Planning your Twitter Activity

To go back to my example of trying to lose weight, as well as tracking how successful you’re being, a weight loss plan always works much better if you plan what you’re going to eat each day and what exercise you’re going to do. Again your Twitter marketing will be more successful if you plan your activity.

Putting a plan in place will help you make sure you do as much as you can to achieve your Twitter goals. If you just login to Twitter whenever you feel like it and tweet whatever comes to mind at that moment you won’t have much success. Having a plan that gives you daily, weekly and monthly actions to take will keep you consistent and you’ll have a much better chance of success.

Here’s a list of activities you could include in your Twitter plan:

Daily

• Check @connect tab (mentions section), reply to anyone who is talking to you and thank those who have retweeted you

• Check your @connect tab (interactions section) to see who has followed you recently – follow them back if they fit your target network

• Follow 10 new people

• Browse your saved searches – are there any tweets you can get involved with or retweet?

• Browse your lists – are there any tweets you can get involved with or retweet?

• Schedule 2 tweets that link back to your own content (See Bonus Section: Hootsuite for details on scheduling)

• Browse Alltop or Google Alerts for curated content

• Schedule 3 tweets that link back to your curated content

• Schedule a tip that will be useful to your followers

• Schedule a question to prompt engagement

• Schedule a relevant quote to motivate or entertain your followers

• Schedule a link to your sign up page (your free report or discount voucher)

• Check the Trending Topics – are any of them relevant to what you do – can you write a tweet around one of them?

Weekly

• Make a note in your diary of one or two relevant tweetchats to participate in

• Update your tracking spreadsheet

Monthly

• Arrange a one-to-one meeting offline

• Make a note in your diary of a tweetup you can attend

Obviously you don’t have to do all of them. If you’re just starting out it may seem a bit overwhelming, so take it at your own pace. The more you use Twitter in these ways the more successful you’re going to be at achieving your goals, but if you give yourself too much to do then you’ll give up.

As Twitter is in real-time if you only tweet once per week then the likelihood is very few people will see it. I advise that you try and tweet at least 4 times per day, every day. But if you take time to plan this out it’s not as difficult as it seems.

Put an appointment in your diary for your Twitter activity and you’ll be more likely to stick to it. After all if you were attending an offline networking event you’d mark it in your diary and you would turn up!

That’s where Hootsuite is a fantastic help.

It’s a free online dashboard that you add your Twitter account to, and you can then schedule your tweets to go out on the day you want and at the time you want. Hootsuite then automatically tweets them for you.

When you sign up to Hootsuite it will automatically take you through a process to add your social media accounts. When you add Twitter your dashboard will look similar to this:

You’ll then need to add the Pending Tweets Column (or it may say Scheduled Tweets) by clicking on Add Stream. Notice there are several other Twitter streams you could add.

You can then click on the little calendar icon to select the date and time you want it to go out.

But you still need to monitor your Twitter account on a daily basis, doing the other activities mentioned in the Planning Section.
