Scooterboard Games & Activities

Introduction

*Scooters activities are great for all ages and abilities

*Activities can range from individual to large groups

*Can offer teamwork, sportsmanship, fun, & excitement

*Scooter activities level the playing field, which can make it fun for everyone

*Scooters can provide a good workout on any smooth surface

Safety

*Keep hands clear from the bottom of the scooter board – use handles only to carry them.

*Recommend to sit or lay on the scooter board. Do not stand on them!

*Tie back long hair and tuck in loose clothing.

*Consider face protection when using goalies or use soft equipment (nerf balls).

*Check casters regularly

*Prevent scooters from crashing into others

Individual Learning Experiences 1. One hand on scooter 2. Two hands on scooter

3. Two hands and 1 knee on scooter 4. Two hands and one foot on scooter 5. Kneel on scooter

6. Sit on rear, move backwards 7. Sit on rear, move forwards 8. Lie on stomach, move forward 9. Lie on Stomach, move backwards 10. Seal walk (toes or thighs on board)

11. Run holding scooter board with two hands, build up speed place knees on board and glide as far as you can.

Sample activities/games

1. Warm up – Explore different ways to move around the space on a scooter.

Use a variety of individual learning experiences. You may also consider using obstacles such as hoops, pylons, chairs etc.

2. Scooter Tag – Give 2-4 students foam ball to be “IT”. On the go signal, the chase begins (choose different ways to move on the scooterboard). Those students who are “IT” must tag others with the ball. If a player is tagged then they become the new “IT”. Variations to the game might be to add a task card if tagged or to be frozen with arms stretched out, so a player may unfreeze you by travelling underneath the arms.

3. Scooter-Chute—Give every second person around the parachute a scooter.

Have these students sit or lie down on the scooter. Students holding the parachute raise it above their heads. The students on the scooters move into the centre and back out using a number of different ways (ex. on rear using feet moving forwards or backwards, on stomach using hands moving

forwards or backwards) before the chute comes down. Once students are out from the chute they exchange with someone holding the chute.

Another activity using the same set up is to have students holding the parachute waist high with their right hands facing counterclockwise.

Students on scooterboards go underneath facing clockwise. The parachute holders walk, skip, or jog around holding onto the chute while students on scooters move in the opposite direction. After 30-60 seconds have them switch roles and repeat.

4. 4x 100 M – The object is to perform the race as fast as possible. You will need 2 scooterboards and 1 link up for each group of 4(modify group numbers if needed), and cones to mark lanes. Each team has 4

participants. One person, while lying on two linked scooters will “swim” by using their hands to propel themselves to the end of the gym and back.

Then the next person will follow, until all members have completed the

“swim”.

5. Chariots of Fire – The object of the event is to complete the race as fast as possible (in a safe manner of course!). You will need scooterboards,

helmets and 2 sticks for each scooterboard (cut off hockey sticks, broom handles work great for this). Set up in a relay line. One participant, the

“Arabian Steed”, will pull the “Charioteer” who is sitting on the scooter board to the end and return. The Charioteer holds the end of the stick with their hands while the Arabian Steed holds the sticks under their arms.

When you return to your line the Arabian Steed becomes the new

Charioteer and the next person in line becomes the new Arabian Steed.

You may also set this up as a race around an oval.

6. Scooter Hockey-played similar to regular floor hockey, instead using

scooterboards to move about the gym. You will need 12-24 scooterboards, hockey nets, foam balls, pinnies and ministicks. Depending on the space available and number of participants each team can have 6-12 players on the floor. Each participant has a stick in each hand. Shifts are 3 minutes in length. Participants are free to travel anywhere in the gym (unless you choose to restrict players to offensive,defensive zones). Players must shoot from outside a designated crease area. Use only a stick to contact the ball

(hands and feet are not permitted). Defenders are allowed to hit the ball off an opponents stick. After each goal start with a ball roll towards the centre and the players scoot forward to get it. As a safety precaution, remind students to watch out for other student’s fingers and toes when moving around on the scooter.

7. Scooterboard Basketball (Bucketball)- The object is to shoot a ball into the opposing teams bucket. You will need enough scooters for two or four teams, pinnies, 2 Rubbermaid buckets(or something similar), and 2-3 gatorskin balls. Each team has 6-12 participants on the floor for each shift (3minutes). Participants are free to move anywhere on the gym foor. They may not travel while in possession of a ball (they may pivot). They may possess the ball for up to 5 seconds. Shots must be taken from outside a designated crease area. Only defenders can enter the crease area to retrieve a ball. Defenders may not grab a ball out of an opponents hand.

Defending team gets possession after each basket. 1 point is awarded for a straight shot, two points awarded for a shot that is bounced off the wall or backboard.

8. Scooter Team Handball- Is played like regular handball except players move on scooters. It is a great way to develop throwing and catching skills as well as teamwork. Object of the game is to score by throwing the ball into an opponents net. You will need scooter boards for two or four teams of 5-8 players, pinnies, hockey nets or folding mats standing upright, gatorskin balls. Each team has 5-8 players depending on space, size, availability of equipment etc. Each team plays for 3 minutes. Players may travel anywhere on the floor, but may not travel while in possession of the ball (pivot only). Participants may only have 1 ball at a time for approximately 5 seconds. The offensive team must shoot from outside a designated crease area (only the goalie is permitted in the crease). Defenders must give 1 meter from an opponent who has the ball. A defender may not grab the ball out of an opponents hand. The defensive team gets possession after each goal. 1 point for each goal.
