Structural Aspects of Business Process Diagram Abstraction

Structural Aspects of Business Process Diagram Abstraction

Let us look at a process where a customer buys goods paying with a money transfer: (s)he signs into the online banking account, provides the transfer information, and confirms the transfer. A sequence of the three latter activities semanti- cally corresponds to a more coarse-grained activity “pay by transfer”. Albeit business semantics has great importance for abstraction, we do not address it in this paper: we neither consider the business meaning of model objects being abstracted, nor the semantics of the result. Rather, the focus is on the preservation of the overall structure, since business semantics can not be approached, while structural aspects are not studied. We pay attention to the process structure and semantics of BPMN language elements (do not mix it with business semantics). The approach seeks for process model fragments which are self-contained from a structural point of view. Meanwhile, abstraction of a signal event and a timer event makes the difference.

Diagram Models in Continuous Business Process Improvement

Diagram Models in Continuous Business Process Improvement

One of the key features of the state of these art solutions is the possibility of designing flows and procedures without engaging programmers. They all use graphical editors for BPMN. Forrester’s analysts state 3 key areas for future business process management suites. One is "empowering business architects to design and execute on process strategy. Business architects are playing a broader role in driving business change initiatives. In many cases, these architects focus on defining the strategy for trans- forming end-to-end business processes. Historically, BPM tools o ffered very little to help these strategists scope and manage large-scale change projects. This dis- connect between strategy and execution keeps BPM suites isolated to the CIO’s o ffice, without a way to have a greater impact on enterprise strategy."

BPMN VS. UML ACTIVITY DIAGRAM FOR BUSINESS PROCESS MODELING

ABSTRACT During the last years, it has been noticed a growing interest of organizations in improving their business processes in order to be more competitive in a globalized economy that passes nowadays through a severe financial crisis with restrictive market conditions and limited profit margins. The first step in achieving this goal is to use an adequate business process modeling language to represent their business processes. For this purpose, an evaluation of the existing business process modeling languages would be very useful in making the right decision. Our research work comes to supplement the previous researches that have evaluated business process modeling languages. The evaluation performed in this paper is focused on the two most widely used graphical notations for business processes:

When a Process Diagram is not Enough

When a Process Diagram is not Enough

There is a requirement for a tool to make this kind of documentation easily with the ability to include the process related information as well as other related diagrams, documents etc. and to present in a common format. This is where the KAISHA-Tec’s new Content Module comes in. It can reduce the time, cost, and effort needed to create such project documentation and to encourage the use of standards. Standard business documents can be developed in the ActiveModeler Avantage process modeler based on reusable sections, as a tree structure, so there is no copying and pasting of sections between documents. Any part of the process model can also be included (e.g. a full diagram, task, metrics, owner information) and the whole thing exported as a standard Microsoft Word document for easy reading and sign- off.

Using Ontology Search in the Design of Class Diagram from Business Process Model

Using Ontology Search in the Design of Class Diagram from Business Process Model

Abstract— Business process model describes process flow of a business and can be seen as the requirement for developing a software application. This paper discusses a BPM2CD guideline which complements the Model Driven Architecture concept by suggesting how to create a platform-independent software model in the form of a UML class diagram from a business process model. An important step is the identification of UML classes from the business process model. A technique for object-oriented analysis called domain analysis is borrowed and key concepts in the business process model will be discovered and proposed as candidate classes for the class diagram. The paper enhances this step by using ontology search to help identify important classes for the business domain. As ontology is a source of knowledge for a particular domain which itself can link to ontologies of related domains, the search can give a refined set of candidate classes for the resulting class diagram.

Extending the UML 2 Activity Diagram with Business Process Goals and Performance Measures and the Mapping to BPEL *

3 The UML 2 Profile In this section, we describe the extended metamodel for Activity Diagrams for the UML 2 profile with business process goals and performance measures. Activity Diagrams are a part of the behavioural set of UML 2 diagrams, and are used for modelling business processes as well as for describing control flows in software. A UML 2 Activity Diagram specifies the control and data flow between different tasks, called actions, which are essential for the realisation of an activity. The UML 2 Activity Diagram currently does not support the graphical representation of business process goals and performance measures. Thus, it is not possible to show, e.g., time restrictions of the business process, its cost or quality requirements. UML offers a possibility to extend and adapt its metamodel to a specific area of application through the creation of profiles. This mechanism is called a light-weight extension. UML profiles are UML packages of the stereotype «profile». A profile can extend a metamodel or another profile [20] while preserving the syntax and semantic of existing UML elements. It adds elements which extend existing metaclasses. UML profiles consist of stereotypes, constraints and tagged values.

An evaluation of business process model techniques, using Moody s quality criterion for a good diagram

An evaluation of business process model techniques, using Moody s quality criterion for a good diagram

One of the main motives behind the research is that graphical diagrams are believed to be more effective than text in communication between end users and/or domain practitioners [3]. The research started with a literature review with the aim to identify relevant graphical modeling techniques that could be useful when producing a business process model. We started by reviewing well known articles about graphical modelling techniques and identified references in order to distinguish the most prominent graphical business process modelling techniques that could be used for a a problematic and complex situation. Since our major focus is process modeling techniques we choose to exclude non process oriented graphical modelling techniques. We found four candidates: 1) Flowchart/nodemaps, 2) Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN), 3) Event Driven Process Chains (EPC), and 4) UML- activity diagrams. These four process oriented modeling techniques vill be evaluated based by Moodys quality criterions.

Then, an own program (a software application) was developed by the author in order to review the obtained summary and facilitate the selection procedure of different types of statements (definitional, cause and effect and compositional). After all automatic process, the finally selected statements (190 in total) were completely read and analyzed by the author with the validation and re-classification objective and after that they were stored in a database. and BPMN [2]. These models are widely used in practice as an important source of information about the current or future business processes in an organization. In this paper we focus on the mapping between MAP and BPMN in order to align intentional models from MAP with business process models for BPMN. These process modeling languages represent two different views of a process model, the first focus on strategic goals of the enterprise, in other terms what the organization wants to achieve? While the second focus on how these are operationalised? The idea of a method to translate from MAP model into BPMN model diagram would bring

Activity Diagram Patterns for Modeling Quality Constraints in Business Processes

Activity Diagram Patterns for Modeling Quality Constraints in Business Processes

Fig. 2 shows two simple workflows, the left shall be regarded as the pattern; the right shall be regarded as an excerpt of an existing business process in an organization. Let us assume the process modeler wants to apply the pattern on the left to the process on the right. The question is how exactly that can be done. Obviously, there are some distinct connection points which are the similar Actions in both processes, namely “B” and “C”. Assuming that pattern application means to build one single united process and therefore one single united control flow from both Activities, we have to determine if the “B”s and “C”s of both processes have to be mapped to one single Action “B” and “C” in the resulting process. Another conceivable possibility would be that they represent the same kind of Action but different Action executions. If we assume “B” and “C” are the same Action executions in both processes, we make the following observation: in the pattern process, “C” follows “B” directly, apart from the decision node. In the business process, there are two other Actions in the control flow between “B” and “C”. In an effort to create a joint process out of the pattern and the existing business process, how does the modeler know if inserting other Actions in a control flow is allowed or forbidden by the intention of the pattern or the original process? To solve these problems, there has to be additional information laid down in the model of the pattern. This can be achieved by the light-weight Activity Diagram extension that we are going to present in this paper.

Since it conforms to the XMI specification, it is also CASE tool agnostic, meaning that it can be imported into any CASE tool that supports XMI data import. CASE tool vendor support for XMI is growing slowly but steadily. After import into a CASE tool, the software designer can work on the UML class diagram and focus on technical aspects. Since stereotypes and tagged values can already be defined in the ontology and knowledge base editor, the software generation value chain effectively includes the knowledge base. Hence it is possible to implement a two-stage generation process: the first generation stage results in the generation of executable process definitions and UML class diagrams, while the results of the second generation stage are
