Thissection providesinformationaboutinstallingand configuringtheIBMstorage serverforthefirst time.Torecoverthesystemif youhaveaproblemthatcannotbesolvedbyanyothermeans,see “RecoveringtheIBMstorageserver” onpage8.
YoucanaccesstheIBMstorageserverinterface fromeitheraremote consoleora localconsole.Aremote consoleisasystem thatisnotdirectlyattachedtotheIBMstorageserver,anditusesa network connectionwiththeDynamicHostConfigurationProtocol(DHCP)oranassignedstaticIPaddressto communicatewith theIBM storageserver.Alocalconsoleconsistsofamonitor,keyboard, andmousethat areattacheddirectlytotheIBMstorageserver.
AremoteconsoleisthedefaultmethodforaccessingtheIBMstorageserverinterface. Theremoteconsolesystemmustmeet thefollowingrequirements:

TheWindowsStorageServerManagement Consoleopens intheMicrosoft ManagementConsole(MMC), providinganeasyand convenientmeansforadministration.TheManagement Consoleopens
automaticallyonceyouareloggedintoWindows StorageServer2003R2,butif theconsoledoesnot automaticallyopen,orif itisclosed,youcanreopenthemanagementconsole.
ToopentheWindows StorageServerManagementConsole: 1. Click Start.
2. Select AllPrograms.
3. Select Administrativetools.
4. Click WindowsStorageServerManagement,andtheManagementConsolewillopen.
5. Once insidetheManagementConsole,theFileServerManagement(Local)nodeinthelefthand

Single
instance
storage
Thesingleinstancestorage (SIS)feature dramaticallyreducesthestoragecapacitythatisutilizedfor duplicatecopiesof identicalfiles.Onceithasbeenimplemented,SISfunctionalityrunsasa background servicethatconsolidatesredundantfiledataintoa singlecommonstore.Duplicate filesarereplacedwith linksthatappeartoendusersandtoapplicationstobethesameastheoriginalfiles.SISfunctionalityis aproventechnology thathasbeen deployedinlargeenterpriseenvironmentstosignificantlyreducethe amountofstorage capacitythatisconsumedbyduplicatefiles.Byreducingthestoragecapacitythatis requiredforduplicatefiledata,customerscanmaximizetheirexistingstorage resources.
SingleInstanceStorage(SIS)recoversdisk spacebyreducingtheamountofredundantdatastoredona server,byidentifyingidenticalfiles,storingasingle copyofthefilein acentralrepositoryandreplacing thefileswithpointerstothefileintheSIScommonstore.SISworksautomaticallywithoutanyend-user involvement.TheadministratorcanenableSISonapervolume basis.

multimasterreplicationenginethatsupportsschedulingand bandwidththrottling.DFSReplication usesanew compressionalgorithm knownasRemoteDifferentialCompression(RDC).RDCisa protocolthatcanbeusedtoefficientlyupdatefilesovera limited-bandwidthnetwork. RDCdetects insertions,removals,re-arrangementsofdatainfiles,enabling DFSReplicationtoreplicateonlythe deltas(changes) whenfilesareupdated.

Recovering
the
IBM
storage
server
Usetherecoveryprocessto restoretheIBM storageserverproducttoitsoriginaldefaultconfiguration afteranunrecoverable systemfailurehasoccurred.Therecovery processformatstheharddisksand reinstallstheoperatingsystem,devicedrivers,andapplications.
Attention: Makesurethatyouhavesavedalldatafromtheprimarypartitionandall locallyattached
secondarypartitionsoftheIBMstorageserverbefore youperformthis procedure. TorecovertheIBMstorageserver,completethefollowingsteps:
1. TurnofftheIBMstorageserver.
2. Disconnecttheserverfromallexternalnetworks,includingstoragenetworkssuchasFibreChannel.
3. Connectpower,keyboard,monitor,and mousetotheIBM storageserver.
4. Pressthepower-controlbutton.
5. Makesurethattheredundantarrayofindependentdisks(RAID)configurationiscorrect.Ifyou
havecreatednewRAIDlogicaldrives,thefirstarraymust beat least36GB.
6. InserttheIBMstorageservermedia 1oftheRecoveryCD,intotheCDdrive.TheIBM storageserver
recoveryCDautomaticallystarts,andtheRecoveryMainMenuisdisplayed. 7. PressEntertostart therecovery process.Thetermsand conditionsare displayed.
8. Readthetermsandconditions.Click Yifyouaccepttheconditions.TheATTENTION-READTHIS
BEFOREYOUCONTINUE screenisdisplayed.
Attention: Thisisthelastopportunity tostoptherecoveryprocess.Allunsaveddatawillbelost
whentherecoveryprocessisstarted.
9. Readtheinformationand clickYtostarttherecovery process.Astatuswindowopens duringthe
