Installing

the

IBM

storage

server

Thissection providesinformationaboutinstallingand configuringtheIBMstorage serverforthefirst time.Torecoverthesystemif youhaveaproblemthatcannotbesolvedbyanyothermeans,see “RecoveringtheIBMstorageserver” onpage8.

YoucanaccesstheIBMstorageserverinterface fromeitheraremote consoleora localconsole.Aremote consoleisasystem thatisnotdirectlyattachedtotheIBMstorageserver,anditusesa network connectionwiththeDynamicHostConfigurationProtocol(DHCP)oranassignedstaticIPaddressto communicatewith theIBM storageserver.Alocalconsoleconsistsofamonitor,keyboard, andmousethat areattacheddirectlytotheIBMstorageserver.

AremoteconsoleisthedefaultmethodforaccessingtheIBMstorageserverinterface. Theremoteconsolesystemmustmeet thefollowingrequirements:

v Itmustbe runninga Windows

® operatingsystem.

v

ItmusthaveMicrosoftTerminalServicesClient(mstsc.exe) installed.

v Itmustbe connectedtothenetworkthattheIBMstorage serverisconnected to.

UseoneofthefollowingprocedurestoinstalltheIBMstorage server.

Installing

remote

console

ToinstalltheIBMstorage server,completethefollowingsteps:

1. Notetheserialnumberoftheserver.SeetheIBMInstallationGuidethatcomeswith theserverforthe

locationoftheserialnumber.

2. Unpackand installtheserver.See theIBM InstallationGuidethatcomeswith theserverforinstallation

information.

3. Connecttheservertoyour networkornetworks.

4. Pressthepower-controlbutton.Wait 10to15minutesfortheIBM storageserverinstallationprocess

tobecompleted.

Attention: Unexpectedresultscanoccurifyouturnofftheserver,pressa key,or usethemouse

duringtheinitialstartupoftheserver.

5. Ontheremotesystem,clickStart andthenclick Run.The“Run”window opens.

6. Typemstscand clickOK.TheRemoteDesktop Connectionwindowopens.

7. InComputer,typethesystemnameorIPAddress oftheIBM storageserverandthen clickConnect.

Note: ThedefaultsystemnameisIBMxxxxxxx.Thevalue xxxxxxxistheserialnumberoftheserver.

UsetheIBMstorageserverinterfacefor allIBMstorageservertasks.Thissectionprovidesinformation aboutthefollowingtasks thatyoumustcompletetousetheIBM storageserver:

1. StarttheIBM storageserverinterface(managementconsole).

2. Createdatapartitionsif youare usingtheIBMstorage serverforthefirst time.

3. Learn abouttheadministrationtasks thatyoucanperformusingtheIBMstorageserver.

Management

console

TheWindowsStorageServerManagement Consoleopens intheMicrosoft ManagementConsole(MMC), providinganeasyand convenientmeansforadministration.TheManagement Consoleopens

automaticallyonceyouareloggedintoWindows StorageServer2003R2,butif theconsoledoesnot automaticallyopen,orif itisclosed,youcanreopenthemanagementconsole.

ToopentheWindows StorageServerManagementConsole: 1. Click Start.

2. Select AllPrograms.

3. Select Administrativetools.

4. Click WindowsStorageServerManagement,andtheManagementConsolewillopen.

5. Once insidetheManagementConsole,theFileServerManagement(Local)nodeinthelefthand

navigationtreewilltakethedefaultfocus.Thecenter panewillprovidevariouscommonscenarios to choose fromtobetterassistintheadministrationof WindowsStorageServer2003R2.

Single

instance

storage

Thesingleinstancestorage (SIS)feature dramaticallyreducesthestoragecapacitythatisutilizedfor duplicatecopiesof identicalfiles.Onceithasbeenimplemented,SISfunctionalityrunsasa background servicethatconsolidatesredundantfiledataintoa singlecommonstore.Duplicate filesarereplacedwith linksthatappeartoendusersandtoapplicationstobethesameastheoriginalfiles.SISfunctionalityis aproventechnology thathasbeen deployedinlargeenterpriseenvironmentstosignificantlyreducethe amountofstorage capacitythatisconsumedbyduplicatefiles.Byreducingthestoragecapacitythatis requiredforduplicatefiledata,customerscanmaximizetheirexistingstorage resources.

SingleInstanceStorage(SIS)recoversdisk spacebyreducingtheamountofredundantdatastoredona server,byidentifyingidenticalfiles,storingasingle copyofthefilein acentralrepositoryandreplacing thefileswithpointerstothefileintheSIScommonstore.SISworksautomaticallywithoutanyend-user involvement.TheadministratorcanenableSISonapervolume basis.

data

partitions

Thissection providesoverviewinformationaboutcreatingdatapartitions.Youmust configurethedata partitionstomeettheneedsofyourenterprise.For moreinformationaboutdatapartitions,clickHelp fromtheIBMstorageserverdesktop.

Usethefollowingprocedureasanexampleofhow tocreateadatapartition.

Note: Thisprocedureisanexampleand doesnotprovidespecific configurationvalues.Foreachwindow

thatcanbeusedtospecifyconfigurationvalues,youcaneitheracceptthedefaultvaluesorspecify differentvalues.

1. ClickStartProgramsAdministrationToolsComputerManagementDiskManagement.The

“DiskManagement”windowopens.

2. ClickintheunallocateddiskspaceforDisk1.Diagonallinesare displayedintheselectedarea.

Attention: DonotselectDisk0:(IBM_PRELOAD(C:)).Disk0isreservedforuseonlybytheIBM

3. Right-clicktheselecteddiskspaceandclickNew Partition.TheNewPartitionwizardopens.

MicrosoftServicesforNFSallowsusersofUNIX–basedcomputerstostoreand accessfilesonWindows StorageServer2003R2usingtheNetworkFileSystem(NFS)protocol.Allofyour UNIXclientswillbe abletoaccesstheresources usingtheNFSprotocolwithnochangesrequired.

UseStorageManagerforSANstocreateand assignLUNs,manage connectionsbetweenLUNsandthe serversinyour SAN,and setthesecuritypropertiesforiSCSIstoragesubsystems.

TheDistributedFileSystem(DFS)solutioninWindows StorageServer2003R2provides simplified, fault-tolerantaccesstofilesandWAN-friendlyreplication.DistributedFileSystemconsistsoftwo technologies:

v DFSNamespaces.FormerlyknownasDistributedFileSystem,DFSNamespacesallowsadministrators

togroupshared folderslocatedondifferentserversand presentthemtousersasa virtualtreeof foldersknownasa namespace.Anamespaceprovidesnumerous benefits,includingincreased availabilityofdata,loadsharing,andsimplifieddatamigration.

v DFSReplication.ThesuccessortoFileReplication service(FRS),DFSReplicationisanew state-based,

multimasterreplicationenginethatsupportsschedulingand bandwidththrottling.DFSReplication usesanew compressionalgorithm knownasRemoteDifferentialCompression(RDC).RDCisa protocolthatcanbeusedtoefficientlyupdatefilesovera limited-bandwidthnetwork. RDCdetects insertions,removals,re-arrangementsofdatainfiles,enabling DFSReplicationtoreplicateonlythe deltas(changes) whenfilesareupdated.

IndexingServiceextractstheinformationfroma setofdocumentsand organizesit inawaythatmakesit quickand easytoaccessthatinformationthroughtheSearchfunction forcomputersrunningMicrosoft Windows2000orMicrosoftWindows XP.Thisinformationcanincludetextfromwithina document(its contents),andthecharacteristicsandparametersofthedocument(itsproperties),suchastheauthor’s

name.Oncetheindexiscreatedyoucanquerytheindexfordocumentsthatcontainkeywords,phrases, orproperties.For example,youcanqueryalldocumentscontainingtheword ″product,″oryoucan queryforallMicrosoftOfficedocumentswrittenbya specificauthor.IndexingServicereturnsa listofall documentsthatmeetyour searchcriteria.

SingleInstanceStorage(SIS)recoversdiskspacebyreducingtheamountofredundantdatastoredona volumebyidentifyingidenticalfiles,storingonlya singlecopyofthefileintheSIScommon storeand replacingthefileswith pointerstothefileintheSIScommonstore.

PrintManagementisanupdatedMicrosoftManagementConsolesnap-inthatyoucanusetoview and manageprintersand printserversinyourorganization.YoucanusePrintManagementfromany computerrunningWindows StorageServer2003R2,andyoucanmanageallnetworkprintersonprint serversrunningWindows2000Server,WindowsServer 2003,WindowsStorageServer2003,Windows Server2003R2,orWindows StorageServer2003R2.

PrintManagementprovidesdetailssuchasthequeuestatus,printername,drivername,andserver name.Youcanalso setcustomviewsbyusingthePrintManagementfiltering capability.Forexample, youcancreatea viewthatdisplaysonlyprintersina particularerrorstate. Youcanalso configurePrint Managementtosende-mailnotificationsorrunscriptswhena printerorprintserverneedsattention. Thefilteringcapabilityalsoallows youtobulkeditprintjobs,suchascancelingall printjobs atonce. Youcanalso deletemultipleprintersat thesame time.

IBMDirectorisa comprehensivesystems-managementsolution.Itprovidesa powerfulsuiteoftoolsand utilitiesto automatemanyoftheprocessesrequiredtomanagesystemsproactively.For example,youcan useit toperformpreventivemaintenance,diagnostic monitoring,andtroubleshooting.Aninterface provideseasyaccesstobothlocalandremote systems.

Files

TivoliContinuousDataProtectionforFilesisa real-time,continuousdataprotectionsolutionfor workstationsandlaptopcomputers.Insteadofwaitingforascheduledinterval,TivoliContinuousData ProtectionforFilesbacksupyourmostimportantfilesthemomenttheyaresavedbycreating acopy locallyfor“anywhere restore”andsendinga copytothefileserver.

Eachtimea clientsavesadocument,thesoftwarewillimmediatelyandtransparentlymakea versioned copylocally(ontheharddisk)and itwillqueue-upa copytobetransmittedtotheFileServer thatit is deployedfrom.

Usethisprogramtoconfigurearraysand logicaldrives ontheServeRAIDcontroller.ServeRAIDManager operatesintwoways: instartable-CDmodeand asaninstalledprogram.ServeRAIDManagerisnot preinstalled.Thefilesare ontheharddisk.Toinstall ServeRAIDManager,double-click theInstall ServeRAIDManagericonontheIBMstorage serverdesktop.

Recovering

the

IBM

storage

server

Usetherecoveryprocessto restoretheIBM storageserverproducttoitsoriginaldefaultconfiguration afteranunrecoverable systemfailurehasoccurred.Therecovery processformatstheharddisksand reinstallstheoperatingsystem,devicedrivers,andapplications.

Attention: Makesurethatyouhavesavedalldatafromtheprimarypartitionandall locallyattached

secondarypartitionsoftheIBMstorageserverbefore youperformthis procedure. TorecovertheIBMstorageserver,completethefollowingsteps:

1. TurnofftheIBMstorageserver.

2. Disconnecttheserverfromallexternalnetworks,includingstoragenetworkssuchasFibreChannel.

3. Connectpower,keyboard,monitor,and mousetotheIBM storageserver.

4. Pressthepower-controlbutton.

5. Makesurethattheredundantarrayofindependentdisks(RAID)configurationiscorrect.Ifyou

havecreatednewRAIDlogicaldrives,thefirstarraymust beat least36GB.

6. InserttheIBMstorageservermedia 1oftheRecoveryCD,intotheCDdrive.TheIBM storageserver

recoveryCDautomaticallystarts,andtheRecoveryMainMenuisdisplayed. 7. PressEntertostart therecovery process.Thetermsand conditionsare displayed.

8. Readthetermsandconditions.Click Yifyouaccepttheconditions.TheATTENTION-READTHIS

BEFOREYOUCONTINUE screenisdisplayed.

Attention: Thisisthelastopportunity tostoptherecoveryprocess.Allunsaveddatawillbelost

whentherecoveryprocessisstarted.

9. Readtheinformationand clickYtostarttherecovery process.Astatuswindowopens duringthe

recoveryprocess.

10. RemoveRecoveryCD,Media 1and inserttheremainingIBMstorageserverRecoveryCDsintothe

CDdrivewhenyouareprompted.

11. WhenthelastCDhasbeenremoved,pressEnter. Theinstallationprocesscantakeupto1hourto

becompleted. The“LogontoWindows”window opens.

12. Typetheusernameandpassword. Thedefaultusernameisadministrator,and thedefault

passwordispassw0rd.

13. ClickOK.TheIBMstorage serverdesktopisdisplayed.

14. ClickShut Down.
