Preface

I decided to write this book because I have realised that many of us have some trouble understanding what percentages are and how to work them out.

For instance, a friend of mine has called me a few times asking “if something costs 45 euros after a 20% discount, how much did it cost before the discount?” or “if I buy something for 25 euros, how much VAT do I pay?” etc.

Not only adults have difficulty calculating percentages, but also young children who have been taught them at school relatively recently.

Every day we see headlines like “50% off sale this week” or “the unemployment rate in Greece has risen to 21%” or “our income has dropped 35%, because of the austerity measures, since 2010” or “there’s 15% chance of rain today” etc.

Percentages play an important part in our lives and learning how to operate them is therefore vital.

But, where did the term “per cent” come from? According to

Wikipedia¹:

In Ancient Rome, long before the existence of the decimal system, computations were often made in fractions which were multiples of 1/100. For exam-ple, the Emperor Augustus levied a tax of 1/100 on goods sold at auction known as centesima rerum

venalium. Computation with these fractions were

similar to computing percentages. As denomina-tions of money grew in the Middle Ages, compu-tations with a denominator of 100 become more standard and from the late 15th century to the early 16th century it became common for arithmetic texts to include such computations. Many of these texts applied these methods to profit and loss, interest rates, and the Rule of Three. By the 17th century it was standard to quote interest rates in hundredths.

The symbol ’%’ reads “per cent”, which is short for the Latin phrase “per centum” and means in every hundred. The words “century”, “centennial”, “Centigrade”, “centimetre” etc. have the same stem centi-.

Simply speaking, a percentage is a fraction which has denomi-nator 100. So, for example:

23% = 23 100 In general:

x% = x

Converting Decimals and

Fractions into Percentages

To convert a decimal into a percentage, we move the decimal point two places to the right and append the ‘%’ sign. If the number has fewer than two decimal places, we add zeros. Examples:

0.35 = 35% 1.2 = 120% 0.175 = 17.5% Easy, right?

To convert a fraction to a percentage, we either convert the fraction to its equivalent with denominator 100, multiplying or dividing its terms with the same number, or we simply divide its terms and convert the answer into a percentage, as shown above. We can also multiply the fraction with 100%, which is equal to

100 100 or 1.

into Decimals and

Fractions

We can convert a percentage into a decimal by shifting the decimal point two places to the left, adding zeros if necessary. Examples:

24% = 024.% = 0.24 125% = 125.% = 1.25
