessary to send students home early. This is a rare event, but

the District wants to be prepared and be able to notify parents in a timely

manner.

Please provide us with a phone number, where you can be notified, in the

event of an emergency.

The automated caller will call

both

your home phone number as well as the

automated phone call contact number you provide.
