THE TRAVELER’S JOURNEY

The traveler stands alone upon the hill.

And marvels at the peace and wondrous still.

Behind him lie familiar paths long past

That led to this challenging slope at last.

'Tis comfort to look back upon those trails

And re-live memories that through the mind do sail.

-'J!

The traveler stands alone upon the hill

He turns ahead to look upon the real -

Before him - higher mountains, fields and sky,

A brighter day dawns - *and yet with a sigh

He hesitates to leave - for part of him will stay,

But Future calls the traveler to be on his way.

The traveler looks ahead - the time to leave draws

near.

Forever treasured memories - this stay of one brief

year.

Look once more at the radiant skies -

For above the clouds your future lies.

Turn to travel the road to higher slopes.

Move on to new horizons and new hopes.

In sincere appreciation to one who has faithfully served the students of West Concord and helped to prepare them for the future; whose time has been directed to the students’ needs, and who has helped to make this year a successful one - we, the members of the staff of REFLECTIONS '69, gratefully dedicate this Annual to MRS. MARY S. ROCKETT.

On

West Concord

1966-1969

“Memoria in Afterna”

Formerly known as OLIVE HILL HIGH SCHOOL, WEST CONCORD became the first school in North Carolina devoted exclusively to the ninth grade student. This new idea, originated in 1965, created many problems both for the administration and the student. Most of these have been solved to the benefit and satisfaction of all concerned. There are still some problems - but a few of them, like the inevitable

“death and taxes” we shall have with us always.

This Annual - REFLECTIONS - (which was the “brainchild” of a few students of the first ninth grade class at WEST CONCORD who will, incidently, graduate from MORGANTON HIGH SCHOOL this year, and a forward-looking, democratic principal) - would like to take this opportunity to recognize the principals who have permitted, pampered, and persuaded the students to publish this record. We would, also, like to recognize the four editors who have so diligently worked to make this a creditable publication.
