HISTORY OF LAW ENFORCEMENT IN LOS ANGELES, 1869-PRESENT
This lecture explores the history of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), examine its origins in the late 19th century, the controversial leadership of Chief William H. Parker in the 1950's and 1960's and its dramatic expansion in size and practice in the 1980's and 1990's. Along the way, we pay attention to the complicated relationship between police and the wider population, as we learn how race, gender, and class interact with ideas of public safety in an often chaotic American metropolis.

Acrylics are a great choice for beginners because it is a very forgiving medium. Acrylics are water-based, which means, unlike oil paints, they can be thinned and cleaned with water. This art class instructs in the use and techniques of painting with acrylic paints. Students choose their subject using photos or printed materials. We are very fortunate to have this fabulous hidden treasure in our own backyard. Please don't miss this opportunity to listen to this incredible collection of period music machines. The Nix Collection of automated musical instruments began in 1983 with Frank and Shirley Nix's purchase of a few antique music boxes. It grew much larger with the addition of merry-go-rounds, dance hall organs, and nickelodeons. Another building on the property houses the larger instruments. Mr. Nix guides us on his musical journey by playing these instruments as well as fascinating us with stories of his collection. *All proceeds are donated to St.
Jude Children's Research Hospital.
