Using the ServerGuide Setup and Installation CD

TheServerGuideSetupandInstallationCDcontainsasetupandinstallation programthatisdesignedforyourserver.TheServerGuideprogramdetectsthe servermodelandhardwareoptionsthatareinstalledandusesthatinformation duringsetuptoconfigurethehardware.TheServerGuideprogramsimplifies operating-systeminstallationsbyprovidingupdateddevicedriversand,insome cases, installingthemautomatically.

If alaterversionof theServerGuideprogramisavailable,youcan downloadafree imageof theServerGuideSetup andInstallationCD.Todownloadtheimage,goto theIBMServerGuideWebpage at

Using the IBM ServeRAID Configuration Utility program

Starting the IBM ServeRAID Configuration Utility program

TostarttheIBMServeRAIDConfigurationUtilityprogram,completethefollowing steps:

1. Turn ontheserver.

2. When the prompt <<< Press <CTRL><A> for IBM ServeRAID Configuration Utility! >>> appears, pressCtrl+A.

3. Toselecta choicefromthemenu,usethearrowkeys.

4. Usethearrowkeystoselect thechannel forwhichyouwantto changesettings.

5. Tochangethesettingsoftheselecteditems,follow theinstructionsonthe screen.Be suretopressEntertosaveyourchanges.

IBM ServeRAID Configuration Utility menu choices

ThefollowingchoicesareontheIBMServeRAIDConfigurationUtilitymenu:

Using ServeRAID Manager

UseServeRAIDManager,whichisontheIBMServeRAIDManagerApplicationCD, to performthefollowingtasks:

v Configurearedundantarray ofindependentdisks(RAID)array v

Erasealldatafromaharddiskdriveandreturnthedisktothefactory-default settings

v ViewtheRAIDconfigurationandassociateddevices v MonitortheoperationoftheRAIDcontroller

Toperformsometasks,you canrunServeRAIDManagerasaninstalledprogram.

However, toconfiguretheRAIDcontrollerandperformaninitialRAIDconfiguration ontheserver,youmustrunServeRAIDManagerinStartableCDmode,as

describedintheinstructionsinthissection.

SeetheServeRAIDdocumentationontheIBMServeRAIDSupportCDfor

additionalinformationabout RAIDtechnologyandinstructionsforusingServeRAID Managerto configuretheRAIDcontroller.AdditionalinformationaboutServeRAID Managerisalso availablefromtheHelp menu.For informationabouta specific objectintheServeRAIDManagertree,selecttheobjectandclickActions-->Hints andtips.

Configuring the RAID controller

By runningServeRAIDManagerinStartableCDmode,youcan configuretheRAID controllerbeforeyouinstall theoperatingsystem.Theinformationinthissection assumesthatyouarerunningServeRAIDManagerinStartableCDmode.

TorunServeRAIDManagerinStartableCDmode,turnontheserver;then, insert theCDintotheCD-RW/DVDdrive.If ServeRAIDManagerdetects anunconfigured controllerandreadydrives,theConfigurationwizardstarts.

In theConfigurationwizard,youcanselectexpress configurationor custom configuration.Expressconfigurationautomaticallyconfiguresthecontrollerby grouping thefirst twophysicaldrivesintheServeRAIDManagertreeintoanarray andcreating aRAIDlevel-1logicaldrive.Ifyouselectcustomconfiguration,you can selectthephysicaldrivesthatyouwanttogroup intoanarray andcreatea hot-spare drive.

Usingexpressconfiguration: Touseexpress configuration,completethe following steps:

1. In theServeRAIDManagertree,click thecontroller.

2. Click Expressconfiguration.

3. Click Next.

4. In the“Configurationsummary”window,review theinformation.Tochangethe configuration,clickModify arrays.

5. Click Apply;whenyouareaskedwhetheryouwanttoapplythenew

configuration,clickYes.Theconfigurationissavedinthecontrollerandinthe physicaldrives.

6. ExitfromServeRAIDManagerandremovetheCDfromtheCD-RW/DVDdrive.

7. Restart theserver.

Usingcustomconfiguration: Tousecustomconfiguration,completethe following steps:

1. IntheServeRAIDManagertree,clickthecontroller.

2. ClickCustomconfiguration.

3. ClickNext.

4. Inthe“Createarrays”window, fromthelist ofready drives,selectthedrives thatyouwantto groupintothearray.

5. Clickthe(Addselecteddrives)icon toaddthedrivestothearray.

6. Ifyouwanttoconfigureahot-sparedrive,completethefollowing steps:

a. ClicktheSparestab.

b. Selectthephysicaldrive thatyou wantto designateasthehot-sparedrive, andclickthe(Addselecteddrives)icon.

7. ClickNext.

8. Reviewtheinformationinthe“Configurationsummary”window.Tochangethe configuration,clickBack.

9. ClickApply;whenyouareaskedwhetheryou wantto applythenew

configuration,clickYes.Theconfigurationissavedinthecontrollerandinthe physicaldrives.

10. ExitfromServeRAIDManagerandremovetheCDfromtheCD-RW/DVD drive.

11. Restarttheserver.

Viewing the configuration

You canuseServeRAIDManagertoviewinformationabout RAIDcontrollersand theRAIDsubsystem(suchasarrays,logicaldrives,hot-sparedrives,andphysical drives). WhenyouclickanobjectintheServeRAIDManagertree,informationabout thatobjectappearsintherightpane.Todisplaya listofavailable actionsforan object, clicktheobjectandclickActions.

Configuring simple-swap SATA RAID

Important: HostRAIDisnotsupportedontheSCO6.0andUnixWare7.14 operatingsystems.

UsetheAdaptecHostRAIDConfigurationUtilityprogramtoaddRAIDlevel-0and level-1functionalityto theintegratedSerialATAcontroller(simple-swapSATA models). Besureto usethisprogramasdescribedinthisdocument.Usethis programto performthefollowingtasks:

v Configurearedundantarray ofindependentdisks(RAID)array v VieworchangetheRAIDconfigurationandassociateddevices

When youareusingtheAdaptecRAIDConfigurationUtilityprogramtoconfigure andmanagesimple-swap SATAarrays,considerthefollowinginformation:

v TheintegratedSerialATAcontrollerwithintegratedSATARAID(simple-swap SATAmodels)supports RAIDlevel-0andlevel-1withtheoptionof havinga hot-sparedrive.

v YoucannotusetheServerGuideSetupandInstallationCDto configurethe integratedSerialATAcontrollerwithintegratedRAID.

v Harddiskdrivecapacitiesaffecthow youcreatearrays.Drivesinanarraycan havedifferentcapacities,buttheRAIDcontrollertreatsthemasif theyallhave thecapacityofthesmallestharddiskdrive.

v Tohelpensuresignalquality,donotmix driveswithdifferentspeedsanddata rates.

Using the Adaptec RAID Configuration Utility program

UsetheArrayConfigurationUtilityto addRAIDlevel-0 andlevel-1 functionalityto theintegratedSerialATA(SATA)controller.ThisutilityisapartoftheBIOScode.

For additionalinformationaboutusingtheAdaptecRAIDConfigurationUtility program,seethedocumentationontheAdaptecHostRAIDSupport CD.If thisCD didnotcomewiththeserver,youcandownloadit fromhttp://www.ibm.com/

support/.

Using the SATA HostRAID feature

Theinstructionsinthis sectionareforusingtheArrayConfigurationUtilityprogram to accessandperformaninitialRAIDlevel-1configuration.

For additionalinformationaboutusingtheArrayConfigurationUtilityprogramto create,configure,andmanagearrays,seethedocumentationontheAdaptec HostRAIDSupportCD.

Configuringthe controller: TousetheArrayConfigurationUtilityprogramto configureaRAIDlevel-1array,completethefollowingsteps:

1. Turnontheserver.

2. When the prompt Press <CTRL><<A> for Adaptec RAID Configuration Utilityappears,pressCtrl+A.

3. SelectArrayConfigurationUtility.

4. SelectCreateArray.

5. Fromthelist ofready drives,selectthetwo drivesthatyouwantto groupinto thearray.

6. WhenyouarepromptedtoselecttheRAIDlevel,selectRAID-1.

7. (Optional)Type anidentifierforthearray.

8. Whenyouarepromptedforthearraybuildmethod,selectQuickInt.

9. Followtheinstructionsonthescreentocompletetheconfiguration,andselect Doneto exit.

10. Restarttheserver.

Viewingthe configuration: ToviewinformationabouttheSATAcontroller, completethefollowingsteps:

1. StarttheArrayConfigurationUtility.

2. FromtheArrayConfigurationUtilitywindow,selectManageArrays.

3. SelectanarrayandpressEnter.

4. Press Esctoexitfromtheprogram.

Using the baseboard management controller utility program

Thebaseboardmanagementcontroller(BMC)utilityprogramprovidesbasic service-processor environmentalmonitoringfunctionsfor theserver.If an environmentalconditionexceedsathresholdorif asystemcomponentfails,the baseboardmanagement controllerlightsLEDstohelpyoudiagnosetheproblem andalso recordstheerrorintheBMCsystemeventlog.

Thebaseboardmanagementcontrolleralsoprovidesthefollowingremoteserver management capabilitiesthroughtheOSASMBridgemanagementutilityprogram:

v Command-lineinterface(IPMIShell)

Thecommand-lineinterface(CLI)providesdirectaccesstoservermanagement functionsthroughtheIPMIprotocol.Usethecommand-lineinterfaceto issue commandsto controltheserverpower,viewsysteminformation,andidentify the server.Youcanalsosaveoneormorecommandsasa textfileandrunthefile asascript.

v SerialoverLAN

EstablishaSerialoverLAN(SOL)connection tomanageserversfromaremote location.You canremotelyviewandchangetheBIOSsettings,restart theserver, identifytheserver,andperformother managementfunctions.AnystandardTelnet clientapplicationcanaccesstheSOLconnection.

Important:TheserverEthernetportsaresettoDHCPbydefault.In ordertofind your BMConanexistingnetwork,youwillneedto identifytheserverbythedefault hostname.Thedefaulthostnamefor eachserveristhelast 8charactersofthe BMC MACaddress.TheBMCMACaddress canbefound inthesetuputility,ona labelonthesystem board,andonataghangingfromthefrontoftheserver.Once you havedeployedyourserver,makesurethatyouremovetheBMCMAC address tagfromthefrontoftheserversothatit doesnotimpedeairflowthroughthefront of theserver.

Enabling and configuring SOL using the OSA SMBridge management utility program

ToenableandconfiguretheserverforSOLbyusingtheOSASMBridge

management utilityprogram,youmustupdateandconfiguretheBIOScode;update andconfigurethebaseboardmanagement controller(BMC) firmware;updateand configuretheEthernetcontrollerfirmware;andenabletheoperatingsystem foran SOLconnection.

BIOS update and configuration

ToupdateandconfiguretheBIOScodeto enableSOL,completethefollowing steps:

1. Update theBIOScode:

a. Downloadthelatestversion oftheBIOScodefromhttp://www.ibm.com/

systems/support/.

b. Update theBIOScode,followingtheinstructionsthatcomewiththeupdate filethatyoudownloaded.

2. Update theBMC firmware:

a. Downloadthelatestversion oftheBMCfirmwarefromhttp://www.ibm.com/

systems/support/.

b. Update theBMC firmware,followingtheinstructionsthatcomewiththe updatefilethatyoudownloaded.

3. ConfiguretheBIOSsettings:

a. Whenyou arepromptedto starttheConfiguration/SetupUtilityprogram, restart theserverandpressF1.

b. SelectDevicesandI/OPorts;then, makesurethatthevaluesaresetas follows:

v SerialPortA:Auto-configure v SerialPortB:Auto-configure

c. SelectRemoteConsoleRedirection;then, makesurethatthevaluesare setasfollows:

v RemoteConsoleActive:Enabled v

v RemoteConsoleTextEmulation:ANSI v RemoteConsoleKeyboardEmulation:ANSI v RemoteConsoleActiveAfterBoot:Enabled v RemoteConsoleFlowControl:Hardware

d. Press EsctwicetoexittheRemoteConsoleRedirectionandDevicesand I/OPorts sectionsof theConfiguration/SetupUtilityprogram.

e. SelectAdvancedSetup;then,selectBaseboard ManagementController (BMC)Settings.

f. Set BMCSerialPortAccessModeto Dedicated.

g. Press EsctwicetoexittheBaseboardManagement Controller(BMC) SettingsandAdvancedSetupsectionsof theConfiguration/SetupUtility program.

h. SelectSaveSettings;then,pressEnter.

i. Press Enterto confirm.

j. SelectExitSetup;then,pressEnter.

k. MakesurethatYes,exittheSetupUtilityisselected;then,pressEnter.

Linux configuration

For SOLoperation ontheserver,youmustconfiguretheLinuxoperatingsystemto expose theLinuxinitialization (booting)process.Thisenables usersto loginto the LinuxconsolethroughanSOLsessionanddirectsLinuxoutputtotheserial console.SeethedocumentationforyourspecificLinuxoperating-systemtypefor informationandinstructions.

Useoneofthefollowingproceduresto enableSOLsessionsfor yourLinux operating system.Youmust beloggedinasarootusertoperformthese procedures.

Red HatEnterpriseLinuxES4configuration:

Note: Thisprocedure isbasedonadefaultinstallationofRed HatEnterpriseLinux ES4.Thefilenames,structures,andcommandsmightbedifferentfor other versionsofRed HatLinux.

ToconfigurethegeneralLinuxparametersforSOLoperationwhenyouareusing theRed HatEnterpriseLinuxES4operating system,completethefollowingsteps.

Note: Hardwareflowcontrolprevents characterlossduringcommunicationovera serialconnection.Youmust enableitwhenyouareusinga Linuxoperating system.

1. Add the following line to the end of the # Run gettys in standard runlevels section ofthe/etc/inittabfile.This enableshardwareflowcontrolandenables userstologinthroughtheSOLconsole.

c. Commentoutthemessage=/boot/messagelinebyaddinga# atthebeginning ofthisline.

d. Addthefollowinglinebefore thefirst image=line:
