Treasurer’s Report………..9
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
Here we are in May, twixt Easter and Pentecost, with less than ninety days until the Churchwide Gathering, “Arise, shine, your light has come!” There will be over thirty-five from the Synod of the Pacific at the Gathering, and I look forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones!
Easter, the basis of the Christian Church, gives us hope for new life in Christ. Pentecost is the beginning of the Christian Church, when the disciples realized that everyone belonged. In a sense we are always caught twixt Easter, the individual promise of new life in Christ, and Pentecost, symbol for the birth of the church and all that means in our weekly lives of regular attendance and acceptance of responsibility.
Presbyterian Women grew from church women’s involvement in mission 30+ years ago and today includes the Horizons Magazine, the Horizons yearly Bible Study, the Annual Fund giving to Presbytery, Synod and Churchwide levels of PW, and the offering of the Least Coin, the Birthday offering, and the Thank
offering. At Churchwide there will be a banquet dinner and plenary celebrating these 30 years of Presbyterian Women.
Even if we are home the first week of August and not at Churchwide, we can pray for the gathering of women, that new insights will be taken home, that new friendships will be made, and that new connections will lead to more learning.
We continue to be challenged by the issues of the day: the opioid addiction crisis, the “Me Too” awareness and movement, the growing Muslim population in the USA, the reawakening of the ‘race’ issue, and the individual struggle with the question of ‘how am I a racist?’
Each congregational and Synod PW group is invited to continue in the support of the itineration of Global Exchange Synod Rep Mary Lemm Davis. Please send donations to Vicki Hautala, 31865 Little Valley Road, Fort Bragg, CA 95437
For your summer reading I would recommend the books of Celeste Ng and Jodi Picoult. Ng’s book Little Fires Everywhere and Picoult’s book Small Great Things will be discussed at Churchwide.
Remember, we are called to be followers of Christ individually, yet we are called to fellowship with each other and to worship God in the ‘body of Christ’, the church.

May the Spirit of Pentecost fill us all as we sing together:
Spirit of the Living God Fall afresh on me! Spirit of the Living God
Fall afresh on me!
Melt me Mold me Fill me Use me
Spirit of the Living God Fall afresh on me!
Do you know what I want? I want justice—oceans of it. I want fairness—rivers of it.
That’s what I want. That’s all I want. —God
(Amos 5:21-24, The Message)
My church is a small, aging, historical, downtown church in a troubled neighborhood. As we were beginning to plan a Conversation about Constructive Ways to Prevent Gun Violence, a new young member asked me where in the
congregation we have had success getting people to discuss sensitive issues. I thought only a moment, and realized that the only consistent place such questions have been faced has been Presbyterian Women.
These are uncertain, tense times in our nation. We are searching for the truth, for solutions, for direction. We cannot predict what our leadership will do or say next. But I have come to realize that the important question is “How are we going to respond as people of God?” There is a new movement to Reclaim Jesus. There is the Poor People’s Campaign. There are young people demanding sensible laws that protect all citizens. There are marches and walks to highlight the importance of taking care of creation. We need to pay more attention to what we are doing than to what the leaders of our nation are saying and doing, or not doing.
Presbyterian Women have committed themselves to having open eyes. I am thankful for the invitation from Sunnyvale PW to join them for a program about Race, Racism and Privilege: Are You Living in a Woke World? We considered these questions: “What is race? Who is a racist? What is white privilege?”
We all have such a wealth of experience to share with each other and with our churches. It was very rare that Jesus shared with individuals. He came to small and large communities. And this year that is what our Horizons Bible Study has been all about: building community. Even as many of us are finding it more difficult to find time and energy to continue with our studies, circles, and luncheons, our Savior still calls us to care for our neighbor. We do not have the luxury of being tired.
These are the worst of times that we must transform into the best of times. We are forgiven and freed from worry about the future if we but follow the teachings of Jesus.
Presbyterian women are involved in many mission projects during this year and the upcoming year of 2018. Please go to www.presbyterianmission.org and read the stories regarding mission trips and the work involved in these projects.
There is a National Call for Moral Revival. Have you heard of the Poor People’s Campaign? The Poor People’s Campaign is a project in work which is uniting people nationwide to challenge systemic racism, poverty, wage economy, ecological devastation and distorted morality. In another word, let’s bring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s dream to a reality for all that suffer in poverty, discriminated against, and economic
inequality.
Dr. Martin Luther King had a dream that one day all men would be equal. In May of 1967 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in his speech he stated: I think it is necessary for us to realize that we have moved from the era of civil rights to the era of human rights…[W]hen we see that there must be a radical redistribution of economic and political power, then we see that for the last twelve years we have been in a reform movement…That after Selma and the Voting Rights Bill, we moved into a new era, which must be an era of revolution…In short, we have moved into an era where we are called upon to rise certain basic questions about the whole society.
Unfortunately, with the government changes going on now, it seems that discrimination has increased even more among our society, poverty has increased more due to high cost of living, increase in health care costs, and low paying wages and higher education costs.
This is a nationwide effort inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and 50 years after his death this is a new push for a fairer society.
If you would like more information regarding the Poor People’s Campaign, please go to
www.poorpeoplescampaign.org. Please look at the website and see if maybe you may want to see if you can have a speaker come to your event, congregation or PW meeting and talk more about this campaign.
Thank you for your love, compassion and kindness towards others and your passion for the mission work you do.
You can contact me at [email protected] and inform me of any mission projects that your PW committee are involved with now, upcoming or next year. Please do not hesitate to contact me.
Blessings. Constance Rubio
Churchwide Coordinating Team Report
Financial Notes about the Annual Fund
The Presbyterian Women’s CCT met in March in Louisville. Representing the Synod of the Pacific, I signed up for the new Stewardship Committee. The goal just now, as I perceive it, is to clarify for our women in the Synod of the Pacific that what we have known as the Mission Pledge is now called the Annual Fund.
The Annual Fund supports the entire program of Presbyterian Women (PW), not only mission projects.
What is included in the entire program of Presbyterian Women?
• The triennial Global Exchange Program (soon to be every 6 years)
• The triennial Churchwide Gathering (Aug. 2-5 this summer in Louisville)
• Publications (Horizon’s magazine and the annual Bible Study)
• Communications (Quarterly Newsletter, Social Media, Eblasts) And check out www.presbyterianwomen.org
• Salaries of 13 PW staff in Louisville
• Working together to strengthen PC(USA) Racial Ethnic and Women’s Ministries Young Women’s Ministries
Presbyterian Ministry at the UN Office of Public Witness
New Immigrants World Mission Hunger Program
• Special Events
• Honorary Life Membership Program
• Management of Special Offerings (Thank, Birthday, Least Coin)
• The triennial US Mission Experience (soon to be every 6 years alternately
every 3 years with the Global Exchange Program)
We are called to be the hands and feet of Christ through the ministry and mission of PW. You have the opportunity to be a part of an organization that puts women and children first and tries to make a difference wherever we serve.
Let us join together in supporting PW.
Search Committee Report
And the Nominees are….
The Search Committee for PW in the Synod of the Pacific (PWS) is excited to present its nominees for leadership positions on the PWS Coordinating Team. Thank you to these wonderful women for volunteering to serve!

Last fall, Judy Wilkins was recognized as "Pendleton's First Citizen - Woman of the Year" for her many hours of community service over the last 38 years. That is a
gigantic honor. As First Citizen, Judy was in three Pendleton parades. Among other things, Judy orders, displays and sells crafts made by third world artisans. This year sales were excellent and will help many artisans support their families. Any profits go to Presbyterian Women for special mission projects. She also works on Fridays at the local food pantry and arranges for volunteers to assemble food boxes for families in need of food.
