MDM Engineering is a minerals process engineering

and project management company, operating from

South Africa. We have a proven track record of more

than 24 years experience and are in a position to

undertake small, medium and large scale mineral

projects on a global basis.

MDM Engineering listed on the London Stock Exchange (AIM) in May 2008.

MDM Engineering prides itself on its ability to provide clients with a complete package that delivers on both cost efficiency and performance, encompassing preliminary and final feasibility studies, through to plant design, construction and commissioning. At MDM Engineering, we conduct business with a willingness to look beyond the expected. This is also our definitive ethos in the history of the company. The principle is simple: no two ore bodies are alike, therefore no two process plants can be identical. Our attention to detail and lateral problem solving skills inherent in all we set out to do, provide us with technical innovation and unlocks superior economic value for our clients. We invite you to take a closer look at how we go about business at MDM Engineering. We trust you will discover that when it comes to delivering a project on time and within the required budget, nothing is taken for granted.

Industry Experience

Our engineering and project management staff offer a vast level of experience in the mineral resource industry. This covers all mineral types, many regions internationally and the most modern extraction and processing techniques.

Metallurgical Process

Development

One of MDM Engineering’s key skills is the interpretation of testwork results and the development of the most suitable process design for each individual project. This phase of a project is supervised by our experienced process engineers, ensuring that the entire procedure - from sample generation to testwork and process selection - is optimal for the project. We will assist clients in reviewing resource data for the selection of testwork samples to represent an ore body.

MDM Engineering maintains close links with a number of well known and respected metallurgical laboratories globally. In many cases, MDM Engineering has developed an innovative testwork programme on behalf of the client, placing emphasis on the preparation of practical data, which ultimately provides the basis of plant design. This allows MDM Engineering to apply optimal and accurate process design.

MDM ENGINEERING

AT THE CORE

(7)

Process Engineering

MDM Engineering’s process engineering skills include:

• Evaluation of testwork

• Generation of process options

• Development of process flow diagrams

• Development of piping and instrumentation diagrams

• Process engineering and design

• Process trade off studies

Detailed Engineering and Design

Through in-house resources and associations, MDM Engineering develops the engineering and design from early concepts and initial evaluations, through to detailing and execution. The design team includes civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation software and piping engineers with the relevant draughts persons.

A team is designated for each project and a close working relationship between this assigned team and the client ensures that the highest possible engineering standards are attained and applied.

MDM Engineering’s engineering department makes use of world class software and procedures to execute the work, including:

• Revit Structure and Robot Analysis for structural design

• Strap Rebar Mode and Prokon for civil design

• Planswift for mechanical design

• AutoCad plans for piping design and 3D modelling

• ETAP for electrical design

• Helix Conveyor design package

Project Management

MDM Engineering’s project management capabilities provide a well-disciplined and systematic approach to project execution. In order to ensure successful project completion, on time and within budget, we co-ordinate the various disciplines, while conforming to the required quality and safety standards. We base our systems and procedures on PMBOK guidelines, which are consolidated in our Quality Management System (QMS).This ensures logical project execution processes to guide the Project Manager in delivering the project efficiently and professionally.

The systems MDM typically use are:

• MS Project & Primavera – scheduling with custom S-curve generator

• Access Dimension Accounts (costing system) – Focal Point (web-based procurement system)

• Cost-Trac – procurement & costing system (optional)

• Customised timesheet system with smartphone access

• SharePoint – web-based project document control (project website)

(9)

Construction Management

MDM Engineering’s approach to construction and project management differs significantly from other engineering companies. MDM Engineering uses its own construction teams for key execution projects with a fast-track nature. This has allowed MDM Engineering to complete these difficult projects on time and within budget.

For other projects, MDM Engineering uses its skilled construction managers and supervisors to manage local or regional contractors, when available to construct metallurgical processing plants. Should no suitable local or regional contractors exist, MDM Engineering utilises its own managers and supervisors to manage a team of imported, direct hire, skilled artisans together with local labour.

On EPCM type contracts our construction teams manage selected sub-contractors on behalf of the client, making use of industry best practices to control the budget and schedule.

MDM Engineering’s construction management skills include:

• Site safety and environmental management plans

• Civil work

• Steel erection

• Electrical and instrumentation installation

• Mechanical erection / installation

• Quality control

• Industrial relations

• Site administration

Commissioning

Plants designed and constructed by MDM Engineering are commissioned by a specialised commissioning team, with the assistance of our client’s plant operators. The commissioning team works with design engineers during plant commissioning, and is responsible for hand-over to the client. These engineers will provide training to the client’s engineers and operating staff.

(10)

Cost Engineering and

Procurement

MDM Engineering’s team of experienced cost engineers have access to a detailed database of applicable costs and unit rates. MDM Engineering’s ongoing projects are updated onto this database. MDM Engineering has access to a mining supply industry with over 100 years of experience at the forefront of world mining technology. MDM Engineering has identified the leading suppliers in the various fields and boasts the purchasing power to negotiate the best prices and deliveries for clients. This guarantees that each project is equipped with the latest technology of the highest standards.

Professionals in procurement and contract administration work closely with the project managers and discipline engineers to ensure the best equipment suppliers and sub-contractors are secured. Our expediting team monitors the performance of these suppliers, ensuring that delivery dates are met.
