THE Evolution of the

Metering Industry...

In 1885, Galileo Ferraris initiated the development of the Mechanical kWh meter after the use of AC transformer for the distribution of electricity to measure the consumption.

A Century later, Electricity became the main source for energy, and the demand increased remarkably. So the need for high accuracy meters

(6)

Due to the increasing oil prices, the cost of electricity increased, the need for a more accurate meter reading systems arose, resulting in the development of Remote Meter Reading Systems.

In the 90’s when Electricity bills increased, in some countries consumers failed to pay their Electricity Bills which put utilities in tight financial positions. The development of One Way Key Pad Electricity Meters

(7)

In the mid 90’s as Electricity Demand went sky rocketing,

utilities introduced Multi-Tariffs to encourage consumers to reduce their consumption to reduce the Peak Load. So the need for Multi-Tariff Meters with Max. Demand was inevitable.

In the 2000’s as electricity consumers became aware of

methods of tampering electricity meters, the need for

Electronic Meters with Anti-Tampering features became a must to reduce Energy Losses.

Now Utilities are looking for Metering Solutions that improve their efficiency and increase their Profit too. So the deployment of 2 way communication systems became the best Solution to reduce Technical Losses as well as Commercial Losses too.
