Not so many years ago, if there was a ma-jor airport incident, an agent from the na-tional investigation office would travel to the airport, grab the tape from the record-er and bring it back to the office. Today there is a demand for much more cost- and time- efficient routines.
Recent years has seen architectures where all recorded data is copied, continuously or scheduled, to some central storage. The cost of this is not just the cost of double storage, but also the bandwidth of trans-ferring all the data.
With the requirements on recording screen images at high frame rates, the data vol-ume generated by ground based recording systems has increased significantly.

Recent requirement on ground based ATC recording systems for recording high reso-lution screen images, at high frame rates, - has a significant impact on data volumes generated.

Access what you need when you need
There has been a tendency over the last few decades to think that storage capaci-ties and data transfer bandwidths are the key factors to handling the extreme amount of digital data being generated.
But today’s challenge is no longer data capture, storage capacities and data trans-fer bandwidths.
The real challenge is making sense of the vast amount of data.
This applies also to data recorded in relation to ATC. This is why Ricochet has
focused on simple and efficient replay, ex
-port and management of data.
For larger airports and for area control centers, this can be a tremendous amount of data per day and may generate a very high network load for continuous transfer.
Everything needs to be recorded, but only very small portions will ever be needed for replay and investigations. Therefore - why transport all the data over large distances?
This is not necessary in order to access the data. Data can be accessed for direct replay or downloading, just as quick and secure across sites and recorders, as it can be accessed from a local storage.
Although the Ricochet system supports pushing all the data to centralized storag-es, the latest generation replay, manage-ment and data extraction mechanisms has been designed to provide quick and easy data access - across recorders and across sites.

Capturing and storaging are core functions that are still as efficient and robust as ever, but completely new mechanisms have been designed for data access and retrieval. [1]
The process of replaying data recorded 30 days ago is exactly the same as playing data that is 5 seconds old - and the access is immediate in both cases.
RICOCHET ARCHITECTURE – Providing the user with seamless access
Integrated Replay and Data Management Ricochet’s client application provides system-wide access to replay and data extraction via one access point.
Channels recorded on different recorders are presented seamlessly to the user. The user needs no knowledge of the underlying sys-tem architecture to access any channel for replay.
Impound:
- The most effective and secure data extrac-tion. Select and securely transfer exactly what you need in one file.
Replay with Ricochet Impound Player, which provides the same quick and easy replay features as the main replay application.
Export:
- Export audio, video or text files of selected data with a few clicks.
Quarantine:
- Remotely control local copies of data, to protect from overwriting, for later investiga-tion.
Archive:
- On demand download of all channels for a selected time period.
Remote System Management and Administration
In the new generation Ricochet, the modu-lar architecture has been enhanced and im-proved, making it easy to create and main-tain a large, distributed system of Ricochet recording units.
Each individual unit can be remotely config-ured, monitored and administered from a centralized management workstation.
