LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

This year marked 27 years of service by Sojourner Recovery Services to women, their children, adolescents and men who suffer from the disease of addiction. During that time our success and community support has allowed for continuous growth of our organization and evolution in our mission to meet the needs of those we serve. Despite ongoing funding cuts, Sojourner was able to increase our services to women by six beds, provide innovative programming and generate additional funding sources.

During the last fiscal year, Sojourner provided treatment services to 159 adolescents, 233 women, 37 men and, helped provide for the birth of 33 drug free babies. Sojourner assured its goal of providing high quality, state-of-the-art client programming by maintaining its accreditation with CARF International. We obtained an additional three-year certification in 2012.

With the support of community members and Walmart, we established the Sisters of Sojourner program to provide a welcome basket to each inpatient client as they enter treatment. These baskets provide the basic needs for those with little or no resources. We entered our second year of an acupuncture program designed to compliment our recovery processes and launched our DUI Assessment program, which provides confidential drug and alcohol evaluations over the phone or internet to DUI offenders.

We held several special events to generate funds for our much needed services. Our first 5K Race for Recovery was in June and with over 300 participants, exceeded all expectations. This event was made possible by the generous support of ThyssenKrupp Bilstein and many other sponsors.

We also continued, for the sixth year, our annual Sojourner Concert Series, which was once again a huge success, thanks to the help of Mercy Health – Fairfield Hospital, PNC Bank and others.

There is no doubt that the many accomplishments of Sojourner Recovery Services are a result of the endless work and commitment of the staff, Board of Directors, and volunteers. For that, and as always, we are very grateful and extend our thanks.

actively in her recovery. She worked diligently on

her treatment plans, started attending 12 step

meetings and became involved in service work. She

and her mother attended family sessions and the

SAFE program (Substance Abuse Family Education)

while she was in treatment. She is working towards

reunification with her two children.

Amanda graduated from residential treatment,

has obtained a part-time job at Burger King and

continues active involvement in her recovery. She has

enrolled in classes at Miami University in Hamilton

for the fall. Amanda is grateful for her treatment

experience and believes other women who want to

change their lives should turn to Sojourner.

OUR SERVICES

Sojourner provides help and hope, utilizing holistic, individualized treatment programs

designed especially for people who want to overcome the disease of addiction.

The mission of Sojourner Recovery Services is to provide our clients quality, comprehensive services for primary substance abuse and/or related mental health issues in a caring and compassionate manner.

Sojourner Recovery Services is accredited by CARF International, the

Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities.

Assessment

All outpatient and residential clients receive our assessment service. In a face-to-face session, certified addiction counselors determine the nature and extent of the individual’s abuse, misuse and/or addiction to alcohol and/or other drugs. All clients are assessed utilizing the Global Appraisal of Individual Needs (GAIN) or the Addiction Severity Index (ASI) to

determine whether they meet the criteria for substance abuse. This session is crucial as the counselor uses information obtained and the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services (ODADAS) clinical protocols, to determine the appropriate level of care.

Outpatient

Sojourner operates one outpatient facility that serves

adolescents and women. Services include assessment review, individual, family and group counseling, crisis intervention, case management and discharge planning. We offer Non-Intensive Outpatient (NIOP) and Intensive Outpatient (IOP) services.

Adolescent IOP patients receive structured alcohol and drug addiction services a minimum of four days and eight total hours per week. Adolescent NIOP is offered two days per week, with a minimum of four hours weekly.

Women’s IOP is five days a week, with a minimum of three program hours a day. Childcare is provided at the same location free of charge.

Residential

Sojourner has five residential treatment facilities that serve men, women, and adolescents. Residential treatment programs provide structured alcohol and drug addiction services and activities. Program components include, but

are not limited to: assessment review, individual, family counseling and group counseling, crisis intervention, case management, and discharge planning.

Programming for adults is at least thirty hours per week and for adolescents at least twenty hours. Individual and/ or group counseling services are provided at least five days per week. During the academic year, adolescents also receive fifteen hours of in-facility schooling. Housing and food are provided for clients.

Medication Assisted Treatment

Sojourner offers the opportunity to be assessed by a physician for medication assisted treatment. The medications relieve withdrawal symptoms, reduce cravings, and bring about a biochemical balance in the body.

Discharge Recovery Planning

Sojourner’s discharge planning services start at the point of admission and are an integral part of our recovery programs. We strive to provide clients with the skills and tools necessary to successfully transition once treatment is completed. Focus is placed on developing a recovery action plan which includes, among other things, sober support, housing, medical needs, employment, parenting and education.

Perinatal

Sojourner operates a prevention program focused on women of child-bearing age. We utilize a holistic approach to provide services to drug dependent and high risk pregnant and post-partum women before, during, after, or in lieu of treatment in a variety of settings. We strive to help women achieve abstinence and maintain sobriety throughout the last trimester of their pregnancy, thereby delivering a “drug free baby” and improving the quality of life for both mother and infant.

Trends

Opiate Addiction on the Rise:

Since 2009, we have seen a steady and significant increase in the number of clients with an opiate addiction. This year opiate users comprised a record-breaking 77.9% of the total client population, marking a more than 25% increase over the past four years.

Co-occurring Disorders:

Another trend we have observed is the increase in co-occurring disorders – individuals impacted by opiate addiction and a mental health disorder. As an overall agency, 85.9% of people served had co-occurring disorders in 2012.

Notably, this increase was more significant in the women’s population, rising 30% since 2009. In the men’s population, the four year increase was less than 10%. A significant number of clients in our adolescent population continue to face co-occurring disorders.

To meet this changing client demographic, we reconfigured how we provide treatment. Our use of Medication Assisted Treatment has helped alleviate the withdraw process and allowed clients to move into the treatment aspect much quicker. The medication also assists in eliminating cravings – a major asset in helping clients remain in treatment.

Our therapy models are designed to treat co-occurring disorders and address psychological development, trauma and substance abuse. We have a consulting psychiatrist who provides assessment, diagnosis, medication management and guidance with treatment planning. We are currently vesting our energy into engagement and retention projects to aid these clients in being able to smoothly transition and securely remain in treatment.

Programming Updates

Auricular Acupuncture, “Acu Detox”:

Through funding from the Health Foundation of Greater Cincinnati, we added Auricular Acupuncture to our programming in three of our residential locations. Commonly referred to as Acu Detox, it is a five point ear acupuncture protocol for recovery.

Clinical studies show strong evidence that this type of acupuncture improves patient outcomes. We are in year two of this service and seeing positive results. Demonstrated benefits include: assistance with detoxification needs, decrease in cravings and anxiety, and an increase in client retention.

Sisters of Sojourner Basket Program

Sojourner now provides each new inpatient client a welcome basket containing new bedding, towels, personal items and a journal. Though it can be hard to imagine, many come to us with few or no amenities. We want our clients to feel at home and begin the road to recovery with a positive step. This was made possible by the support of community members and Walmart.

DUI Assessment Program

We launched the DUI Assessment Specialist program, a service that provides confidential alcohol and drug evaluations via telephone and internet.

Specifically geared for DUI offenders, each assessment is done by a licensed and certified Addiction Counselor, takes 50 to 60 minutes and is accessible by anyone in the United States. Clients receive their Evaluation Reports and Referral Reports within three working days.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Sojourner is committed to educating the community about the often misunderstood disease of addiction and helping remove the stigma that can be wrongly attached to individuals who suffer from it.

Academic Institutions

Sojourner provides on-site internship and practicum

opportunities in the fields of social work, nursing, psychology and family studies for Miami University and Galen College of Nursing students, among others. Our staff members also routinely serve as guest lecturers in the classroom setting and are interviewed for student projects.

5K Race for Recovery

Over 300 people participated in our inaugural 5K race. We look forward to making this an annual Sojourner event.

Professional Agencies and Medical Providers

In 2012, Sojourner provided education to 114 organizations, which included hospitals, homeless and domestic violence shelters, state agencies and local physicians. We provide information about chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders, as well as the services Sojourner provides. This information sharing helps ensure that individuals are correctly diagnosed.
