The Pain Scale

Igor: The next step is – hey Joe, how’s it going, great, lesser, thank you very much. So what do you like to do? Oh really, that’s pretty cool. The pain?

Oh, I sympathize and I’m here for you, right?

Joe: Thank you.

Igor: Have we just covered all the bases?

Students: Yes.

Igor: Now not all as I say will need that. Some people will not need to go over pain, but you get where I’m coming from.

So here’s my question for you, Joe. Where is the pain at right now at this moment on a scale of 1-10? If 10 is excruciating and you cannot tolerate it anymore, and one is like yeah it’s there but you don’t really care, where would it be?

Joe: Six or seven.

Igor: Beautiful. Six or seven, easy. It gives you a place to be in. The next thing I’m going to ask just to race around that is it always like that or is it sometimes stronger, sometimes weaker?

Joe: Yes, sometimes stronger, sometimes weaker.

Hypnotic Pain Control ©Street Hypnosis All Rights Reserved Igor: Thank you. This is very typical by the way, what has he just told me if it’s

sometimes stronger and sometimes weaker? That it can be diminished.

There are conditions in which it doesn’t have to be there. Does that make sense to you?

Now he doesn’t know he’s just acknowledged it but I already have that thing there. I might say oh, so sometimes it is weaker, isn’t it?

Joe: Yes.

Igor: And I might even emphasize it by saying something along the lines of – and please this is not something to memorize – so if you could have more of those experiences where it’s diminished and it stays diminished like that, if that was like the peak, that would make your life a lot easier, wouldn’t it?

Joe: Yes.

Igor: Of course, the ideal would be for it to totally disappear. Now you haven’t heard me have this conversation before, have you – with Russ? The ideal is for it to be removed entirely but as a Plan B, that’s a really good Plan B.

Would that be fair to say?

Joe: Yes, that would be great.

Igor: Great. What have I just done here? I understand where the scale is, which means he now has a process of tracking it improving. Number two, he’s just accepted that he doesn’t have to remove it, he doesn’t have to fight it anymore, which means a lot of the tension about I just want it gone, has gone.

If he said no I want it gone, then I have my work cut out still because he’s not being willing to interact with his own body in a new way. He’s too adamant about what must happen and that’s why it cannot. Does that make sense to everyone?

Hypnotic Pain Control ©Street Hypnosis All Rights Reserved As soon as I get that commitment – please don’t do this in the role play. I’ll show you the next little step that is really kind of fun, but this is not for the role play at this point. We’ll cover that in the afternoon session with the actual techniques. I just want you to see how naturally it fits in, although I’m putting it in out of sequence at this point. Is that okay with you?

So it’s six at the moment and you said that sometimes it’s less and if you’re going to be like that, then you would be okay with it. It’s a good Plan B, is that correct?

Joe: Yes.

Igor: I’m curious, what just happened to that pain or that sensation as you thought of it like that?

Joe: It changed.

Igor: This will happen in maybe 60 or 70% of the cases. I wonder what’s going on there.

Joe: I don’t know.

Igor: Something’s happening, isn’t it? Is anyone beginning to recognize something going on here? A non-awareness set? Do you think it will continue?

Joe: I don’t know.

Igor: Well, let’s find out. Again, do you see where we’re going with this? Please don’t do this as a technique. I’ll talk you through how that works. I just want you to see how smoothly it fits into what you’re doing in your conversation.

Hypnotic Pain Control ©Street Hypnosis All Rights Reserved Here’s the beauty. If it changes up and it gets worse, it’s still no big deal; if it changes down, great; if it doesn’t change at all, you’re just asking, right?

Have you done the pain control yet? No, so it doesn’t matter what the response is it’s a very natural place you can go towards if the situation presents itself.

I’d say in my experience, 60 to 70% of the people – maybe a little bit more – will have exactly that reaction. It’s very rare that they don’t. It happens, and you know who usually doesn’t have the reaction? It’s the one that says it has to be gone, I don’t like it. They’re so adamant about it that nothing’s changed in them, so how can that have changed?

As soon as you can ease that attitude off, very often the stress has gone and what do we know about stress? It amplifies pain. So if they dissolve the stress that they’re causing themselves, of course the pain is going to diminish. It’s a natural reaction.

You can get on the coattails of that and ride it into a technique for full healing or a massively diminished sensation. Do you see how naturally that fits in? It’s the mindset that counts.

Step three here is to get your scale for pain, and the typical one here – the standard one is 1-10. There’s no magic in the number, folks. You realize that, right? It’s just there as a simple standard scale that people can wrap their heads around. Is it easy to ask about that scale?
