Masters research in Homoeopathy at the Technikon Witwatersrand is
being conducted, over a period of four weeks, concerning ADHD.
Any child diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder between the ages of four and eleven years can qualify for the study. During the period of the study various pen and paper tests will be conducted on your child’s concentration abilities and general behaviour in relation to ADHD.

APPENDIX B:
INFORMATION SHEET
The efficacy of Phosphorus 6CH, a Homoeopathic simplex remedy, in
the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a childhood behavioural disorder, which affects five to ten percent of children, with the onset of symptoms normally occurring before the age of seven. The symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity can affect the child’s social, behavioural and academic functioning. Treatment of ADHD usually involves the use of stimulants, including Ritalin® and psychotherapy sessions.
The Homeopathic practitioner prescribes medicine that is designed to stimulate the body to heal itself, to restore ones health gently and effectively without side effects. Phosphorus is a Homoeopathic remedy that is given to patients presenting with symptoms of nervous system hyper-excitability in ADHD.
The aim of the study is to determine the effect of Phosphorus 6CH on the behaviour
of children with ADHD. The subject will be placed in either the experimental or control groups. The experimental group will receive the medication, while the control group will receive a placebo. Neither the researcher nor the participants will know who will receive the medication. The treatment will be given over a period of two weeks. Assessments will take place before the treatment begins, at week one and then at week two after the treatment has begun and then finally after the third week following no treatment. The assessments used in the clinical trial will include the Barkley and DuPaul Teachers’ Rating Scale (BDTRS) to be completed by the participant’s teacher, an age-appropriate Children’s Checking Task (CCT1 or CCT2) to be completed by the participant and the Parent Symptom Questionnaire (PSQ) to be completed by the parent of the participant.
The use of Phosphorus 6CH may reduce the symptoms of ADHD without causing any
anticipated side effects. The subjects who participate in the study will contribute to medical knowledge, resulting in a greater efficiency in the therapeutic management of ADHD sufferers.
Participation in the study is voluntary and participants are free to refuse to take part and parents are free to withdraw their consent at any time. This will not interfere with the subject’s regular treatments or medical care in any way.

I have been fully informed, by means of a subject information form, of the procedures to be followed, including those that are investigational. I have been given a description of the attendant risks and benefits to be expected and the appropriate alternative procedures. In signing this consent form I agree to this method of treatment, and I understand that I am free to withdraw my consent and discontinue my child’s participation in this study at any time. I also understand that if I have any questions at any time, they will be answered.
