Theseinstructionsareintended foruserswhoareexperiencedwithsettingupIBM

Installation
guidelines
Before youinstalloptions,readthefollowinginformation:
v Readthesafetyinformationthatbeginsonpagev andtheguidelines in
“Handlingstatic-sensitivedevices”onpage 10.Thisinformationwillhelpyou worksafely.
v Observegood housekeepingintheareawhereyouareworking.Place removed
coversandotherpartsinasafeplace. v
Ifyoumust starttheserverwhiletheservercoverisremoved,makesurethatno
oneisneartheserverandthatnotoolsorotherobjects havebeenleftinside the
server.
v Donotattempttoliftanobjectthatyouthinkistooheavyforyou. Ifyouhaveto
liftaheavyobject,observethefollowingprecautions: – Makesurethatyoucan standsafelywithout slipping.
– Distributetheweightoftheobjectequallybetweenyourfeet.
– Usea slowliftingforce. Nevermovesuddenlyortwistwhenyoulifta heavy
object.
– Toavoidstrainingthemusclesinyourback,liftbystandingorbypushing up
withyourlegmuscles.
v Makesure thatyou haveanadequatenumberofproperlygrounded electrical
outletsfortheserver,monitor,andotherdevices.
v Backupallimportantdatabefore youmakechangestodiskdrives.
v Haveasmallflat-bladeanda smallPhillipsheadscrewdriver available.
v Youdonothavetoturnoff theservertoinstall orreplacehot-swappower
supplies,hot-swapfans,hot-swapdrives,orhot-plugUniversal SerialBus(USB)
devices.However,youmust turnoff theserverbefore performinganystepsthat
involveremovingorinstallingadaptercables.
v Blueona componentindicatestouchpoints,whereyoucangripthecomponent
toremoveit fromorinstallit intheserver,openorclosea latch,andsoon.
v Orangeona componentoranorangelabelonor nearacomponentindicates
thatthecomponentcanbehot-swapped,whichmeansthatif theserverand
operatingsystem supporthot-swapcapability, youcanremoveorinstallthe
componentwhiletheserverisrunning.(Orangecanalso indicatetouchpointson

System
reliability
guidelines
Tohelpensurepropersystem coolingandsystem reliability,makesure thatthe
v Eachofthedrive bayshasa driveora fillerpanelandelectromagnetic
compatibility(EMC)shield installedinit.
v Iftheserverhasredundantpower,each ofthepower-supplybayshas apower
supplyinstalledinit.
v Thereisadequatespacearoundtheservertoallow theservercoolingsystem to
workproperly. Leaveapproximately50mm(2.0in.)ofopenspacearoundthe
frontandrearof theserver.Donotplaceobjects infrontof thefans. Forproper coolingandairflow,replacetheservercoverbeforeturningontheserver. v Youhave followedthecabling instructionsthatcomewithoptional adapters.
v Youhave replacedafailedfanwithin48hours.
v Youhave replacedahot-swapdrivewithin 2minutesof removal.
v Youdonotoperatetheserverwithouttheairbaffle installed.Operatingthe
serverwithout theairbaffle mightcausethemicroprocessorto overheat.

Working
inside
the
server
with
the
power
on
Attention: Staticelectricity thatisreleased tointernalservercomponentswhen
theserverispowered-onmightcausetheserverto halt,whichcouldresultinthe
lossof data.Toavoidthispotentialproblem,alwaysuseanelectrostatic-discharge
wriststrapor othergroundingsystem whenworkinginsidetheserverwiththe
poweron.
Theserversupportshot-plug,hot-add,andhot-swapdevicesandisdesignedto
operatesafelywhileit isturnedonandtheservercoverisremoved. Followthese
guidelines whenyouworkinsidea serverthatisturnedon:
v Avoidwearingloose-fittingclothingonyourforearms.Button long-sleevedshirts
beforeworkinginsidetheserver;donotwearcufflinkswhileyouareworking
insidetheserver.
v Donotallowyournecktieor scarfto hanginsidetheserver.
v
Removejewelry,suchasbracelets,necklaces,rings,andloose-fittingwrist
watches.
v Removeitemsfromyourshirt pocket,suchaspens andpencils,thatcouldfall
intotheserverasyoulean overit.
v Avoiddroppinganymetallicobjects,suchaspaperclips,hairpins,andscrews,
intotheserver.
Handling
static-sensitive
devices
Attention: Staticelectricity candamagetheserverandotherelectronicdevices.
Toavoiddamage,keep static-sensitivedevicesintheirstatic-protectivepackages
until youarereadyto installthem.
Toreducethepossibilityofdamagefromelectrostaticdischarge,observethe
following precautions:
v Limityour movement.Movementcan causestaticelectricity tobuilduparound
you.
v Theuseofa groundingsystemisrecommended.For example,wear an
electrostatic-dischargewriststrap, ifoneisavailable.Always usean
electrostatic-dischargewriststrap orothergroundingsystemwhenworkinginside
theserverwiththepoweron.
v Donottouchsolderjoints,pins,orexposedcircuitry.
v Donotleavethedevice whereotherscanhandleanddamageit.
v Whilethedeviceisstillinitsstatic-protectivepackage,touchit toanunpainted
metalsurface ontheoutsideof theserverforat least2 seconds.This drains
staticelectricityfromthepackageandfromyourbody.
v Removethedevice fromitspackageandinstallit directlyintotheserverwithout
settingdownthedevice. Ifit isnecessary tosetdownthedevice,putitbackinto
itsstatic-protectivepackage.Donotplacethedeviceontheservercoverorona
metalsurface.
v Takeadditional carewhenhandlingdevicesduringcold weather.Heatingreduces
indoorhumidityandincreasesstaticelectricity.
Removing
the
server
cover
Important:Beforeyou installoptionalhardware,makesurethattheserveris
workingcorrectly.Starttheserver,andmakesurethattheoperating systemstarts,
if anoperatingsystemisinstalled,orthata 19990305errorcodeisdisplayed,
indicating thatanoperating systemwasnotfound buttheserverisotherwise
workingcorrectly.Iftheserverisnotworkingcorrectly,seetheProblem Determination andServiceGuidefor diagnosticinformation.
Toremovetheservercover,completethefollowingsteps:
1. Readthesafetyinformationthatbeginsonpagevand“Installationguidelines”
onpage9.
2. If youareplanningonremovingorinstalling amicroprocessor,memorymodule,
PCIadapter,Remote SupervisorAdapter IISlimLine,RAIDcontroller,
simple-swap harddiskdrive,orbattery,turnoff theserverandperipheral
devicesanddisconnectthepowercordsandallexternalcables,if necessary.

Removing
air
baffles
There aretwoairbafflesinsidetheserver.Theseairbafflesdirectairtocool
componentsinsidetheserver.You mighthave toremovethesebafflesto access
certaincomponentsorconnectorsonthesystemboardsuchasDIMMS,IDE
cables, ormicroprocessors.
Toremoveanairbaffle,completethefollowing steps:
1. Readthesafetyinformationthatbeginsonpagevand“Installationguidelines”
onpage9.
2. Turn offtheserverandperipheraldevicesanddisconnectthepowercordsand
allexternal cables,ifnecessary; then,removetheservercover.
3. Toremovetheairbaffle thatisclosestto thewallof theserver,completethe

metalsurfaceontheoutside oftheserver.Then,removetheDIMMfromthe
package.
6. Turn theDIMMsothattheDIMMkeysaligncorrectlywiththeslot.
7. Insert theDIMMintotheconnectorbyaligningtheedgesoftheDIMMwiththe
slotsat theends oftheDIMMconnector.
8. FirmlypresstheDIMMstraightdownintotheconnectorbyapplyingpressure on
both endsoftheDIMMsimultaneously.Theretainingclipssnapintothelocked
positionwhentheDIMMisfirmlyseatedintheconnector.
Note: IfthereisagapbetweentheDIMMandtheretaining clips,theDIMM
hasnotbeencorrectlyinserted;opentheretainingclips, removethe

Toensureproper serveroperation whenyouinstall anadditionalmicroprocessor,
usemicroprocessorsthathavethesamecachesizeandtype,andthesame
clockspeed.Microprocessorinternalandexternalclockfrequencies mustbe
identical.
v Donotremovethefirst microprocessorfromthesystemboardto installthe
secondmicroprocessor.
Thefollowinginstructionsandillustrationsdescribehow toinstall thesecond
microprocessor onthesystemboard.
Toinstallanadditionalmicroprocessor,completethefollowingsteps:
1. Readthesafetyinformationthatbeginsonpagev and“Installationguidelines”
onpage 9.
2. Turnofftheserverandperipheraldevicesanddisconnectthepowercordsand
allexternalcables,if necessary(see“Turningoff theserver”onpage 32).

b. Liftthehingedmicroprocessor bracketframeintoanopenposition.
Removethemicroprocessordust coverfromthebracketframe.Storethe
dustcoverinasafe place.
5. Touchthestatic-protectivepackagethatcontainsthenew microprocessorto
anyunpaintedmetalsurfaceontheserver;then, removethemicroprocessor
fromthepackage.
Attention: Droppingthemicroprocessorduringinstallationorremoval can
damagethecontacts.Also,contaminantsonthemicroprocessor contacts,such
asoilfromyourskin,cancauseconnection failuresbetweenthecontactsand
thesocket.
6. Positionthemicroprocessoroverthemicroprocessorsocket. Usethetriangular
alignmentcutoutonthemicroprocessorsocketandthetriangularalignment
markonthemicroprocessor toassistyouinaligningthemicroprocessor tothe
socket.Then,carefullyplacethemicroprocessor intothesocket.Donotforce
themicroprocessor,it onlyfitsonewayontothesocket.

7. Placethemicroprocessorbracketframe downoverthemicroprocessorandthe
microprocessorsocketto securethemicroprocessor positiononthesocket.
8. Rotatethemicroprocessorreleaseleverintoa closedposition.
9. Placetheheatsinkontopof themicroprocessor withthethermalgreaseside
down.Installthescrewsto securetheheatsinktothesystem board.
