Enrollment Guide

Enrolling for a Personal Secure Email Certificate

Information in this guide includes the following topics:

• “Using your Personal Secure Email certificate”

• “Ordering certificates” on page 4

• “Receiving your certificate” on page 10

Using your Personal Secure Email certificate

Entrust Personal Secure Email certificates can be used with email applications that support S\MIME format (such as Microsoft® Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, Apple Mail, or Microsoft Outlook Express) to encrypt, sign, or encrypt and sign messages.

They can also be used to:

• authenticate SSL VPNs

• sign Microsoft Office documents

• authenticate to a service on desktops or mobile devices

By encrypting an email, you safeguard the information in the email from anyone who might intercept it.

S/MIME certificates have a private key (which you use) and a public key for use by everyone else. Persons who should legitimately receive the email can decrypt it using your public key.

Attention: Never give your private key or private key password to anyone.

Always keep your certificate secure.

To exchange secure email with someone, sign an email and send it to the person. The public key is part of your signature. After they receive and use it they are given the

option of storing it for future use. From that time on they will be able to decrypt and read secure email that you send to them.

Information about configuring your email application to use S/MIME certificates can be found in the online documentation for that email application. If you need further help, see the Entrust Certificate Services knowledge base at
