The dependency ratio is a useful indication of the age structure of a population with young (0-14) and old (aged 65+) as a percentge of the population of working age (15-64).

The young dependency ratio refers to the number of persons aged 0-14 years as a percentage of those aged 15-64.

The old dependency ratio refers to the number of persons aged 65 years and over as a percentage of those aged 15-64.

The total dependency ratio is the sum of the young and old ratios.

The total national dependency ratio increased from 49.3 in 2011 to 52.7 in 2016. This shows there is now more than one young or old person for every two people of working age in Ireland. The dependency is slightly higher at 53.7 in Cork and Kerry. West Cork LHO has the highest total age dependency ratio at 62.2.

Cork City has the lowest total dependency ratio at 42.8 although North Lee has the lowest old dependency ratio (18.9).

Principal Demographic Results for Cork Kerry (CHO 4) Census 2016

The population pyramid (Fig. 5a) for Ireland for Irish Travellers shows a very different pattern to that of the total population of Ireland with a much higher proportion of younger people and far fewer older people, reflecting lower life expectancy in the Traveller population.

The population pryamid for Irish Travellers for Cork & Kerry shows some variances in age cohorts. Fig 5b.

Table 6 shows an increase since 2011 in the number of Traveller households in temporary accommodation.

Although the number in temporary accommodation has declined in Cork City, and remained stable in Kerry, the number has almost doubled in Cork County Table 6
