We are all disciples. If you consider yourself a Christian, along with that comes a call to live differently. We are not called to think about ourselves first and exclusively. We all already know that. But do you understand the call that is upon you to be a “minister” - someone involved in ministry?

The new Hospitality Ministry is not a volunteer church job. It is a ministry of helping people to feel welcomed and important; not just to St. John’s, but to the kingdom of God.

Kindness is one of the most powerful, life-changing ministries we have from which to choose. Any other ministry, if not done with kindness, may be totally undermined. To feed someone that is hungry with an attitude of resentment; to bring someone in from the weather, but then treat them with hostility; to try to show someone the Gospel without caring about them first; all of these are useless without kindness.

We need several coordinators to help with our Hospitality Ministry. You will have the help and support of Donna Bruce and Wayne Shirley. You will have their encouragement and ideas. You will know their kindness. Will you help?

St. John’s Welcome Statement

“We are people of varied opinions and backgrounds. We worship in

varied ways. We live and think in varied ways. We are drawn together

in the everyday challenge to be more like Jesus. None of us is perfect.

None of us has all the answers. We hope to lead with love and grace.

We try not to judge. It is our wish that every person will discover the

support of friends and the comfort of home with us. Welcome!”

have raised almost $35,000 for

Albuquerque Healthcare for the Homeless.

Proceeds from tickets sales benefit that organization in their entirety.

Musicales will be held July 16 and 23, and start at 7:30 PM. Tickets are

$20 ($10 for students). For a listing of musicians, and to purchase

tickets, go to: www.thursdayeveningmusicales.org

July Special Offering

We have a chance to help feed the homeless and hungry people in our community during the month of July.

With your help, Project Share is open for dinner six nights a week and serves almost 40,000 meals per year! St. John’s has been a great financial supporter and provides hands-on help as well. For example, in cooperation with the food ministry, several adult Sunday School classes and other groups and individuals now serve meals nine times a year.

You generous gifts of money and/or time are much appreciated.

Special Worship Music in July

YOU MATTER TO US!

In our large congregation, a person

may be hospitalized, go to a rehabilitation or nursing facility,

or have some other personal crisis in their life, and the

pastoral staff and members of the congregation may not learn

about it until much later. We ask you to help us by calling the

church office or one of the pastors if you become aware of a

difficult situation

(health or other issue)

in someone’s life.

Please call 883-9717 and let us know or, if it is an emergency,

call the Emergency Pastor Contact Number at 331-8121.

PRAYER SHAWLS:

The Needle Arts group has been busy,

and there is a basket of prayer shawls and lap robes in the

Welcome Center. If you know someone who needs a warm

hug of comfort, healing, or encouragement, please consider

giving them a shawl or lap robe that has been made with

prayer. We like to know where these items go, so please put

any info you can on the clip-board provided. Thanks.

ONLINE GIVING:

You can now choose to give to the

church electronically by using a debit or credit card. All you

need to do is visit the Giving Page on the church website and

follow the simple instructions found there.

THE STOREHOUSE: Thanks to all of you who so faithfully contribute non-perishable food donations to our Storehouse Shopping Cart in the Welcome Center. You are truly making a difference to the hungry people in our community. And, to those of you who would like to join this effort, we invite you to add a few non-perishable items to your shopping list and donate on a weekly or monthly basis, as you wish. We’ll accept donations of any non-perishables, but, for the

month of July, our focus will be on collecting cereals, cereal bars, and

protein bars. Your generosity is appreciated!

SCHOOL KITS: On August 9th (this is a date change) we will, as a

congregation, assemble school kits to give to Zuni Elementary and to the Mountainair/Estancia Schools through the United Methodist Churches there. These school kits cost approximately $10 each; stop by the Welcome Center to see a sample. The kicker: we’ve put aside money to buy the supplies, but the money we have will not make many

kits. So, on July 26th, every $10 bill put into the offering plate will be

used for supplies for the school kits. What can you do? Start saving

those Hamiltons ($10 bills) and put them in the offering plate on

July 26th. Of course, you can write checks for any amount you want

to support this project; just be sure to write “school kits” in the memo field of your check. Bless you, St. John’s!

HOSPITALITY VISIONING / TRAINING: On August 16,

St. John’s will be “rolling out” the new Hospitality Ministry Plan. While we are a welcoming church, we’re looking for ways to be even better. Prior to this roll-out, we are scheduling a Hospitality Ministry

Visioning/Training Session on August 2, 12:30 PM-ish (grab a

1st Sunday Lunch and bring it to the meeting) or on Monday,

August 3rd, at 6:00 PM. If you have been, are, or will be a greeter, usher, or Welcome Center volunteer, then we are asking you to attend one of these sessions. Please stop by the Welcome Center and let Wayne know which session you will attend.

HOSPITIALITY MINISTRY: We’ve had some response to the

Hospitality Ministry Insert, but there are still plenty of spots to fill. Check the insert today to see what’s available. Go by the Welcome Center after church and sign up. There are all levels of ministry and we all need to do our part.

Missions Opportunities

As We Enter a Time of Visioning . . .

Please continue to pray for the New Initiatives Team and also this prayer from our prayer walk as we look inward to the St. John’s congregation:

“Lord, we lift up the congregation of St. John’s to you. May we live worthy of your call on our lives. As we respond to that call, fulfill every purpose, every faith-filled act of service by your power. We ask that you strengthen the prayer focus in our church. Make us

into a house of prayer. We desire to be clear-minded and self-controlled so that we can pray first, always, continually, and thankfully. May everyone recognize that this is your desire for all and not just a few. Lord, revive us! Pour out your spirit on us so that we turn to you heart, soul, and strength. Open our minds to understand your Word so that our hearts burn within us. We ask for a vision that sparks a spiritual renewal in our congregation. In Jesus name, Amen.”

Get S.M.A.R.T!

The camp will run from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM at St. John’s. During the day, the children will follow a rotating schedule of sessions in various musical activities, including vocal, instrumental, creative movement, drama, and art. During the week, children will prepare a musical to be presented at the end of camp on Friday.

This year, we are exploring “Wonders in Water” through Biblical stories and song! S.M.A.R.T. Camp Space is still available, but register soon!

Enrollment is limited and camp fills up quickly. Registration forms are available throughout the church, or register online at NewSoundChoirs.org.

following SMART Camp can opt for our Aftercare Option. Care will be available following camp from 1:00 PM—5:00 PM. The cost is $30 per camper. PRAYER QUILT: Dorothy Dossey is the recipient of the prayer

quilt hanging in the prayer board area (across from the church

office). Please stop by and tie a knot on Dorothy’s quilt as you say

a prayer for her.

HOSPITALITY: Hospitality is not a job, but ministry!

MARRIAGE MINUTE: “All men make mistakes, but married

men find out about them sooner.” –Red Skelton

ST. JOHN’S BLOOD DRIVES—AUGUST 2ND & OCTOBER 4TH: Please prayerfully consider giving the gift of life! There are many in need who are counting on those who can give blood. Questions? Call Linn & Mike Furnish (884-6626). You can already sign-up for the August 2nd Blood Drive online at: www.unitedbloodservices.org

CAMPING OPPORTUNITY: Did you ever sit beside the campfire and feel the urge to sing “Home on the Range” in Greek? If so, St. John’s has got just the group for you! The Greek Group probably won’t be camping, but we will be learning “Home on the Range,” “Jesus Loves Me,” and several other hymns and children’s Sunday School songs. You will be fully prepared to sing them in Biblical Greek on your next camping trip. Contact Regina Hunter (294-2877 or [email protected]) or talk to Bronwen Link at Solid Ground.

FREE BOOKS: The Library Committee is reorganizing St. John’s library. As a consequence, many books have been removed from the collection. These books are free to members of our congregation. They are located in Room 231. They are shelved on the east wall of the room, on a cart and on 3 shelves of a cabinet. They are marked “Free Books.” They will remain on these shelves through July 23rd, after which time any remaining books will be discarded. The books on the north wall will remain in the library collection. They are available for checkout, but must be returned to the church library.
