GLN4O Final Evaluation

Your Task

You will create a portfolio that contains the components necessary for achieving employment in a professional job. These tools will help you be the best candidate for the job, and remind you what your goals and aspirations are in applying. Complete the following tasks in creating your portfolio.

A) Transitions and Change

 What is your professional mission statement? It should describe you and what you hope to achieve. Explain using examples.

 Complete TWO-THREE SMART goals for your career or educational pathway. Use this resource to complete these - https://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/smart-goals.htm

 Complete a Gap Analysis (see template on our website) to measure the skills/knowledge gap between you and where you hope to be in 5 years.

o What does this analysis indicate about your next steps?

 Create a budget for the near future (September, or next school/work year). Brainstorm all factors (rent, phone, hygiene, leisure, etc) that you might be responsible for paying, and explain what you will do to achieve your goals (savings, a big purchase, pay off debt etc).

o Have your budget approved by Mr. Shea

o Use the Money Smarts tools we used earlier in the year

B) Job Application Tools

 Complete a Resume using the template (change as necessary) online. Use feedback from Mr. Shea to create a professional resume.

 Complete a Cover Letter for a potential employer in a future job that you would be interested in. Use the template online and feedback to improve your final product.

(2)

 List THREE Transferable skills you have, and explain (using examples) how they improve your employability and could make you an asset to the company

Select 2-3 artifacts that best outline your work and indicate the skills that you have. Artifacts may be in the form of pictures of projects, successful projects, or other work that demonstrates your skills and abilities. If many professional portfolios, artifacts are focused on the area of employment the individual is seeking (e.g. If I am a teacher, I am going to include artifacts that relate to my teaching like lessons, photos of student work, or assignments for students). For the time being, yours will likely be more general until you gain education/experience in your job field.

 Include any awards or recognitions that you have. You may also include workplace performance evaluations in this section (depending on your work experience). You may also include volunteer recognitions you may have if you have completed your volunteer hours.

 You must include a page with your professional references on it. These references should include the information that your prospective employer needs to ensure you meet the job requirements. Normally, you'd have the name, work phone number, and email of the reference.

o You must obtain permission from your reference to use them as a reference

C) The Next Steps…

 What is your post-secondary plan? It may include school, work, or something else.

o Outline your plan – how do you see (or want) the 5 years to unfold? Lots can change, but it’s good to have an overview.

o Be as specific with the details as you can – If you list school, what school, cost of tuition, transportation costs, location, etc.

 Do you plan to live at home, or rent? What is the cost and pros/cons of each?

o If renting, then learn about rental agreements, and list 5 things you ought to know before signing a lease

 What resources are available to you if you need help? Include any government services, people, or community services that could support you in times of need.

o You should be outlining and explaining how they will support you

 What expectations will be placed on you in future employment opportunities? List and explain 2-3 predicted expectations and how you will change your current behaviors to match an

employer’s/workplace’s expectations of you.
