A letter from the Pastor
Dear Friends,
It is with much sadness that I write my very last bulletin article to you. You see, after 50 years in ministry to the church, it is time to retire! 50 years is a long journey…but it is a blessed journey that I have been on since I was a young, music loving kid! And, except for the 5 years when I was attending USC in Los Angeles, my life centered around the church of Chicago! I would like to quote from one of my favorite hymns to outline my goodbye and thanks:
“No storm can shake my inmost calm While to that rock I’m clinging;
Since love is lord of heaven and earth, How can I keep from singing?”
My journey began at Saint James in Arlington Heights and continued at Saint Clement’s Church (15 years). at Saint Margaret Mary Church in Lomita (5 years), then at Saint Josaphat Church in Lincoln Park (14 years), at Saint Nicholas (2 years), at Saint James in Arlington Heights (7 more years), at Saint Michaels in Old Town (10 years total) and finally, here at Saint John Berchmans (4 years). And, it is SJB that I hold closest to my heart. HOW CAN I KEEP FROM SINGING? So, I simply want to say THANK YOU for the opportunity to share my passion and gift of music with you. I had a great time here! You supported my from the beginning and throughout with your volunteer hours, your kind words, your smiles, your AMAZING SINGING, your attendance at concerts and events and Taize Prayer. It was so good to see! And, frankly, it embraced me knowing your love and support.

THANK YOU to an amazing Staff, both in the church and the school. Thanks to Father Wayne for trusting and giving me the opportunity to come to SJB; thanks to Father Marshall for reigniting my passion and inner faith. Thanks to Gail Grochowiak for doing the linens each week; to Lucile Figueroa for helping with the Altar Server robes and other things; to Claudia Zelasko for the awesome floral offerings;
for Nancy Krause for her floral expertise; to John Parizek for helping with Art and Environment; my choirs (AWESOME) and cantors (WOW) and singers and instrumentalists. Thanks to the many volunteers that helped me with church and school projects; thanks to the Altar Servers, Lectors, Commentators, Eucharistic Ministers, Mass Coordinators, Art and Environment Team, Holiday Pops singers and staff…….it took a village and you were there with me. HOW CAN I KEEP FROM SINGING?
Most importantly, …..thanks to each and everyone of you! Great things happen at Saint John Berchmans. You, my friends, are evidence of that. Continue your spirit and love and support. Embrace Father Marshall and continue making SJB a place to live and love and share and care. How can YOU NOT keep from singing?!

If you, a family member or someone you know is homebound, in the hospital or a nursing facility, and is missing Mass and would like to receive Holy Communion, please let us know. A member from the Ministry of Care is happy to come by for a chat, a prayer or two, and to administer Communion. Simply contact the church office at 773-486-4300 with your request.

SUMMER TIME!
Donut Sunday and Children’s Liturgy of the Word will be taking a break for the months of June, July, and August. Both will begin again in September. The second Sunday of the month, September through May is Donut Sunday: we host coffee and pastries after every morning Mass in the church basement. Children’s Liturgy of the Word happens at the 9:45 a.m. Mass, also the second Sunday of the month: children ages 3 to 2nd grade adjourn to the church basement after the Introductory Rites of the Mass where they participate in related activities in a program scaled to their understanding and return after the prayer petitions. If you attend 11:30 a.m. Mass and are interested in leading Children’s Liturgy of the Word, please contact the rectory.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REGISTRATION
FOR 2019-2020 NOW OPEN
Classes for the 2019-20 Religious Education program are scheduled to begin Saturday, Sept. 7. Registration is now open!! Classes meet on Saturdays from 9-10:30 a.m. Register before July 1st to avoid an additional registration fee. Registration forms are available in the vestibule, the parish office, and on the parish website. Both First Communion and Confirmation are two-year preparation programs. Children may begin First Communion preparation as early as 1st grade. Adolescents may
begin Confirmation preparation as early as 7th grade.
BALANCE THE BUDGET!
As we look forward to the last few weeks of the fiscal year, we are projecting that we will end the year with a deficit. In an effort to minimize our shortfall, we will be taking a second collection at each Mass for the rest of the fiscal year.

Queridos Amigos,
Con mucha tristeza escribo mi último artículo del boletín. Después de 50 años en el ministerio de la Iglesia, ¡ya es tiempo de retirarme! 50 años es un largo viaje ... ¡pero un bendecido viaje en el que he estado desde que era un jovencito amante de la música! Y a excepción de los 5 años en que asistí a la USC en Los Ángeles ¡mi vida se centró en la Iglesia de Chicago!
Me gustaría compartir con ustedes uno de mis himnos favoritos para despedirme y darles las gracias:
“Ninguna tormenta puede sacudir mi calma interior Mientras que a esa roca me aferro;
Dado que el amor es el Señor del cielo y de la tierra, ¿Cómo puedo dejar de cantar?”
Mi viaje comenzó en San James en Arlington Heights y continuó en la Iglesia de San Clemente (15 años). en la Iglesia Santa María Margarita en Lomita (5 años), luego en la Iglesia San Josaphat en Lincoln Park (14 años), en San Nicolas (2 años), en San James en Arlington Heights (7 años más), en San Miguel en Old Town (10 años en total) y, finalmente, aquí en San Juan Berchmans (4 años). Y es SJB a quien mantengo más cerca de mi corazón. ¿CÓMO PUEDO DEJAR DE CANTAR?
Así que, simplemente quiero decir GRACIAS por la oportunidad de compartir mi pasión y regalo de música con ustedes. ¡La pasé genial aquí! Me apoyaron desde el principio y durante todo el tiempo con sus horas como voluntarios, sus amables palabras, sus sonrisas, su INCREÍBLE CANTO, su asistencia a conciertos y eventos y servicio de Oración de Taize. ¡Fue todo tan grato! Y francamente, me envolvió su amor y apoyo.
¿CÓMO PODEMOS DEJAR DE CANTAR?
GRACIAS a un increíble personal, tanto en la Iglesia como en la escuela. Gracias al Padre Wayne por confiar y darme la oportunidad de venir a SJB; Gracias al Padre Marshall por alentar mi pasión y fe interior. Pero principalmente ... ¡gracias a todos y cada uno de ustedes! Grandes cosas suceden en San Juan Berchmans. Ustedes, mis amigos, son evidencia de eso. Continúen con su espíritu, amor y apoyo. LA REGISTRACIÓN DE EDUCACIÓN RELIGIOSA PARA EL 2019-2020 ESTÁ ABIERTA
Las clases para el programa de Educación Religiosa 2019-20 están programadas para comenzar el sábado, 7 de septiembre. ¡La inscripción ya está abierta! Las clases se reúnen los sábados de 9-10:30 a.m. Regístrese antes del 1º de julio para evitar una cuota de inscripción adicional. Los formularios de inscripción están disponibles en el vestíbulo, la oficina parroquial y en el sitio web de la parroquia. Tanto la Primera Comunión como la Confirmación son programas de preparación de dos años. Los niños pueden comenzar la preparación para la Primera Comunión desde el 1er grado. Los adolescentes pueden comenzar la preparación para la Confirmación desde el 7º grado.

¡TIEMPO DE VERANO!
Domingo de donas y La Liturgia de la Palabra de los niños descansarán durante los meses de junio, julio y agosto. Ambos comenzarán de nuevo en septiembre. El segundo domingo del mes, de septiembre a mayo, es el domingo de donas: tendremos café y pan después de cada Misa de la mañana en el salón parroquial. La Liturgia de la Palabra de los niños ocurre en la Misa de las 9:45 am, también el segundo domingo del mes: los niños de 3 años a 2º grado se dirigen al salón parroquial después de los Ritos Introductorios de la Misa, donde participan en actividades relacionadas en un programa escalado a su comprensión y regresan después de las peticiones. Si asiste a la Misa de las 11:30 a.m. y está interesado en dirigir la Liturgia de la Palabra para los niños, comuníquese con la rectoría.
