This chapterprovidesbasicinstructionsforinstallinghardware optionsintheserver.

Theseinstructionsareintended foruserswhoareexperiencedwithsettingupIBM

Installation

guidelines

Before youinstalloptions,readthefollowinginformation:

v Readthesafetyinformationthatbeginsonpagev andtheguidelines in

“Handlingstatic-sensitivedevices”onpage 10.Thisinformationwillhelpyou worksafely.

v Observegood housekeepingintheareawhereyouareworking.Place removed

Ifyoumust starttheserverwhiletheservercoverisremoved,makesurethatno

oneisneartheserverandthatnotoolsorotherobjects havebeenleftinside the

Tohelpensurepropersystem coolingandsystem reliability,makesure thatthe

Attention: Staticelectricity thatisreleased tointernalservercomponentswhen

theserverispowered-onmightcausetheserverto halt,whichcouldresultinthe

lossof data.Toavoidthispotentialproblem,alwaysuseanelectrostatic-discharge

wriststrapor othergroundingsystem whenworkinginsidetheserverwiththe

poweron.

Theserversupportshot-plug,hot-add,andhot-swapdevicesandisdesignedto

operatesafelywhileit isturnedonandtheservercoverisremoved. Followthese

guidelines whenyouworkinsidea serverthatisturnedon:

v Avoidwearingloose-fittingclothingonyourforearms.Button long-sleevedshirts

beforeworkinginsidetheserver;donotwearcufflinkswhileyouareworking

insidetheserver.

v Donotallowyournecktieor scarfto hanginsidetheserver.

Removejewelry,suchasbracelets,necklaces,rings,andloose-fittingwrist

watches.

v Removeitemsfromyourshirt pocket,suchaspens andpencils,thatcouldfall

intotheserverasyoulean overit.

v Avoiddroppinganymetallicobjects,suchaspaperclips,hairpins,andscrews,

intotheserver.

Handling

static-sensitive

devices

Attention: Staticelectricity candamagetheserverandotherelectronicdevices.

Toavoiddamage,keep static-sensitivedevicesintheirstatic-protectivepackages

until youarereadyto installthem.

Toreducethepossibilityofdamagefromelectrostaticdischarge,observethe

following precautions:

v Limityour movement.Movementcan causestaticelectricity tobuilduparound

you.

v Theuseofa groundingsystemisrecommended.For example,wear an

electrostatic-dischargewriststrap, ifoneisavailable.Always usean

electrostatic-dischargewriststrap orothergroundingsystemwhenworkinginside

theserverwiththepoweron.

v Removethedevice fromitspackageandinstallit directlyintotheserverwithout

settingdownthedevice. Ifit isnecessary tosetdownthedevice,putitbackinto

metalsurface.

v Takeadditional carewhenhandlingdevicesduringcold weather.Heatingreduces

indoorhumidityandincreasesstaticelectricity.

Removing

server

cover

Important:Beforeyou installoptionalhardware,makesurethattheserveris

workingcorrectly.Starttheserver,andmakesurethattheoperating systemstarts,

if anoperatingsystemisinstalled,orthata 19990305errorcodeisdisplayed,

indicating thatanoperating systemwasnotfound buttheserverisotherwise

workingcorrectly.Iftheserverisnotworkingcorrectly,seetheProblem Determination andServiceGuidefor diagnosticinformation.

Toremovetheservercover,completethefollowingsteps:

1. Readthesafetyinformationthatbeginsonpagevand“Installationguidelines”

onpage9.

2. If youareplanningonremovingorinstalling amicroprocessor,memorymodule,

PCIadapter,Remote SupervisorAdapter IISlimLine,RAIDcontroller,

simple-swap harddiskdrive,orbattery,turnoff theserverandperipheral

devicesanddisconnectthepowercordsandallexternalcables,if necessary.

damagethecontacts.Also,contaminantsonthemicroprocessor contacts,such

asoilfromyourskin,cancauseconnection failuresbetweenthecontactsand

thesocket.

6. Positionthemicroprocessoroverthemicroprocessorsocket. Usethetriangular

alignmentcutoutonthemicroprocessorsocketandthetriangularalignment

markonthemicroprocessor toassistyouinaligningthemicroprocessor tothe

socket.Then,carefullyplacethemicroprocessor intothesocket.Donotforce

themicroprocessor,it onlyfitsonewayontothesocket.
