THE MYSTERY OF THE BLESSED TRINITY
Today we celebrate the solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. The Church sets aside this Sunday to focus our attention on the mystery of the Blessed Trinity, God who is one, but three persons - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The first reading from Deuteronomy emphasizes both God’s awesome greatness and amazing nearness. It might seem beyond belief, but the God of all creation speaks to us, protects us, and guides us. The second reading from Saint Paul’s Letter to the Romans describes how we are to relate to the three persons who are one God. We are led by the Spirit to meet God the Father as adopted children. Our adoption is such that we are even heirs with our brother, Christ, the second person of the Trinity, in whose sufferings we must also share. In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus speaks with his authority as God and sends us to teach and baptize in the name of the Trinity. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
The Most Holy Trinity
☺
ENTRANCE HYMN:
HOLY, HOLY,
HOLY
Verse 1. Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee:
Holy, Holy, Holy! Merciful and mighty, God in three Persons, blessed Trinity. Verse 2. Holy, Holy, Holy!
All the saints adore thee,
Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
Cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee,
Which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.
Verse 3 Holy, Holy, Holy! Though the darkness hide thee,
Though the eye made blind by sin thy glory may not see;
Only thou art holy; there is none beside thee,
Perfect in pow’r, in love, and purity.
FIRST READING: Deuteronomy
4:32-34, 39-40
Moses said to the people: “Ask now of the days of old, before your time, ever since God created man upon the earth; ask from one end of the sky to the other: Did anything so great ever happen before? Was it ever heard of? Did a people ever hear the voice of God speaking from the midst of fire, as you did, and live? Or did any god venture to go and take a nation for himself from the midst of another nation, by testings, by signs and wonders, by war, a with strong hand and outstretched arm, and by great terrors, all of which the Lord, your God, did for you in Egypt before your very eyes? This is why you must now know, and fix in your heart, that the Lord is God in the heavens above and on earth below, and that there is no other. You must keep his statutes and commandments that I enjoin on you today, that you and your children after you may prosper, and that you may have long life on the land which the Lord, your God, is giving you forever.
Thanks be to God.
RESPONSORIAL PSALM
Blessed the people the Lord has chosen,
chosen to be his own.
SECOND READING: Romans 8:14-17
Brothers and sisters: Those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received a Spirit of adoption, through whom we cry, “Abba, Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if only we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. Thanks be to God.
GOSPEL: Matthew 28:16-20
The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them. When they all saw him, they worshiped, but they
doubted. Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the
Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
NICENE CREED
I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten not made, consubstantial with the Father, through Him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, (all bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.
Mass Intentions
NICENE CREED Continued:
He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
COMMUNION HYMN: WE ARE MANY
PARTS
Refrain We are many parts, we are all one body, and the gifts we have we are given to share. May the Spirit of love make us one indeed;
one, the love that we share, One, our hope in despair, one,
the cross that we bear. Verse 1 God of all, we look to you,
we would be your servants true, Let us be your love to all the world. Refrain
Verse 2 So my pain is pain for you, in your joy is my joy, too;
All is brought together in the Lord. Refrain
Verse 3 All you seekers great and small, seek the greatest gift of all;
If you love, then you will know the Lord. Refrain

Think about it!
Life, for all its confrontations, is the art of
encounter. I have frequently called for the growth of a culture of encounter capable of transcending our differences and divisions. This means working to create a many-faceted polyhedron whose different sides form a variegated unity, in which the whole is greater than the part. The image of a polyhedron can represent a society where differences coexist, complementing, enriching and reciprocally
illuminating one another, even amid disagreements and reservations. Each of us can learn something from others. No one is useless and no one is expendable. This also means finding ways to include those on the peripheries of life. For they have another way of looking at things; they see aspects of reality that are invisible to others.
Pope Francis, Fratelli Tutti, #215
FEAST OF FAITH ‐ Liturgy and the Holy Trinity
The Trinity is the central mystery of our faith. We believe that God is one, yet three: total unity and rich diversity. God is not a monolith, but a dynamic community of persons, a perfect, loving harmony of three. And the liturgy is the work of the Trinity. We begin all our liturgical celebrations with the sign of the cross, a reminder of our Trinitarian baptism, and the simplest of all professions of our faith. We believe that God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and we gather in the name of this triune God. Throughout the Mass, we address our prayers to God the Father, through Christ our Lord, in the Spirit’s power. And the Father hears our prayer, transforming bread and wine into the Body and Blood of his Son by the Holy Spirit. The Church is “the sacrament of trinitarian communion” (Sacramentum Caritatis, 16). It is the Trinity who holds us together as well. In the words of Saint Cyprian, we are “a people made one by the unity of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit” (quoted in Sacramentum Caritatis, 16).

Mary, the Immaculate Conception
The dogma of the Immaculate Conception, that from the moment of her conception Mary was free from original sin, has a long and controversial history. Remember that Mary is referred to as the New Eve. Eve did not have original sin initially. In Genesis 3:15, scripture speaks of a woman whose seed will crush the serpent. This is held to be prophesy of the coming of the New Eve. The dogma of the Immaculate Conception draws on the scriptural recognition of Mary as “Full of Grace” (Lk 1:28) “Full of grace” literally means “completely graced” or “fully favored.” Fully favoring Mary, God’s grace kept her free from personal sin during her entire life. Saint Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) tells us that God so prepares those chosen for a particular task that they are made capable of fulfilling it. Since God chose Mary to be the mother of Jesus, there is no doubt that God made her worthy of that role. No one who had sinned would have been worthy to be Mother of God. Therefore, God kept Mary free of all personal sin. Johannes Duns Scotus (c. 1265-1308) maintained that Mary obtained her son’s greatest redemption when he preserved her from all sin, including original sin, from the moment of her conception. In 1854, Pope Pius IX made belief in the Immaculate Conception of Mary the first pronouncement (of two to this day) of fallibility. In 1858, our Blessed Mother appeared to Bernadette Soubirous at Lourdes, at which time Mary declared to Bernadette “I am the Immaculate Conception.” The doctrine was officially approved in 1870.
