2015 Indigenous Fellows Institute Application
Environmental Science, Natural Resources, Energy and Related Science Training Open to Tribal and Pacific Rim College and High School Faculty
June 8-12, 2015 Honolulu Community College, Honolulu, HI
2015 Indigenous Fellows Institute Theme Climate Change: its effects on Indigenous populations
Connecting Tribal and Pacific Rim Colleges to Improve Indigenous Environmental Technology Education
An NSF ATE funded project DUE #1204627
Background Information
The 2015 Indigenous Fellows Institute will be held at Honolulu Community College in Honolulu, Hawaii. This rigorous week-long faculty development opportunity will delve into Climate
Change: its effects on Indigenous populations. Participants will come away with significant experiences and material for new curriculum development and/or program enhancement. The college structure and operations are very similar between Tribal Colleges and Pacific Rim Colleges, and both Tribal colleges and Pacific Rim colleges cater to populations with strong cultural beliefs. The two types of institutions also face similar struggles. By linking Pacific Rim colleges to Tribal colleges, both types of institutions will benefit by sharing best practices in how to deal with the many unique issues they face as a result of their locations and student
demographics. During this 3-year NSF ATE project, three faculty development Institutes are being offered. The first Institute was held at Guam Community College in Guam in 2013, the second Institute was held at Fort Berthold Community College in New Town, ND in 2014, and the third and final Institute will be held at Honolulu Community College.
The week-long workshop will include: • Stipends for participants • Lodging and meals
• A half-day intensive program on Indigenous pedagogy • Presentations by research students
• Presentations by attending Fellows on their college/school/program
• Presentations on low-cast, hands-on, practical research projects that can be implemented locally
• Indigenous case studies
• Mini-grants for assistance in implementing curricular projects created based on experiences at the Institute.
All reasonable/allowable travel and expenses will be covered for accepted applicants, however please be aware of the following:
• It will take a significant amount of time to get to Hawaii. Therefore although the Institute dates are June 8-12, you will likely need to travel outside of those dates (although flight plans are negotiable with our travel agent).
o Depending on cost and availability, Pacific Rim colleges and/or high schools may be routed through Japan, and it is therefore recommended you have a Passport. • While major expenses will be covered up front (such as hotel and flight costs), there are
minor travel and meal expenses which will be covered on a reimbursement basis.
• Honolulu, HI is in the HAST Time Zone (Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time; UTC/GMT -10 hours).
• Proper Attire: A portion of the Indigenous Fellows Institute will be field work conducted outside, and some of the field trips will require some hiking. You will be going out rain or shine; you will be required to bring things such as raingear, appropriate footwear, a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses.
Selected individuals may be asked to present what they learned and how it improved their teaching during webinars and/or conferences following completion of the Institute.
