Infotainment and Security Solutions

Times and Technology are Changing

From the beginning of the millennium the tech-nology for entertainment and security systems moved from standalone two wire solutions to all integrated Ethernet network systems. Since then we were continuously developing, in close coope-ration with our longtime suppliers, an integrated solution based on Ethernet network to the demands of commercial ships. During this deve-lopment we learned that an Ethernet network platform and the wide range of available applica-tions and its scalability results in a product which can be used from standard commercial ships up to the biggest offshore vessels and also could also be used for mega yachts.

After more than ten years of experience we are proud that we have supplied our system to a big number of container ships, bulkers, offshore wind mill jack-up vessels, the biggest ever offshore platform removal vessel and the longest mega yachts.

The Ethernet system is an open platform which gives us the possibility to easily provide customized solutions as a turnkey package to our customers.

In general our solution is based on the following technologies:

n Ethernet network form flat 12 ports single

switch to high performance redundant layer- 3 networks with much more than thousand ports

n Office PC solutions in close cooperation with

the customers IT-deparment

n Connection to the World Wide Web and eMail

accounts via FBB, VSAT, Iridium, GSM

n Mobile on board communication such as

GSM, DECT, WiFi networks for data and voice communication including interfaces to classic VHF/UHF systems

n Public and in-cabin entertainment comprising

IP-TV and Video on Demand services viewing by the crews’ laptops or via TV-Sets which only have a power and an Ethernet socket

n Voice over IP based telephone and talk back

systems also for high dangerous areas. Optional intergaration of high quality video conferencing

n Master-Clock systems as IP solution including

network time protocol servers so that the PC clocks and ship time is always synchronized.

For security and operations we than add the following

n IP based HD CCTV Camera systems from one

hundreds of cameras and control stations.

n Thermal cameras with dual purpose for

security and navigational assistance

n Door and access control using all kind of

available sensors such as radar, deck pressure and infrared.

n Special small target, ice and oil spill detection

radars in addition to the navigational ones.

n Sonars for navigation support and a 360° diver

detection.

n Disorientating lasers for non-lethal defense n Fire detection and safety management system n A commercial of the shelf own developed

command and control center integrating all of the above listed security systems to one simple user interface including decision support.

Benefits of Integrated Network Solutions

Integrated network solutions are configurable to provide systems comparable to classic solutions or can provide more features in accordance with the available budget.

The main benefits of an integrated network solution are:

Ease of Use (self-explanatory)

Network applications and hardware are manage-able via web interfaces. This permits system appliances such as VoIP (telephone), Master clock, Entertainment (TV and Video), CCTV, network switches etc. are all controllable and configurable from any networked PC protected by administrator password.

Remote Maintenance

Systems available via web-interface can be monitored and controlled via communication links to shore.

Cable and Weight Reduction

All network applications can use the same physical network separated by simple virtual LANs. This reduces dramatically the total required cable length, number of cable types and total cable weight.

Flexibility

A network port can be easily changed from one application to another e.g. an office PC port, a telephone VoIP port a Slave Clock port or other similar appliance. The change from one application to another can be achieved via a few mouse clicks using the above described web-interfaces.

Standardised Network

Products and Protocols

The usage of common products using standard network protocols enables integrated network systems flexibility to add any Ethernet based application dependant upon available band-width. These systems will always be state-of-the-art when delivered.

Crew Welfare and Passenger

Services

Whether crew or passengers, services such as Internet, E-mail and live Television at sea enhance our comfort and communication with those ashore. Integrated network solutions provide these features from as little as only one Ethernet RJ45 socket and a PC onboard.

The Wärtsilä SAM Electronics

Approach

Due to different requests by owners of all kind of ships Wärtsilä SAM Electronics developed their own integrated network solution. Our experiences range from small office PC networks on container ships and bulkers through to anchor handling tugs, large pipe layers, RoPax ferries, cruise liners and the largest mega yachts ever built.

We have developed a network of reputable partners who are all specialists for key network components. Together we have designed an integrated solution to fulfil the requirements of sea going ships.

We can provide full Turnkey project management, also providing cables and workmanship including cable laying and stripping, equipment installation and welding work as required.

The Solution Levels

The compact solution for container ships and tankers includes TV and information distribution at sea via Ethernet and onboard PC networks. The solution for offshore vessels also includes office environment components, VoIP telephony and IP clock systems all based on open architec-ture to integrate also security systems like IP-CCTV, all kind of security sensors, safety and security management and further applications via one physical cable network.

The standard solution for RoPax ships and cruise liners additionally includes a billing system (or can be interfaced to an existing billing system) and a basic Video on Demand server.

The plus solution for cruise ships incorporates state-of-the-art Graphical User Interfaces, supplying all features required for billings and bookings for regular hotel services. Interfacing to the standard hotel management system is

The yacht solution for Mega-Yachts incorporates a personalised sophisticated Graphical User Interface for PCs, Apple iPod and iPad or other devices as defined by the customer.

Advanced Video on Demand services with HD quality are available. The solution includes the integration of advanced room control via the user interface.

Infotainment Compact

The solution for container

ships, bulkers, tankers and

other such commercial vessels

Overview

The compact Infotainment solution was developed to provide a state-of-the-art, cost effective and easy to handle information and entertainment system for commercial ships. The system is based on an Ethernet network with a central router / switch and server rack. It is designed to provide a wide range of modularity in hard- & software to fulfil each customer’s requirements.

The main target of the system is to provide satellite TV and Internet access to the crew.

Functionality

The compact Infotainment solution relies on a client-server architecture based on a modular design allowing functional extensions. The graphical user interface supports easy-to-use navigation between the offered services. It is possible to customise the user interface, e.g. to change colours or logos to integrate the ship owners corporate identity.

The administration and remote management and maintenance can be done via Web-Interfaces by an onboard or shore based administrator. Digital Live-TV and radio signals will be distri-buted as a real Multicast Stream which decreases the amount of required network bandwidth. Crew and passengers can use the Infotainment system with a simple PC including watching TV or a standard TV set with a Set Top Box.
