Lyndi Graff, Brooklyn Smith, Ellen Stoll and Hailea Weiss have been named as the student speakers for the Com-mencement Ceremony to be held at the Northwestern High School new gymnasium on Friday, May 22 at 8:00 P.M. The Scholarship/Faculty Committee selects the four student speakers from the senior honor students.
Lyndi Graff is the daughter of Joel and Rhonda Graff of Iron River. She plans to attend the College of St. Scholasti-ca and will major in Psychology.
Brooklyn Smith is the daughter of Sandi and Shane Nelson of Maple and Kyle and Elaine Smith of Mosinee. She plans to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison and major in English.
Ellen Stoll is the daughter of Frederick and Ardeen Stoll of Maple. She plans to attend Gustavus Adolphus College. She will be in-volved in the music department and is consid-ering a double major in music and another course of study.
Hailea Weiss is the daughter of Scott and Lisa Weiss of Iron River. She will be attending Michigan Technological University and will ma-jor in Chemical Engineering.

Nicholas Johnson son of Jeffrey and Susan Johnson of Poplar has been selected by the Scholarship/ Faculty Committee to attend Badger Boys State at Ripon College this summer. Nicholas is being spon-sored by the Hanson-Maki Post No. 506 of the Ameri-can Legion, Iron River. Nicholas will participate in workshops and seminars on state government. He will also participate in mock elections and hear speeches by several state officials.
The purpose of the conference is to promote a better understanding of how the democratic government works. Nicholas has been active in honor roll, Foot-ball, Band, Jazz Band, Choir, Men’s Choir, Pep Band, SADD and Show Choir. District residents are invited to support this worthy project by making a donation to the two organizations or supporting one of the annual fundraisers.
Daisy Mack, daughter of Andrew and Amy Mack, Lake Nebagamon, has been selected by the Scholar-ship/Faculty Committee to attend Badger Girls State on the University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh Campus in June. The Iron River Rebekah Lodge #192 is spon-soring Daisy.
The purpose of Badger Girls is to prepare girls of high school age in Wisconsin for citizenship in a modern world, to teach the principles of democracy in a repre-sentative government, to provide an opportunity for living together as self-governing citizens, and to instill a love of country and a desire to preserve the funda-mental features of our form of government as found-ed by our forefathers. Daisy has been active in honor roll, Art Club, Choir, Student Council, Track, Volley-ball, FCCLA, Math League and is the President of the National Honors Society.
The 27th Annual Academic Awards Celebration was held on March 25, 2015. Each quarter students who earn a 4.0 GPA are placed on the
High Honors list, students between 3.5 and 3.99 are on the Honors list and students between 3.25 and 3.49 are put on the Honorable Mention list. Academic Awards are
pre-sented to those students who have demonstrated their suc-cess by being on the High Hon-ors, HonHon-ors, or Honorable Men-tion lists for four consecutive quarters. This year, 140 stu-dents were honored and after the award presentations, the students and parents were invit-ed to enjoy pizza and soda.

Northwestern High School is in the process of planning its 27th Annual
Chemical-Free Graduation Party, “Celebration 2015.” The party will be on graduation night, Friday, May 22, from 10:30 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
Students will enjoy a night full of enter-taining activities and prizes are given away through out the night. If you are interested in donating to this event, any donations of merchandise, gift certificates or cash are being accepted at the Northwestern High School Of-fice. Each student will also be given a list of contributors in their gift bag.
VOLUNTEERS ARE STILL NEEDED If you have an interest in helping with this party, please contact Renee Priem at 715-363-2434, ext. 2000. Workers are still needed for decorating, clean-up, and supervision.
On October 27, 2011, Craig Hillier, a well-known speaker, visited Northwestern High School to present a 45 minute assembly for the students that focused on resilience and respect. After the assembly, Mr. Hillier worked with 9th and 10th grade students on
co-operation and then with 11th and 12th grade students on leadership and positive school
environment. The students responded well to Mr. Hillier’s presentations. He will return on November 29, 2011 to work with the leaders of each school organization, sport, and activity to focus on leadership qualities.

The WIAA Scholar/Athlete award was established in 1984 by the WIAA. Nominees must have cumu-lative GPA of 3.0 or higher based on a 4.0 scale and have earned at least 4 varsity letters through WIAA sanc-tioned sports.
An athlete’s individual and team accomplishments, other co-curricular activities, and community participation are also taken into con-sideration. This year’s winners have an outstanding combination of all those things.

Northwestern Award
The Duane Lindgren Northwestern Award has been memorialized in the name of Duane Lindgren, who had been a school board member for 13 years at the time of his death in Au-gust 1987. The award is a fitting me-morial to Mr. Lindgren who gave much of himself to our school and community. The award goes to sen-iors who have best exemplified the "Spirit of Northwestern". This award is based on their contributions to make Northwestern an excellent school.
Mr. Steve High, principal of North-western High School, presented the Award Medals to Heather Montavon and David Rautio at the Senior Honor Banquet. It also carries a $500.00 grant to be used at the winner's dis-cretion and is presented after gradua-tion.

The Wisconsin Student Immunization Law now requires proof of Varicella (chickenpox) immunity for grades K-12. A child is considered compli-ant with the law if a vaccination date is provided or it is indicated that the child has had chickenpox disease. Students 13 years of age or older without a prior history of chickenpox disease or a prior history of Varicella vaccine before age 13 require 2 doses of Varicella vaccine. Please inform the school nurse/health assistant with written verification of this information before the end of the first week of school in September 2014. Waivers are available for medical, religious, or personal conviction reasons.
The Douglas County Health Department continues to offer free immunization clinics at the Superior’s Government Center (1316 N. 14th St.,
Ste. 324). The first Wednesday of each month from 1:00-5:00p.m. Please call (715)395-1304 for further information.
Children Screening Clinic Children Screening Clinics will be held during the month of August for children 4 months to 18 years, sponsored by the Douglas County Department of Health and Human Services, Public Health Nursing Unit. The free childhood screening program offers phys-ical assessment, vision and hearing check, laboratory tests when appropriate, immunizations, developmental screening. The physphys-icals are conducted in compliance with all state and school regulations.
Call the Public Health Nursing Unit at 715-395-1304 to make an appointment for a screening.

Summer School Sessions

The Maple Board of Education recently selected Dr. Sara L. Croney as the District Administrator.Dr. Croney will move into her new position upon the June 30, 2015 retirement of Mr. Gregg Lundberg, the current District Administrator, who has been employed with the School District of Ma-ple for the past 30 years.
Dr. Croney most recently held the same position as District Administrator for the Oconto Unified School District for 13 years and prior to that was the District Administrator for the School District of Seneca for four years. In addition, Dr. Croney has extensive administrative experience as Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment, Elementary Principal, Title I, New Teacher Mentor, and Gifted and Talented Coordinators as well as 11 years professional teaching experience as a high school English, Speech, and Drama teacher.
Dr. Croney and her husband Doug have been married for 35 years and have raised five children. She enjoys downhill and water skiing, travel, dancing, theater – both performing and watching, read-ing, quiltread-ing, watercolor paintread-ing, singread-ing, 5K runs, fitness trainread-ing, and walking.

Mr. Mark Carlson has been named as the Northwestern High School Principal for the 2015-16 school year by the School District of Maple Board of Education as a result of the upcom-ing retirement of Mr. Steven High, who has been the NHS Principal for the past 10 years and an employee in the School District of Maple for a total of 22 years..
52nd Building Construction House For Sale
The Building Construction Class at Northwestern High School is working on completion of the 52nd house to be constructed since 1964. The home will be sold to the highest bidder as has been done in the past. Bids will be accepted until 4:00 p.m. on Monday, June 9, 2014.
This year's house measures 28' X 48' with three bedrooms, two full bathrooms, living room, kitchen and dining room.
Interested bidders, desiring more detailed information on this house, may request it by either calling 715-363-2431, printing it off the school district website at www.nw-tigers.org, or by picking up a Bid Information Sheet from the District Office located in the Northwestern High School building. The minimum bid for this year’s house is $62,500.
The house will be open for inspection the evening of graduation, May 22, from approximately 9:15 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.; and on any weekday after May 23, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., except Memorial Day.

The house must be paid for in full before removal from the school district premises. Removal must be no later than Friday, July 24, 2015.
